[Bookplate for Ecole Normale Jacques-Cartier and Joseph Denis by John Henry Walker] An insignia tops the bookplate, featuring a radiant cross and open book above a beaver and surrounded by maple leaves. Included is a banner with a motto. Below, the name of the school and a pre-formatted prize text is printed in three fonts. The class, date, name of the recipient and signature of the principal are handwritten in black ink. A border surrounds the text and insignia. The entire plate is printed in black ink. The paper includes a watermark. 22. [Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 23. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 24. [Bookplate for Frederick Claude Vivian Lane and Frederick Starr] Colour woodblock print. In black, blue, nude, red and white ink. Image of birds in water with a fire in a basket at top left and (possibly) a boat top right. 25. [Bookplate for John Ross Robertson] Geometric/art nouveau trim. The traditional Masonic symbol of a rounded square and compass against a rectangle. 26. [Bookplate for John Darby] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a chevron, argent (silver), with the lower part a fillet. Upon the escutcheon are three sheaves of wheat (possibly corn, garbe), two over one . A military medal is at centre chief, with the word "NILE" immediately below. Within the chevron, an anchor each at dexter and sinister, with a naval crown at centre. Above the escutcheon is a crest of a sheaf of wheat (or possibly corn, garbe) and an anchor, upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 27. [Bookplate for Ditton Park] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), divided per pale. The left armorial is charged with three fusils, gules (red). The right armorial has a chief, azure (blue), the charged with three mullets. The lower half is charged with a crowned heart, possibly a preperesentation of a Claddagh. 28. [Bookplate for Stephen Langston] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon parted per pale. On the left, or (gold), charged with a chevron, azure (blue). Above the chevron, are three heraldic roses in chief, and at centre base below the chevron a sea creature. On the right, the quadrant is parted per cross, with quarters two and four, or, vair in pale, azure. Quarters two and three are sable (black), parted per fess, argent (silver). The quarters are charged with three cinque foil, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with the sea creature at centre base at dexter and a rose bush. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 29. [Bookplate for James Hatch] In black ink, an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with two lions passant guardant, with their hind legs couped. Over the lions at the fess point is an inescutcheon parted per pale, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts) and ermines (field sable fur, powdering argent), a chevron sable (black) and argent (silver) with four lozenges ermine and ermines, between three fleur-de-lis argent, two over one. The crest is a lion cabossed on a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 30. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 31. [Bookplate for John Somers by James Ross] This heraldric bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Baron coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664a, which is presumably owned by the same individual after his rise to title. 32. [Bookplate for John Somers] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Earl coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664b, which is presumably owned by the same individual, but before his ascendancy to title. 33. [Bookplate for Spencer Walpole] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), with a fess sable (black), charged with three cross crosslets, or. Top and bottom sections are charged with a chevron, sable. Entire shield is placed within a circle, with bookplate owner's name circling at the border. 34. [Bookplate for R. J. A. Boreman] In black ink. This bookplate displays a bespectacled man, presumably the originator, reading a book by candle-light. With no tonal variation, he is set-off against a black background, framed with a thin, asymmetrical, ornate border. Above the profile-portrait is the originator's name, and below, his Latin motto and a separate component in which a book number has been stamped in red. 35. [Bookplate for Kennedy McIlwraith] Black ink on white paper. The image depicts the main entrance to University College at the University of Toronto. 36. [Bookplate for Macdonald College] Bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A small coat of arms for Macdonald College appears above, with pre-printed lines containing a hand-written call number and date listed below in black ink. The word 'discarded' is stamped across the middle in blue ink. 37. [Bookplate for George H. Fensom by Walter Lohse] Black and yellow ink on thick, cream coloured paper. This bookplate features a well-lit, paned window framing a rearing Pegasus. Plants and vines surround the window. 38. [Bookplate for Walter Stevens Herrington] This bookplate's design features a distinct rectangular frame, with flora, particularly pine needles, pine cones and maple leaves, in the upper portion, an hour glass and scales in the lower corners and a book shelf along the bottom border. Within this decorated frame, an open book displays the originator's name, and below, many literary characters appear, including a mother and child, a crowned princess or queen and a winged fairy. 39. [Bookplate for George H. Fensom by Thoreau MacDonald] In black ink. Landscape featuring a cabin overlooking a lake. 40.
