[Bookplate for Catholic Commercial Academy of Montreal, Wm Price, and U. E. Archambault by Geo. E. Desbarats] Black ink on white paper. The border of the bookplate comprises three layers: the outermost is an abstract floral motif on the four corners ; secondly is a geometric pattern of triangles ; the innermost layer is a plain line. Curlicues surround the words “Catholic” and “of Montreal.” The bookplate is a pre-printed form with space for the prize name, winner, year and date to be filled out. 22. [Bookplate for Cavalry Church] Printed in black ink, an ornate border surrounds the text. The seal in the center of the bookplate displays an image of the Calvary Church. 23. [Bookplate for Charles M. Harris] This bookplate's monochromatic design created in peacock blue ink depicts the interior of an ornately decorated library. The scene features a man on a ladder perusing book titles. The man seems unable to select only one book. He appears to have his hands full, and yet he continues to scan shelved titles for other desirable volumes. He holds one book in his hand, one slipped under his elbow and another clenched between his knees. The image on this bookplate is a commercially available, mass-produced design. 24. [Bookplate for Charles Perrin Smith] This bookplate consists of a very detailed coat of arms, which is divided per pale. The first half at dexter has fifteen quarterings, which are as follows: azure (blue) with a chevron argent (silver), charged with a crescent, between three cocks ; sable (black) charged with three griffin's heads erased ; sable and argent (silver) divided per fess with a lion rampant ; argent charged with a lion passant, between three fleur de lis, two over one ; gules and argent, divided quarterly, charged with four lions passant ; or (gold) charged with a lion gules rampant ; ermine (fur) charged with a lion sable rampant ; azure with a chevron argent, between three cocks ; gules with two lions passant, one above the other ; ermines and sable, divided per bend sinister, charged with a lion sable rampant ; argent, a bordure engrailed or charged with three Griffin's heads, erased gules ; argent and gules, divided per quarterly, quarters one and four argent, charged with three boars' heads and quarters two and th. 25. [Bookplate for Charles Theodore Hart] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features the head of a stag in profile on a crest-wreath. The shield is pointed at the top left, top right, and bottom corners. The bottom of the shield curves to a central point. The shield is argent with a sable chevron charged with two stars on the top left and top right sides. The stars are white with black shading and a black circle in the center. Below the chevron the shield is charged with a springing stag. Below the shield the motto is printed on a ribbon in capitalized, serif font. Underneath the motto is the bookplate owner’s name in curling, italicized font. 26. [Bookplate for Crease Clinic of Psychological Medicine] Black ink on white paper. British Columbia coat of arms at top. Text below. Other text in blue rubber stamp ink. 27. [Bookplate for D. Girouard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features right arm bent at elbow holding the top half of a spear on crest-wreath. Shield has sable and argent stripes, charged with three two-pointed flags two speckled sable on argent flags over one argent flag facing left. The top two flags are speckled, sable on argent, and the bottom flag is argent. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capital letters on ribbon with curling ends. Name typewritten in cursive sentence font. 28. [Bookplate for Dalhousie University Library] Black ink on white paper. Shield is supported by two dragons rampant. On the shield is an eagle displayed. Above the crown the crest is a unicorn couped in profile. Motto and other text below. 29. [Bookplate for David Bond and Elizabeth Bond] Bookplate design features an eagle in flight in foreground, with compass in background. Bookplate owner names at base. 30. [Bookplate for David Bond] Bookplate design features a woodland scene, of a brook and foliage at foreground and trees at back. Bookplate text contained within banner at top. 31. [Bookplate for David Russell Jack] Black ink on cream paper with shiny surface. The crest features an armoured arm clutching a sword extending from a crest-wreath. Below is an esquires helm, from which extends mantling on either side. The mantling is light on top and darkens to black at the bottom. The shield is has a chevron with thin, horizontal, black lines. Above the chevron, the shield is charged with two crescent moons with the points facing upwards. Below the chevron, the shield is charged with the same arm from the crest, in this case tilted 90 degrees so that the arm is horizontal. While the crest arm holds a straight sword, the shield arm is holding a sword with a curved blade. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, block serif font on a curling ribbon. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in larger, black, sentence case cursive font. A second line features the date printed in smaller, thin, stylized black font. 32. [Bookplate for David Stewart Erskine] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered per cross, and contains an inescutcheon. The first quarter, azure (blue), contains three garbe, two over one. The second quarter is itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, azure with an or (gold) riband and six cross crosslets fitchy sable (black) ; the second and third quarters are argent (silver), with a pale, sable. The third quarter of the escutcheon is also itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, or, with a fess in checky (alternate squares of metal and fur), argent and azure ; the second and third quarters are azure, containing three garbe, two over one. The fourth quarter, argent, with six bars, gemelles (doubles), contains a lion rampant, sable and proper. The inescutcheon, gules (red) contains an eagle, displayed and proper, and a ray of sun issuing out of the dexter corner. Atop the escutcheon is the coronet of an earl, topped by a grated helmet (peer), dexter. Upon the helmet is a curved crest wreath and a dexter cubit arm holding a club. From either side of the crest flows elaborate mantling. The escutcheon is accompanied by two supporters. The dexter supporter is an ostrich, while the sinister supporter is a griffin. Below the escutcheon and the supporters is a banner containing the English motto. 33. [Bookplate for Drysdale’s Lending Library by W. Drysdale & Co.] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate border surrounds text printed in multiple fonts. The book number is left blank. 34. [Bookplate for E. Kimber and L. Kimber] In black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three martlets, and containing a chief, sable (black), with three mullets, argent. A wreath crest with a tearful ox couped affronté. Banner located below escutcheon contains Latin motto. 35. [Bookplate for E. W. Neville by Marjorie Sankey] In black ink on yellow/brown paper. The elaborate façade of a building is held up by a large tree with many roots. The owner’s name is featured in the gate entrance. The thick paper features chain and laid lines. 36. [Bookplate for Ecole Normale Jacques-Cartier and Joseph Denis by John Henry Walker] An insignia tops the bookplate, featuring a radiant cross and open book above a beaver and surrounded by maple leaves. Included is a banner with a motto. Below, the name of the school and a pre-formatted prize text is printed in three fonts. The class, date, name of the recipient and signature of the principal are handwritten in black ink. A border surrounds the text and insignia. The entire plate is printed in black ink. The paper includes a watermark. 37. [Bookplate for Edmund Murton Walker by Thoreau MacDonald] In black ink on white paper, a dragonfly is flying past some large rocks next to a body of water, likely a river. In the background is a forest of tall evergreen trees. 38. [Bookplate for Edmund Smith Hopkins by E. Soucher] This bookplate features a pictorial design with flowers, books, and other miscellaneous items along with a quote from John Wilson, a Scottish author. 39. [Bookplate for Edward Andrew Donaldson] In black ink. An escutcheon divided quarterly ; first and fourth quadrants, or (gold), a double-headed bird displayed, sable (black), above a lymphad showing three dexter flags, gules (red) ; second and third quadrants, gules, fess checky argent (silver) and gules, with two arrows argent. Also, two inescutcheons, or, with a hand gules. One inescutcheon is located in the centre of the escutcheon and the other in the top corner of the dexter chief. A escutcheon has a bordure, indented and azure (blue), with seven belt buckels, one at each corner of the escutcheon. The crest is a closed dexter helm, argent, with mantling. Atop the helm is a bare cubit arm grasping a dagger. There is a lance extending from the top dexter corner of the escutcheon, displaying a banner. The banner encirles a Latin cross and an anchor, and contains the Latin motto. Also, there is a triangle which contains a three-masted ship in the top left hand corner. A border frames the coat of arms and contains a saying in four languages. 40. [Bookplate for Ellen A. Hoffman by Walter J. Phillips] This wood-engraved bookplate's design is based from on a view near Lake Louise in Banff, Alberta. It features a running stream, grass, and trees. Bookplate image is surrounded by a stylized border, which features the grass of parnassus, which is also featured in the foreground of the scene.
