[Bookplate for Edward Steane] This simple textual bookplate contains the originator's name in black ink, and also includes the location. Slight discolouration of text on surname. 22. [Bookplate for Vincent Stuckey] In black in, this bookplate consists of and escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter half is divided per bend sinister, or (gold), azure (blue) and dove-tailed, and charged with a lion, rampant and ermine with a tail queue fourché. At the dexter chief of the half is an azure canton charged with a mascle, or. The sinister half of the escutcheon is identical to the dexter, except that at it also contains a crescent at middle chief. The escutcheon is crested by a straight crest wreath and a demi-lion with tail queue fourché, ermine and charged with a mascle, azure. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 23. [Bookplate for Philip Southcote] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an elaborately bordered escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a chevron, argent, three ducks, two over one and dexter, and an annulet at the precise middle chief. The annulet symbolizes the fifth son. The escutcheon is crested by a dexter closed helmet. Atop the helmet is a curved wreath and another duck, dexter. From either side of the crest flows elaborate mantling. 24. [Bookplate for George Murray Humphry] Bookplate design consists of text with lined border surrounding. 25. [Bookplate for Spencer Walpole] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), with a fess sable (black), charged with three cross crosslets, or. Top and bottom sections are charged with a chevron, sable. Entire shield is placed within a circle, with bookplate owner's name circling at the border. 26. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 27. [Bookplate for Hugh Macdonald Sinclair] Appearing at the top is a motto AD ASTRA VIRTUS. Star crest on a wreath sits on top of a gentleman's vizored helm with mantling. Bordure of shield has stars from the base to the dexter side and from the chief to the sinister side. Quarterly field has a lion rampant (meaning: masculinity, leadership, royalty, justice and strength) near the sinister chief and near the dexter base, and a unknown symbol on the dexter chief, and a ship (meaning: voyage, salvation, and seafaring) on the sinister base. Appearing at the bottom of the bookplate is another motto J'AIME LE MEILLEUR. 28. [Bookplate for British Association for the Advancement of Science] Red and black ink on white paper. Coat of arms at top. Quartered shield shows English rose, Scottish thistle, Irish clover and Canadian beaver. Text in a bordered circle around shield. Cursive text below. Contributors include British Association. 29. [Bookplate for John George Mortlock by Charles William Sherborn] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon and crest framed by an elaborate circular bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a fret, azure (blue), and contain a chief, azure, charged with three fleur-de-lis, argent ; the second and third quadrants, sable (black), are charged with three annulets, argent, two over one, and contain a chevron, argent and engrailed. The escutcheon is crested by a closed dexter helmet resting upon the second quadrant, topped by a wreath and a lion sejant, with dexter paw elevated and resting upon a fleur-de-lis, argent. From either side of the helmet flows mantling and a banner which contains the Latin motto. The bordure also contains text. 30. [Bookplate for John Orde] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. At dexter, the escutcheon is sable (black), charged with three fish, two over one, huariant. Above the fish is an escutcheon, argent (silver), with the hand of Ulster ; a dexter hand, gules (red), indicating knight status. At sinister, the escutcheon is or (gold), with a flasque gules. The flasque is charged with wild cat heads, one over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a stag's head erased. The stag's neck is also charged with a band, gules and engrailed. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 31. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 32. [Bookplate for Richard Whitmore Norman] This simple heraldic bookplate consists of a straight wreath charged with a stag's head, erased. Above the charged wreath is a banner, with Latin motto within. 33. [Bookplate for E. Bibl. Radcl.] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, in the shape of a Victorian shield, argent (silver), and a bend engrailed, sable. Surrounding the escutcheon is a circular border, with embellishments within. Below the circular border is bookplate text. 34. [Bookplate by W. Bowles and J.W. Leigh] This bookplate is rendered in a circular motif, with three escutcheons pivoting the centre. The first crest is gules (red), charged with three ducal coronet, positioned two over one, with a roundlet or (gold) at centre. The second crest has a chevronelly of eleven or and azure (blue). The third crest is gules, charged with three inverted wildcat heads on fleur-de-lis, two over one. The entire assemblage is contained within a circular pattern, with Latin name in the border. The original artist of the crest is J.W. Leigh, indicated by "Inv." at the base of the design. 35. [Bookplate for John Somers by James Ross] This heraldric bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Baron coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664a, which is presumably owned by the same individual after his rise to title. 36. [Bookplate for John Somers] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Earl coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664b, which is presumably owned by the same individual, but before his ascendancy to title. 37. [Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 38. [Bookplate for Edward Brown Lees and Dorothy Livesey Lees] Bookplate design is circular, with an escutcheon divided per pale. Primary charges are a lion rampant and falcons. Above the shield is an esquire helmet and a straight wreath charged with another falcon. Circular banner surrounding escutcheon contains bookplate owner's names. 39. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 40. [Bookplate for Vincent Massey and Alice Massey by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on white paper. This coat of arms is described in great detail by the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada (RHSC), in their 'Members' Roll of Arms,' under the entry for the Rt. Hon. Charles Vincent Massey. They write: 'The arms argent [silver], on a chevron sable [black] between three lozenges of the last, each charged with a fleur de lis of the first, three stags' heads erased or [gold] ; on a canton azure [blue], a representation of the crest of Canada as an honourable augmentation. The crest out of an antique crown or, a bull's head sable, armed gold, charged on the neck with a lozenge argent, thereon a fleur de lis also sable.'
