[Bookplate for L’Institut Canadien] Printed in black ink, a thick decorative border surrounds the text. 22. [Bookplate for Nicholas Garry] Printed in black ink on off-white paper. In the centre is a family shield, decorated with with a chevron pattern in solid black and white ground with a spotted pattern. A ‘V’ shape in the centre of the shield intercepts and counterchanges the chevron colours. Above this is an extended arm in armor holding a circular disc that repeats the pattern on the shield. 23. [Bookplate by James Gourlay Gray] Metallic brown black ink on cream paper. Border of two thin black lines with floral and leafy decorative features on the left and right sides. Latin script printed at the top of the bookplate in capitalized font with curling serif. An inner border surrounds two images. The top image has a black background with four white shining stars in the background. In the centre is a half circle strip with curled sends over marbled colouring, all of which surrounds sheet music. On top of the sheet music is a small harp-like instrument with horns protruding from it. At the top of the heart is a candle holder with smoke swirling from the top. On the outer left-hand side of the half-circle decoration is a reclining woman styled like a classical status in a draping dress. She is holding a pan flute in her right hand. On the right hand side, another similarly styled woman is reclining and holding a paint easel with several brushes in her left hand. Both women are barefooted. The bottom image has a thick marbled border. Within the border is a curlicue decoration, in the centre of which is an image of a work desk. There is a photograph hanging on the wall behind the desk. The desk itself is quite cluttered and features many photographs, papers, and books. The walls have decorative wall paper and there are various wall hangings. Below that section are two horizontal strips of different decorations. The top stripe has a dark snake like curving pattern, the borders of which are decorated with stylized, pointed lines. Thin white stripes are at the top and bottom of the horizontal strip. A row of small white dots separates this pattern from the next strip, which is a series of floral leaves curling in a line to meet at the centre. Below that, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized serif font with extra stylizing on the “A”s. 24. [Bookplate for William Greening and Cornelia Greening by A. N. Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Elaborately decorated frame surrounds three round images, two small ones atop a larger, oval one. The border has a shelf-like appearance with the top featuring a series of curling, heart-shaped decorations with a large, spiraling curlicue extending to the left and right. The very centre of the top element features a leaf-like decoration pointing upwards. The top half of the sides of the border features symmetrical leafy curlicue decorations that extend downwards with a pseudo-fleurs-de-lis to a line of elaborate floral decorations. The large oval image extends to the sides of the borders and below the oval are decorations on both the left and right sides. The left side features a tennis racket entwined in leafy decoration. The right side contains golf clubs in the same leafy decoration. Leafy decoration also surround the two small images inside the border, which are connected by two wrapping ribbons in the centre. The image on the left features an explorer holding a walking stick and wearing a hat looking out onto a nature landscape. The landscape includes water and a mountain topped with clouds. The image on the right contains a road curving to the right. The right side of the road features foliage, including several palm trees. The large, central image shows a house with some of its garden in the foreground. The forefront of the image is a simple lawn, followed by several small trees on the left with plants in barrels, a table, and several chairs on the right. Between the trees and chairs is a path leading further into the garden and towards the house. The house is quite large and has at least two stories and a sheltered porch. Towards the other end of the house and garden are taller trees. Below the images is a rectangular box with a border. The border consists of two thin white lines with a darker centre between them. The centre of the rectangle contains text written in capitalized serif font in varying sizes. Below the rectangle, the artist’s name and date of creation is written in small, sentence-case serif font. Handwritten note in pencil on the back. 25. [Bookplate for A. C. Jones by Clare Victor Dwiggins] Black ink on cream paper. The border of the bookplate consists of intertwined thorny and leafy vines with thicker leaves in the corners. The top left and right corners also feature rose-like flowers. Near the top of the border, vines extend from the left and right sides towards the center of the bookplate design. Capitalized, black, whimsical font is at the top of the bookplate. Dots surround some of the words and some letters are looping or intertwined. In the center of the bookplate, a tall, thin, beautiful woman in a whimsical fluted dress stands atop a closed book. The woman’s hair is done up and decorated with flowers. Flowers also decorate the top of the dress, the bottom of which features a spiral pattern. The dress is cinched at the waist with a belt and similarly cinched around the thighs with a large ribbon tied in a bow. The bottom of the dress extends outwards and there is a lacey layer underneath. The woman is wearing slip-on high heels with bows on the front. Next to the large book the woman is standing on are two books, one small one in front of the book sitting on its side. The other book is standing upright and is behind the large book. The woman is bending towards a small, naked cherub with a single curl atop its head and feathery wings. The cherub is standing in front of a book open and standing on its pages with the spine up. The cherub is also holding an open book and looking smilingly up at the woman. Behind the woman, the bookplate creator’s name is printed in curling, capitalized, black font. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is printed in black, gothic, sentence case font. 26. [Bookplate for Harry E. Jones] Shiny texturized black ink is raised off the white paper. An elaborate border surrounds the central image. The border has two thin black lines on the outside and then has a series of repeating leafy floral shapes. The floral design is quite pointed and recurs in square sections all around the border. At each corner the design points out towards the corner. The inside of the border is surrounded by a thick black line. At the top of the border, an unfurled banner that is wider than the border sites atop of it. Text is printed in capitalized, block serif font. Below the ribbon, within the borders, is a picture of two monks looking at a large book with text and illustrations. One monk is standing in shadow, his back illuminated by the sunlight streaming in from a window outside the frame on the right side of the bookplate. At the forefront is a seated monk, also with his back to the sun, who is holding the book open while the other monk points at a section. The monk is sitting in a wooden chair with small cutout designs on the back. The table is also wooden and is covered with other books and a feather quill in an inkwell. In front of the desk, a large book with a decorative cover rests against the table leg. To the left of the book is a plain vase. At the base of the image, atop the lower portion of the border, is another ribbon featuring text printed in black, sentence case, serif font. 27. [Bookplate for Hopital Général d’Ottawa] Black ink on cream paper. The bookplate features a border consisting of thick, black wavy lines with arrows on the ends of each line pointing towards the corner. Each corner has three diamonds shaped in a triangle. Inside the border, there is a circular image with a border of two interwoven black wavy lines. Inside that border is capitalized text printed in bold, black, sans serif front. In the center of the circle is a cross coming out of the ground wrapped in vines. Above and below the cross are two ribbons with mottos printed in capitalized, black, sans serif front. At the bottom of the bookplate, outside of the circular design, but inside the first border, is text printed in capitalized, black, serif font. 28. [Bookplate for University of British Columbia and Alice Ravenhill] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate features a border consisting of several black lines with X designs in the corners. There is the University of British Columbia crest. The chief has a dark background and features an open book with its straps lying out. The university motto is printed in stylized black font on the book’s open pages. The bottom section of the map was alternating black and white lines. From the bottom of the shield is part of a sun with its rays extending upwards. The sun is charged with black dots. To the right of the shield is stylized gothic text in large, black font. Below it is text printed in smaller, cursive, black font.
