[Bookplate for J. Harry Smith by William Walker Alexander] Printed in brown ink on cream paper, the bookplate shows a man in the dress of a 19th-century agricultural laborer against a background of clouds and a landscape of fields, trees, and three buildings (possibly a house, a barn, and an out building). The man holds a basket in his left hand and sows seeds with his right hand. In the left foreground, a lamb frolics next to an open book. The right page of the book reads 'LAMB'S / TALES.' Underneath the open book appears a manuscript upon which rests an inkwell and a quill pen. The date '1942' is written in the bottom left corner of the manuscript. To the right of the book appears a mailbox with 'R. R. / 4' written on the door. On the side of the mailbox appear the words 'Knoll Farm / J. HARRY SMITH.' Below and to the right of mailbox appears an inverted triangle with the initials 'W W' at the base of the triangle and the initial 'A' at the top of the triangle. 2. [Bookplate for Robie Lewis Reid] The bookplate has below a banner with a quote from the Canterbury Tales an image of a writing desk backed by a number of books both lined up vertically, aslant and open on the desk. A banner crosses the upper portion of the image that states "EX LIBRIS", between these two words is a round shield made by a belt on which is written "PRO VIRTUTE". Within this shield is the image of a hand holding an open book on top of a braided wreath. Below the writing desk is a rectangular plate with the name "Robie Lewis Reid". 3. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 4. [Bookplate for Boys and Girls Library of the National Council of Jewish Women by G. H.] A large book with a man peeking out of its splayed pages hovers above a collection of images from children’s literature: ships, trains, flamingo, cat, knight on horseback,and other human figures. The symbol of the National Council of Jewish Women sits at the center of the book plate with the date of the organization's foundation. 5. [Bookplate for Dorothy C. Heney by Clifford H. Brown] Black ink on buff paper. The image depicts a young girl holding hands with a book, pushing open the gates of Fairy Land, toward a castle in the background.
