[Bookplate for Ecole Normale Jacques-Cartier and Joseph Denis by John Henry Walker] An insignia tops the bookplate, featuring a radiant cross and open book above a beaver and surrounded by maple leaves. Included is a banner with a motto. Below, the name of the school and a pre-formatted prize text is printed in three fonts. The class, date, name of the recipient and signature of the principal are handwritten in black ink. A border surrounds the text and insignia. The entire plate is printed in black ink. The paper includes a watermark. 22. [Bookplate for Hugh Macdonald Sinclair] Appearing at the top is a motto AD ASTRA VIRTUS. Star crest on a wreath sits on top of a gentleman's vizored helm with mantling. Bordure of shield has stars from the base to the dexter side and from the chief to the sinister side. Quarterly field has a lion rampant (meaning: masculinity, leadership, royalty, justice and strength) near the sinister chief and near the dexter base, and a unknown symbol on the dexter chief, and a ship (meaning: voyage, salvation, and seafaring) on the sinister base. Appearing at the bottom of the bookplate is another motto J'AIME LE MEILLEUR. 23. [Bookplate for S. Yates Johnstone] Armorial bookplate. Silver shield with a dark red saltier ; in the top of the shield are three gold cushions on a red background. Surrounding the top of the shield is an elaborate mantling above which is a crest with a wreathe and a winged spur. Below the shield is the Latin mottoe "Nunquam non paratus" (never uprepared). 24. [Bookplate for Sir Charles Cockerell] Armorial bookplate. The shield is divided in half to show the arms of both the husband and wife. The left shield, representing the husband, is divided into six sections two of which portray roosters, between which is a face surrounded by leaves. Above the top rooster is a crescent signifying the second son. The middle section is argent (silver or white) with two chevrons. The top chevron is adorned with three flowers and at the top and bottom of the chevron are three eagle heads ; the bottom chevron is adorned with three roundlets and above and below the chevron are three flowers or leaves. Between the chevrons and at the centre of the six sections is a small shield with a left hand facing palm-out. The top right corner shows two lion heads and a bend adorned with three fleur-de-lis. On the bottom left corner is a lion. The second shield shows two lions passant guardant on a black background with an or border. Above the shield is a wreathed helm facing forward with a raised visor therein signifying barony or knighthood. Above the helm is a crescent and crowned tiger head. On both sides of the shield are angelic supporters each carrying a flag staff (adorned with the sun and crescent moon) as well as palm/laurel fronds (on which birds are perched). The figures are adorned in robes decorated with fleur-de-lis and their chests are imprinted with crosses. 25. [Bookplate for James Fielding Sweeny] At the top center of the bookplate is a mitre with a crosier on the left side and a banner on the right side. Below that is a crest with argent (silver) background, divided by per pale ; on the sinister side, a mitre and key are crossed, with a coronet, two books, and a dove, holding an olive branch. On the dexter side, two battle axes crossed above two boars, rampant, counterpassant. Beneath that is another crest, divided per pale. The sinister side has an argent background and two battle axes, crossed, above two boars, rampant, counterpassant. On the dexter side, is a lion, rampant. At the base of the bookplate is an alley of columns. 26. [Bookplate for Frederic William Howay] At the top is a sea otter resting on the sand with a mountainous coast in the background. Below that within a shield-shaped frame is a picture of a sailing vessel with the title "SEA OTTER" on the stern. The shield is surrounded by various sea shells, with a banner displaying the bookplate text. 27. [Bookplate for R. W. Urwin by Diocese of Durham] At the top of this bookplate, above the text, is the arms of the bishopric of Durham. The escutcheon is azure (blue), and contains an or (gold) cross patonce. Each quadrant of the cross contains a lion rampant. On top of the shield is a bishop's mitre. As the Bishops of Durham were formerly princes of the Palatinate of Durham, this mitre has the unique distinction of also including a ducal coronet which provides for greater heraldic distinction. The bookplate is in letterpress with handwritten inserts. 28. [Bookplate for Paul Hahn by J. M.] Black and blue ink on cream paper. The rectangular border consists of three black lines of decreasing thickness towards the center. In the top right corner is a small butterfly with outspread wings with some decoration. Below the butterfly is text in stylized, capitalized, black serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed below in slightly different stylized font in a larger size. Underneath the owner’s name is a larger butterfly with more elaborate outstretched wings. The text forms a single column in the left-hand side of the bookplate. To the right of the text is a bookshelf that appears to extend down to the bottom of the bookplate. Books are stacked in various ways on the shelf, spines facing out. In front of the bookshelf is a cello. The base of the cello sits in the bottom center of the bookplate and the neck extends up towards the top right-hand corner. At the top of the cello sits a butterfly, less elaborate than the others, that has been coloured in with blue ink. To the right of the cello is a tall object extending up along the bookshelf. A section of papers, potentially sheet music, in a folder in the bottom right corner. In the bottom left corner, the bookplate creator’s initials are printed in capitalized, black, serif font surrounded by a thin black border. 29. [Bookplate for Alton Goldbloom] Black and gold ink on cream paper. Art deco stylized capitalized font printed a top an image of a baby emerging from the torso up out of a gold, three-petal flower. Black stripes of alternating thick and thin width appear behind the baby. The vertical stem of the flower has a gold centre and two leaves, one on each side of the stem, that are half black and half gold. The stem expands in width at the base and capitalized font is written in the non-printed space at the black base. Black ink capitalized font is written below. 30. [Bookplate for J. H. Gill] Black ink on brown paper. Decorated arch at top is inscribed with school motto. Within the arch we see the gable and roof of the school. Below this is text enclosed by decorated border. Lamb in a circle at very bottom. 31. [Bookplate for William Ralph Howard by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream colored paper. The image depicts a tall ship at sea with all sails unfurled, in a swell of water, with a large cumulous cloud in the background. The image is framed by a length of rope that circles the entire bookplate. Below, a heraldic device is displayed in a circular frame. A broken ionic order column is in the center, with the top half of the column resting on the right side of the base and an oval shield with a flower on it leaning on the left side of the base. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is presented in a solid-colored shield. The rope frame meets at both sides of the shield: on the left, the rope holds an anchor and on the right it holds a ship lantern. 32. [Bookplate for David Russell Jack] Black ink on cream paper with shiny surface. The crest features an armoured arm clutching a sword extending from a crest-wreath. Below is an esquires helm, from which extends mantling on either side. The mantling is light on top and darkens to black at the bottom. The shield is has a chevron with thin, horizontal, black lines. Above the chevron, the shield is charged with two crescent moons with the points facing upwards. Below the chevron, the shield is charged with the same arm from the crest, in this case tilted 90 degrees so that the arm is horizontal. While the crest arm holds a straight sword, the shield arm is holding a sword with a curved blade. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, block serif font on a curling ribbon. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in larger, black, sentence case cursive font. A second line features the date printed in smaller, thin, stylized black font. 33. [Bookplate by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper, depicting a satyr playing reed pipes in a field with some flowers, surrounded by wildlife (moose, rabbit, squirrel, beaver, birds). There is a forest and water nearby, and signs of human life (tent, canoe). Pictured within a circular frame, with ribbon and text, and a crow standing on a branch at the very top looking down. 34. [Bookplate for Ruth Delia Lyman] Black ink on cream paper. A demi-bull sites atop a crest-wreath. The bull has its top legs up and a curling tail, as well as two horns. The motto is printed below the crest-wreath on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. Below this image, two lines of text is printed in large, capitalized, black, sans serif font. 35. [Bookplate] Black ink on cream paper. A printed cloth border with four-petal flowers in the upper-right and upper-left corners houses the title, location, and loan policies of the library. The cloth border does not extend to the top perimeter, and instead a single horizontal line runs between the two four-petal flowers. Directly above this horizontal line is a number written in blue ink. Between the city and the loan policy is a vertical dividing line with a curlicue in the centre. Beneath the loan policy is a number space in which a number has been entered in black ink with a line crossing it out in blue ink. 36. [Bookplate for Elora Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on cream paper. A stylized border surrounds text in multiple fonts, including a Gothic title. A number is handwritten at the top of the plate in pencil. 37. [Bookplate for Ecole Modele Jacques-Cartier by John Henry Walker] Black ink on cream paper. An insignia tops the bookplate, featuring a radiant cross and open book above a beaver and surrounded by maple leaves. Included is a banner with a motto. An ornate scrolled border surrounds the text and insignia. The printer is listed at the bottom. 38. [Bookplate for Joint Board of Theological Colleges] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate banned frame with leaf sprigs houses the text. At the bottom of the frame, the letters MTD are incorporated amid a sprig. The outside of the frame is decorated with a repeating leaf pattern. The corners of the frame are four shields. The top left tablet shield is dotted (gold) and charged with an undecipherable center object. An open book sits atop the shield. The top right tablet shield is horizontally lined (azure) and charged with a downward facing bird (dove) at the chief and an open book at the base. A tree sits atop the shield. The bottom left Norman pointed shield is horizontally lined (azure) with a cross (argent). It is charged with an open book with writing over the center of the cross. A coronet sits atop the shield. The bottom right spade shield is blank (argent) and is charged with an anchor. A mitre sits atop the shield. 39. [Bookplate for Jos-N. Chaussé M.D.] Black ink on cream paper. An oval border with decoration at the top and bottom surrounds an illustration of a naked female figure whose arms are turning into tree branches, referencing Daphne of Greek mythology. The women’s tree branch arms extend beyond the oval border. She is looking to her left with a laurel crown on other head tied with ribbons while her long black hair flows past her right shoulder. A long, curling ribbon wraps around her back upper body, across her torso, and then back around her legs. Text is printed on the ribbon in bold, black, capitalized, serif font. The woman stands with her ankles crossed and is wearing strappy open-toe flat shoes. She stands in front of an open book. In the top left corner of the left page are initials printed in capitalized, stylized, block font. The woman also stands atop of a closed book, with its pages facing the viewer. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate, text is printed in various stylized black fonts. 40. [Bookplate for Evans Bros.] Black ink on cream paper. At the top of the bookplate sits the title and address of the library. Beneath this is a header for the library rules, written in Germanic font. Beneath this section sits a horizontal dividing line, followed by the five individual rules and policies. This section is divided into two columns. On the left are headers for each type of rule or policy, and on the right sits the body of each.
