[Bookplate for Henri Rainville] This bookplate depicts a large, bespectacled rat, dressed in what appears to be eighteenth-century attire and displaying a prominent tail and whiskers. Facing away from the viewer, the rat is seated at a table in front of a window, through which the leaves of a tree can be seen. The rodent holds a quill pen and is poised to continue writing in a book that is propped open on the table with a second, closed volume. 62. [Bookplate for Henry Young and Alice Young by Joseph Winfred Spenceley] In black ink on beige paper. In the centre, standing on the name plate, is the image of knight crusader, holding with outstretched arms a broad ribbon inscribed with the word "Credo." His Norman pointed shield hangs in front of his sword from a strap at his left hip ; the charges, untinctured, are: barry of five, in canton a leopard contournd. At either side of him rises a large acanthus-like scroll surmounted by a leopard's head ; behind him hangs an arras curtain, draped and knotted at the top. Across the base ripples a ribbon, inscribed "Ex libris Henry and Alice Young." The whole is enclosed in a narrow, formal frame. 63. [Bookplate for Hugel] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a lion rampant holding a flower with three petals between its paws. The lion stands atop a crown with elaborate, feathery wings extending upwards to the left and right. The crown is round and flat and decorated with three diamonds across the front. The crown sits on the head of a baronet and knight helm. Elaborate, curling mantling extends to the left and right and down the bookplate, becoming blacker towards the ends. The shield is divided per cross. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with a lion rampant. The lion in the top left faces to the right, whereas the lion in the bottom right faces to the left. Like the lion in the crest, these lions hold a flower with three petals in their paws. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are argent with sable dots. They are each charged with three black diamonds, two over one. The diamonds have black shading on the right-hand sides. Below the shield, a curling ribbon with non-straight edges has the motto printed in black, capitalized, serif font. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate, black, large, sentence case, Gothic font with extensive curling decorations surrounding the text. 64. [Bookplate for I. L. Rankin by H. W. P.] In black ink on white paper, a ship is pictured at sea with a flying bird to its left. There is a sea monster on either side of the signature at the bottom. Very faint pink marks are present throughout the plate, and there's a smudge mark (likely ink) in the bottom left corner. 65. [Bookplate for J. Harry Smith by William Walker Alexander] Printed in brown ink on cream paper, the bookplate shows a man in the dress of a 19th-century agricultural laborer against a background of clouds and a landscape of fields, trees, and three buildings (possibly a house, a barn, and an out building). The man holds a basket in his left hand and sows seeds with his right hand. In the left foreground, a lamb frolics next to an open book. The right page of the book reads 'LAMB'S / TALES.' Underneath the open book appears a manuscript upon which rests an inkwell and a quill pen. The date '1942' is written in the bottom left corner of the manuscript. To the right of the book appears a mailbox with 'R. R. / 4' written on the door. On the side of the mailbox appear the words 'Knoll Farm / J. HARRY SMITH.' Below and to the right of mailbox appears an inverted triangle with the initials 'W W' at the base of the triangle and the initial 'A' at the top of the triangle. 66. [Bookplate for J. Hunt Stanford] An armorial bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A buck couped argent (silver) with antlers or (gold) gorged gules (red) with a crest wreath, argent and azure (silver and blue), sits on a visored helm facing dextor with argent mantling. The shield: argent three bars azure, and in the dextor canton azure an arm or clenched with sword. The motto, 'Labore et honore' hangs below. 67. [Bookplate for J. W. Dunbar Moodie] Escutcheon divided per quarterly. Dexter chief and sinister base display three ships in full sail on azure (blue), below a tower over background gules (red). Sinister chief and dexter base display three arrow heads, argent (silver) on an azure base, with a hunting horn above a chevron, ermine. Above the escutcheon is a vizored helm with a naval coronet ; above that is a lion, passant guardant, holding a flag. The motto is inscribed in a scroll above the lion. 68. [Bookplate for J. W. Eastham] This is a pictorial bookplate created using black ink on white paper. The "Lions" mountain range is portrayed surrounded by flowers and wheat. 69. [Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 70. [Bookplate for J. W. Marsh] Black ink on green paper. 71. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso. 72. [Bookplate for James M. Wishart by Leslie Victor Smith] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a two line border surrounding a circular design of vines and leaves with the words 'EX LIBRIS' appearing at the top. In the upper third of the design at center appears a University of Toronto Medical School coat of arts bearing a skull and crossbones. Below the coat of arm to the left appears an open book and to the right appears a three-stringed harp. The initials of the designer, Leslie Victor Smith, and the date "1940" appear at the bottom of the design. Below the design appears the name of the owner. 73. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 74. [Bookplate for John George Mortlock by Charles William Sherborn] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon and crest framed by an elaborate circular bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a fret, azure (blue), and contain a chief, azure, charged with three fleur-de-lis, argent ; the second and third quadrants, sable (black), are charged with three annulets, argent, two over one, and contain a chevron, argent and engrailed. The escutcheon is crested by a closed dexter helmet resting upon the second quadrant, topped by a wreath and a lion sejant, with dexter paw elevated and resting upon a fleur-de-lis, argent. From either side of the helmet flows mantling and a banner which contains the Latin motto. The bordure also contains text. 75. [Bookplate for John Somers] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Earl coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664b, which is presumably owned by the same individual, but before his ascendancy to title. 76. [Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 77. [Bookplate for Joseph Jopling] Black ink on cream paper. Paper has some damage and discolouration. The crest features a forearm and hand holding onto a shell atop a crest-wreath. The shield is charged with white stars two over one. The stars have shading and have black spots on them. In the center of the shield between the stars is a black crescent moon facing to the left. In the inner curve of the moon is half a human face looking outward. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, serif font. 78. [Bookplate for Karl Heinz Orbach and Michael B. Kunze by F. W.] Brown ink on yellow paper. Nude woman with a cup in her left hand stands on top of a skull which rests on a book. Initials in the background. There is a flower watermark in the paper. 79. [Bookplate for L. M. Stauffer by Stanley Harrod] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield or escutcheon Argent (silver). On dexter side, a twelve-point etoile. On sinister side, a dexter arm holding a cup. A trefoil Argent protrudes from the middle base of the escutcheon. The front facing, barred helm bears the crest of a bearded man from the waist up holding a cup in his right hand. The helm is surrounded by mantling. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the text 'S H / L. M. Stauffer / 1917'. 80. [Bookplate for Lachlan Gibb] In black ink. This bookplate's design features an escutcheon with or (gold), azure (blue), and sable (black) designs, parted per cross and charged at the fess point with an additional coat of arms. The escutcheon is outlined by an ornate border and situated in the center of a rectangular frame, divided into quadrants. These sections feature a domed building, topped with a cross, a ship, three battle-axes and three beavers, respectively. The originator's Latin motto and name appear along the base of the frame.
