[Bookplate for Boys and Girls Library of the National Council of Jewish Women by G. H.] A large book with a man peeking out of its splayed pages hovers above a collection of images from children’s literature: ships, trains, flamingo, cat, knight on horseback,and other human figures. The symbol of the National Council of Jewish Women sits at the center of the book plate with the date of the organization's foundation. 3. [Bookplate for Jos-N. Chaussé M.D.] Black ink on cream paper. An oval border with decoration at the top and bottom surrounds an illustration of a naked female figure whose arms are turning into tree branches, referencing Daphne of Greek mythology. The women’s tree branch arms extend beyond the oval border. She is looking to her left with a laurel crown on other head tied with ribbons while her long black hair flows past her right shoulder. A long, curling ribbon wraps around her back upper body, across her torso, and then back around her legs. Text is printed on the ribbon in bold, black, capitalized, serif font. The woman stands with her ankles crossed and is wearing strappy open-toe flat shoes. She stands in front of an open book. In the top left corner of the left page are initials printed in capitalized, stylized, block font. The woman also stands atop of a closed book, with its pages facing the viewer. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate, text is printed in various stylized black fonts. 4. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 5. [Bookplate for Gabrielle Labelle] Black ink on cream paper. The border consists of two black lines on the left and right-hand sides. At the base of each side are black decorative spiraling lines. The top and bottom portion of the border are more elaborate. These borders are thicker with a thin black line on either side and a thick black line in the center. The border is wavy with the lines slanting on either side towards the center of the border. On the top and bottom center of the border is a small half circle decorated with black stripes. In the upper righthand corner of the bookplate is text printed in a stylized serif, capitalized, black font. In the middle of the bookplate is a drawing of a woman sitting at a tall desk reading an open book. The desk is narrow and tall with cupboard at the back. The cupboard is round at the top and the doors are decorated with simple slanted lines. The woman has her hair up and is wearing a dress with puffed sleeves decorated with a simple flower. The skirt of the dress is extremely large and round. The skirt extends out across the entire bottom half of the bookplate. Part of the skirt is decorated with stylized spiral lines and a flower. At the base of the skirt, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in a stylized cursive, black, sentence case font. 6. [Bookplate for A. C. Jones by Clare Victor Dwiggins] Black ink on cream paper. The border of the bookplate consists of intertwined thorny and leafy vines with thicker leaves in the corners. The top left and right corners also feature rose-like flowers. Near the top of the border, vines extend from the left and right sides towards the center of the bookplate design. Capitalized, black, whimsical font is at the top of the bookplate. Dots surround some of the words and some letters are looping or intertwined. In the center of the bookplate, a tall, thin, beautiful woman in a whimsical fluted dress stands atop a closed book. The woman’s hair is done up and decorated with flowers. Flowers also decorate the top of the dress, the bottom of which features a spiral pattern. The dress is cinched at the waist with a belt and similarly cinched around the thighs with a large ribbon tied in a bow. The bottom of the dress extends outwards and there is a lacey layer underneath. The woman is wearing slip-on high heels with bows on the front. Next to the large book the woman is standing on are two books, one small one in front of the book sitting on its side. The other book is standing upright and is behind the large book. The woman is bending towards a small, naked cherub with a single curl atop its head and feathery wings. The cherub is standing in front of a book open and standing on its pages with the spine up. The cherub is also holding an open book and looking smilingly up at the woman. Behind the woman, the bookplate creator’s name is printed in curling, capitalized, black font. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is printed in black, gothic, sentence case font. 7. [Bookplate for Mary Alice Peck] Black ink on grey paper. The top portion of the bookplate features a series of vines on which appear to be bell shaped flowers, beneath which lies the owner's name. 8. [Bookplate for University of British Columbia Library] Black ink on white paper. Stylized UBC shield lies on top of Lions Club symbol. Text above and below picture. 9. [Bookplate for University of British Columbia and Alice Ravenhill] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate features a border consisting of several black lines with X designs in the corners. There is the University of British Columbia crest. The chief has a dark background and features an open book with its straps lying out. The university motto is printed in stylized black font on the book’s open pages. The bottom section of the map was alternating black and white lines. From the bottom of the shield is part of a sun with its rays extending upwards. The sun is charged with black dots. To the right of the shield is stylized gothic text in large, black font. Below it is text printed in smaller, cursive, black font. At the bottom of the bookplate is smaller text printed in the gothic, black font with dotted lines next to the words. 10. [Bookplate for Dorothy Maclaren Hepton by William Walker Alexander] Brown ink on cream paper. A plain border with a thin brown outline on the outside and thick brown outline on the inside. The image in the center of the bookplate is surrounded by a decorative background. The background has brown dots overlaid with thin white leaves on a stem. The stems curl around the left and right sides of the image. The image in the center is surrounded by a border comprised of three petaled leaves. At the top, bottom, left, and right of the border are two crossed strips covering the leaves. A dark inner border separates the decorative leaves from the center image. The image itself depicts two women sitting in an ancient Grecian scene. There is a building with arches in the left background. Next to the building, right behind the women is a large, shaded column. The foregrounded woman is sitting on a platform. Behind her is a small bowl of flowers. The same flowers decorate her dark hair in a floral crown. She is wearing a flowing white dress with a jewelry band around her right arm, which is holding onto her knees. At her feet is a lyre perched against another ledge. Behind the lyre is a dark, three-legged vessel with smoke pouring from it. There are some bushes behind the vessel and a plain horizon with a dark landscape and a pale sky. To the left of the vessel is a woman either standing or on her knees ; her legs are blocked from view by the sitting woman. The woman is playing a wind instrument, potentially an aulos. Her hair is in a half bun and half down. The ribbons in her hair are also flowing behind her head. Curling ribbons extend from below the image’s bottom border. A thicker ribbon rolls out below the ribbon. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, serif font. Each word in the owner’s name is printed on its own line, with each line becoming increasingly indented. Two daisy flowers on stems are printed to the left of the last word in the owner’s name. 11. [Bookplate for Montreal Children's Library] Dark brown ink on brown paper. An image of a young boy and girl in a library with many books open and on the floor. The young girl reaches up to pull down a book from the top shelf while the boy sits cross-legged on the floor reading. 12. [Bookplate for Alice Ravenhill] Heraldic bookplate executed in black ink on white paper. The bookplate consists of a simple shield above which is a ribbon with the motto: "Candide et Constanter" (fairly and firmly). 13. [Bookplate for E. F. Webb] In black ink. Decorative escutcheon, or [gold], parted per cross, gules [red] and sable [black]. In the first quarter, an eagle, displayed, sable. 14. [Bookplate for Franklin Billner] In black ink. Escutcheon tilted to the left and parted per pale. The dexter half, or [gold], with a lion, gules [red], coward, holding a fan-like object between its front paws. The sinister half parted per fess, sable [black], on a field, or, with decorative patterns not typically seen in heraldry. Escutcheon surrounded by leafy mantling. Above is a tilting helmet on top of which sits an unidentifiable crown. On top of the crown is a lion, gules, coward, holding a fan-like object in its front paws. Wings, displayed, fan out from the top of the crown surrounding the lion. 15. [Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 16. [Bookplate for Thomas Le Marchant] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is divided in a paly of three, or (gold) and azure (blue). Dexter and sinister palys, or, are charged with a tree. While the center paly, azure, is charged with middle chief, a label and at the fess point a lion rampant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four are gules (red) and charged with three boar heads. Quarters two and three are argent (silver) on a chief, gules, charged with two mullets, argent. Above the crest is a straight wreath charged with a demi-lion, rampant, who clutches a scythe. The demi-lion is charged with two fleur-de-lis and below the escutcheon is a banner containing Le Marchant Thomas' Latin motto. 17. [Bookplate for Thomas Taylor by James Cole] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black) charged at the nombril point with a lion statant. The rococo escutcheon has scalloped edges at the top and is surrounded by vegetative mantling. Hidden in the mantling is the creator's signature, Cole sc. Above the crest is a straight wreath charged with a leopard statant and below the escutcheon is a banner containing Taylor's Latin motto. 18. [Bookplate by James Gourlay Gray] Metallic brown black ink on cream paper. Border of two thin black lines with floral and leafy decorative features on the left and right sides. Latin script printed at the top of the bookplate in capitalized font with curling serif. An inner border surrounds two images. The top image has a black background with four white shining stars in the background. In the centre is a half circle strip with curled sends over marbled colouring, all of which surrounds sheet music. On top of the sheet music is a small harp-like instrument with horns protruding from it. At the top of the heart is a candle holder with smoke swirling from the top. On the outer left-hand side of the half-circle decoration is a reclining woman styled like a classical status in a draping dress. She is holding a pan flute in her right hand. On the right hand side, another similarly styled woman is reclining and holding a paint easel with several brushes in her left hand. Both women are barefooted. The bottom image has a thick marbled border. Within the border is a curlicue decoration, in the centre of which is an image of a work desk. There is a photograph hanging on the wall behind the desk. The desk itself is quite cluttered and features many photographs, papers, and books. The walls have decorative wall paper and there are various wall hangings. Below that section are two horizontal strips of different decorations. The top stripe has a dark snake like curving pattern, the borders of which are decorated with stylized, pointed lines. Thin white stripes are at the top and bottom of the horizontal strip. A row of small white dots separates this pattern from the next strip, which is a series of floral leaves curling in a line to meet at the centre. Below that, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized serif font with extra stylizing on the “A”s. 19. [Bookplate for Holford Walker] Pictured in black ink on white paper, is a bird close enclosed within a serpent ouroboros on a crest wreath with mantling extending from it, above a shield argent (silver) ; a bordure, argent ; with eleven quaterings. 20. [Bookplate for Dilys Jones] Printed in black ink on faded red paper. Heraldic crest is top centre.
