[Bookplate for John George Mortlock by Charles William Sherborn] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon and crest framed by an elaborate circular bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a fret, azure (blue), and contain a chief, azure, charged with three fleur-de-lis, argent ; the second and third quadrants, sable (black), are charged with three annulets, argent, two over one, and contain a chevron, argent and engrailed. The escutcheon is crested by a closed dexter helmet resting upon the second quadrant, topped by a wreath and a lion sejant, with dexter paw elevated and resting upon a fleur-de-lis, argent. From either side of the helmet flows mantling and a banner which contains the Latin motto. The bordure also contains text. 22. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 23. [Bookplate for Jenkins] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a furry lion passant reguardant standing atop a castle tower. The castle tower is above a crest-wreath. Elaborate, curling, feathery black and white mantling extends from the top of the shield and expands out along the sides. The shield is divided per pale. The left section has a white background with black dots and is charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. The right section of the shield is charged with a bird perched on a tree branch growing out of the ground. There is no background except for the branch and ground that is lighter on top and darker at the bottom. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon below the shield. There is shading on the ends of the ribbon. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in a more stylized, paler, capitalized, black serif font underneath the motto. 24. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Green ink on white paper. Thin green border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded green font. Below the letters is text in pseudo-gothic sentence-case font. Underneath that text is a small green circle with two lines extending from its left and right. Below is text in the previous pseudo-gothic font in a larger size. There are several images underneath the text. There is a line of three images: an open book with curling pages in the center with a six-pointed star on either side. The left star has a plus sign in the middle and the right star has a question mark in its center. Three more images are below: a green owl on a branch in the center with lit oil lamps on either side. The lamps each point inwards towards the owl and sit on thin green lines. Below the images is a thin green oval border that is straight on the top and bottom sides. Inside is curling thin green text sitting on a thin green line. At the right end of the line is another thicker perpendicular green line dividing the oval into two uneven sections. 25. An ornate border composed of curlicues houses the name and number of the bookplate. 30. [Bookplate for J. Hunt Stanford] An armorial bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A buck couped argent (silver) with antlers or (gold) gorged gules (red) with a crest wreath, argent and azure (silver and blue), sits on a visored helm facing dextor with argent mantling. The shield: argent three bars azure, and in the dextor canton azure an arm or clenched with sword. The motto, 'Labore et honore' hangs below. 31. [Bookplate for Howard Murray] In black ink on cream coloured paper. This bookplate depicts a sitting room with two chairs and a window looking out on trees, rolling hills and a body of water. A scroll at the base containing the originator's name is flanked by a pile of books. 32. [Bookplate for Hôpital Général d’Ottawa No. 6] Stamped in black ink on textured, yellowed paper. In the centre, a white cross is depicted on top of a mound of earth. At the centre of the cross, the Catholic icon of the Sacred Heart is depicted: a heart with a flame above it. From the earth, a vine of ivy grows and weaves around the cross. This image is framed by two banners above and below, which bear two phrases in French: “J’ÉTAIS MALADE ET VOUS M’AVEZ VISITE / JE SUIS L’ APPUI DU FAIBLE.” This is enclosed within a circle, which is framed by another circle with a scalloped edge that contains the identification: “SOEURS GRISES DE LA CROIX / OTTAWA.” The entire image is framed with a single black-line border of a wavy line with simple scrolled decorative marks at all four corners. 33. [Bookplate for Henry Young and Alice Young by Joseph Winfred Spenceley] In black ink on beige paper. In the centre, standing on the name plate, is the image of knight crusader, holding with outstretched arms a broad ribbon inscribed with the word "Credo." His Norman pointed shield hangs in front of his sword from a strap at his left hip ; the charges, untinctured, are: barry of five, in canton a leopard contournd. At either side of him rises a large acanthus-like scroll surmounted by a leopard's head ; behind him hangs an arras curtain, draped and knotted at the top. Across the base ripples a ribbon, inscribed "Ex libris Henry and Alice Young." The whole is enclosed in a narrow, formal frame. 34. [Bookplate for Hart House] This bookplate's design is divided into three sections. At the top, the University of Toronto shield sits to the left of the text. McLaughlin by Francis Adams Sc.] Lion’s head atop crown ; Arms of shield: 1st quarter - the “Dalriadic Royal Lyon” on dotted background, 2nd quarter - hand holding cross, 3rd quarter - galley with oars, 4th quarter - salmon swimming ; Supporters: does standing on either side of shield ; motto underneath ; “HLF” monogram at bottom. 37. [Bookplate for George G. Campbell] Bookplate consists of text in both hand script and letterpress. 38. [Bookplate for George Francis Steele by E. J. W.] In black ink on white or cream paper it depicts a nude male figure riding a Pegasus in the upper left surrounded by a swirl of stars, planets, and other astronomical bodies. Another nude, winged male figure in the lower right holds a quill pen in his right hand and in his left, the end of a ribbon on which "EX LIBRIS / AD ASTRA" is written. A dark dome, possibly representing a planet, occupies the lower left. There are blue smudges, possibly ink, across the lower third of the bookplate. 39. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 40. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title.
