[Bookplate for George G. Campbell] Bookplate consists of text in both hand script and letterpress. 22. [Bookplate for David Bond] Bookplate design features a woodland scene, of a brook and foliage at foreground and trees at back. Bookplate text contained within banner at top. 23. [Bookplate for David Bond and Elizabeth Bond] Bookplate design features an eagle in flight in foreground, with compass in background. Bookplate owner names at base. 24. [Bookplate for Robert Wilson Reford] Bookplate executed in black ink on white paper and consists of text and a simple border. 25. [Bookplate for Norman H. Friedman by A. G. Racey] Brown ink on cream paper. A man is seated in a wing chair by the fire, wearing slippers and reading a book ; his face is not visible but his pipe pokes out from behind the chair. A fire is roaring in a brick fireplace behind him, with a bust labeled 'Kipling' on the mantelpiece ; the mantel is inscribed with the words 'Be a reader but not a book keeper' with initials below the quote that appear to read A.G.A. In the foreground, there are piles of books and manuscripts and a small dog. 26. [Bookplate for Mae Burke Craft by A. H.] Central image is of a window with gables to the left and right above a large number of deciduous and coniferous plants and shrubs. The window looks onto a scene with an empty fireplace and a roman mantle above it holding a mounted mirror on top of it. There are various other pictures and bookcases/books held within the room in addition to an open book sitting on an antique armchair partly facing towards the open window. Hanging from the mantlepiece above the fire is a family crest, but it is too small to discern more than general details. The whole image is surrounded by a triple filleted black border. 27. [Bookplate for Henry Young and Alice Young by Joseph Winfred Spenceley] In black ink on beige paper. In the centre, standing on the name plate, is the image of knight crusader, holding with outstretched arms a broad ribbon inscribed with the word "Credo." His Norman pointed shield hangs in front of his sword from a strap at his left hip ; the charges, untinctured, are: barry of five, in canton a leopard contournd. At either side of him rises a large acanthus-like scroll surmounted by a leopard's head ; behind him hangs an arras curtain, draped and knotted at the top. Across the base ripples a ribbon, inscribed "Ex libris Henry and Alice Young." The whole is enclosed in a narrow, formal frame. 28. [Bookplate for James Butler] In black ink on cream or tan paper, the bookplate consists of a decorative border made of daggers and double daggers. The border has rounded corners. The manuscript addition is in brown ink. 29. [Bookseller's Ticket for W. C. Chewett and Company] In black ink on white or yellow paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a double border surrounding black text. 30. [Bookseller's Ticket for James Bain] In black ink on white paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a serpentine black border with decorative elements in the four corners surrounding black text in roman and italic type. 31. [Bookplate for Seeli Armitage-Stanley and Earl Spencer] In black ink on white paper, this heraldic bookplate consists of an Escutcheon quartered per cross and incorporates aspects of both the Armitage and the Stanley family crests. The dexter chief and sinister base sections are drawn from the Stanley crest and contain an azure (blue) garter, which holds three stag's head caboshed, on argent (silver). The sinister chief and dexter base quarters, taken from the Armitage crest, are gules (red) with three crosslets argent, two in chief and one in base, and a lion's head in fess. The helm consists of two helmets, to signify the incorporation of the two families, and is surrounded by mantling. Above the helm there is a small banner bearing the Armitage family motto, 'semper paratus.' Below the Escutcheon is another banner bearing the motto of the Stanley family, 'sans changer.'. 32. [Bookplate for E. W. Neville by Marjorie Sankey] In black ink on yellow/brown paper. The elaborate façade of a building is held up by a large tree with many roots. The owner’s name is featured in the gate entrance. The thick paper features chain and laid lines. 33. [Bookplate for Basil Woodd Smith] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an ovular garter as bordure around the originator's name. The Latin motto is present on the garter. 34. [Bookplate by Francis Adams Sc.] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First quarter, or, a lion, gules, rampant. Second quarter, argent, an arm embowed fessways holding an axe shaped like a cross formy. Third quarter, argent, a lymphad, sails furled, on water. Fourth quarter, argent, a fish on water. Shield supporters, two horse-like beasts with short tails, combatant. Helm, a diadem topped with a lion, couped. Below the escutcheon is a banner with mantling containing the Latin motto. 35. [Bookplate for James Phinney Baxter] In black ink. This ex-libris includes a portrait of the originator in the upper-right-hand corner, identified by his name and geographic locale. The remaining two-thirds of the bookplate consist of a depiction of the interior of a library. In a section spanning the base of the bookplate is a cursive, printed motto and a hand-written book number. The printed text is drawn from the last two lines of the second stanza of a poem composed by Baxter, entitled, "The Library." 36. [Bookplate for Henry Augustus Sims] In red ink on white paper, a border that contains red and black text and black decorative designs. Within the border, in black ink, there is an angled Escutcheon parted per pale. The dexter side is gules (red), containing a chevronel or (gold) with two mullets of six points, pierced, in chief, and one battle axe in base. The sinister side is quartered per cross by a cross argent (silver), with the dexter chief and sinister base quarters in azure (blue) and the sinister chief and dexter base quarters in gules. In each quarter save the sinister base there is a pheon proper. Above the Esctucheon, the mantling is topped by a wreath, from which a lion emerges, holding a battle axe. Below the Escutcheon is a banner bearing the motto, 'Ferio Tego.'. 37. [Bookplate for Claude Lamont Wheeler] Printed in black ink on greenish gray paper, the bookplate consists of a two line border surrounding the name of the owner. In the lower left corner appears the word 'No.' followed by a dotted line for the addition of a hand-written number. The number '33' has been written in ink. 38. [Bookplate for Antony F. C. Tétrault] Printed in black ink on white paper, the bookplate shows an open book in front of a lit, winged torch. Below the book appear the words 'EX LIBRIS' below which sits a black dividing line approximately 1.2 CM long. Below the line appears the word 'DATE:' below which appears a dotted line for the addition of a hand-written date. Below the dotted line appears the name of the owner, 'Antony F. C. Tétrault.'. 39. [Bookplate for Claude Lamont Wheeler by C. Collmen] Printed in black on white or cream paper. In the upper left corner of the bookplate appear the words 'NULLA DIES SINE / LINEA' followed by four upward pointing arrows or crosses. To the right in the upper center of the bookplate appears a framed portrait of a horned figure (the devil?). The center of the bookplate shows the caricatured figure of a man sitting at a roll top desk. His tall wooden chair leaves his feet dangling above the ground. The man holds a lit cigar in his left hand and quill pen in his right hand. The desk, the wastepaper basket to the right of it, and the floor around it are littered with sheets of paper. Several books, as well as an owl and a human skull sit on the top of the desk. To the left, an over-sized pair of scissors leans against the man's chair. To the right of the desk appears the name of the illustrator, C. Collmen(?). Below the illustration appears a white bordered box with the words 'Ex Libris,' below which appears the name of the owner. 40. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw.
