[Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 22. [Bookplate for Howard Murray] In black ink on cream coloured paper. This bookplate depicts a sitting room with two chairs and a window looking out on trees, rolling hills and a body of water. A scroll at the base containing the originator's name is flanked by a pile of books. 23. [Bookplate for United Service Club] This bookplate's design features a royal crown above a thistle, clovers, a rose, and two surrounding branches. 24. [Bookplate for William R. Ridell] Shield, argent (silver), charged with a chevron, gules (red), and three garb, aulned. Above the crest is a greyhound, rampant ; only top half of dog is visible behind a wreath of vert (green) and a second colour, unclear. Beneath the shield is a banner which ends in two tassels on either side, reading 'I hope to Share.' Box on lower left side for entering book number, unused. Tear at bottom right. 25. [Bookplate for James Fielding Sweeny] At the top center of the bookplate is a mitre with a crosier on the left side and a banner on the right side. Below that is a crest with argent (silver) background, divided by per pale ; on the sinister side, a mitre and key are crossed, with a coronet, two books, and a dove, holding an olive branch. On the dexter side, two battle axes crossed above two boars, rampant, counterpassant. Beneath that is another crest, divided per pale. The sinister side has an argent background and two battle axes, crossed, above two boars, rampant, counterpassant. On the dexter side, is a lion, rampant. At the base of the bookplate is an alley of columns. 26. [Bookplate for Frederic Lumb Wanklyn] In brown ink on white paper, a flying duck within a darkened circle is at the centre of the bookplate. It appears to be affixed to a post, on top of which there is a sign that reads 'Ex Libris F.L. Wanklyn.' The post is standing in a marsh. 27. [Bookbinder's Tickets for Marjory Todd and John Todd] 1) Printed in black ink on bright yellow paper the bookbinders ticket features a two line border surrounding the name (first line) and location (second line) of the company. 2) Printed in black ink on yellow paper features a border made up of alternating double-s, or section, symbols and double dagger symbols with asterisks in the four corners. The border surrounds the name (first line), services offered (second and third lines) and location (fourth line) of the company. 28. [Bookbinder's Ticket for Leger Brousseau] A rectangular ticket, black ink on faded blue or grey paper. 29. [Bookseller's Ticket for James Bain] In black ink on white paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a serpentine black border with decorative elements in the four corners surrounding black text in roman and italic type. 30. [Bookplate for Dunbar Browne] A floral, somewhat art nouveau style border surrounding the text. 31. [Bookplate for James Croil] Printed in black ink on light green paper. It has a border of entwined lines. 32. [Bookplate for Pierre Louis Deschenaux] The bookplate has a border of small bows surrounding the text. The majority of the text is in a bold serif font, and the word “Quebec” is in italics. 33. [Bookplate for D. Guthrie] The owner’s name, occupation, and city are centered and printed in black ink, surrounded by a decorative scroll and floral border. 34. [Bookplate for D. Girouard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features right arm bent at elbow holding the top half of a spear on crest-wreath. Shield has sable and argent stripes, charged with three two-pointed flags two speckled sable on argent flags over one argent flag facing left. The top two flags are speckled, sable on argent, and the bottom flag is argent. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capital letters on ribbon with curling ends. Name typewritten in cursive sentence font. 35. [Bookplate for Nicholas Garry] Printed in black ink on off-white paper. In the centre is a family shield, decorated with with a chevron pattern in solid black and white ground with a spotted pattern. A ‘V’ shape in the centre of the shield intercepts and counterchanges the chevron colours. Above this is an extended arm in armor holding a circular disc that repeats the pattern on the shield. 36. [Bookplate for Henry James Grasett] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features bow loaded with arrow aimed to the left. Feathers stretch outwards on either side of the base of the bow on a crest-wreath. Shield is argent and sable per saltire, divided with a sable cross. Top and bottom quarters are argent charged with a plant with round top and brush head. Feathery leaves appear at either side of the base. Top feature has two sable stylized decorations featuring roundels three over two atop three lines connected at the top that separate outwards at the bottom. Four of the same decorations are featured in the bottom quarter. Left and right quarters are sable charged with five point stars and a stylized design element similar to those in the top and bottom quarters, but thicker and in argent. The shield is surrounded by a stylized border decorated with various curls. Below the shield, the motto is written in capitalized block letters on ribbon with elaborately curled blackening ends. 37. [Bookplate for J. H. Hagarty] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features an armoured arm holding on to a sabre. The arm is coming out of a crest-wreath. The shield is argent with a sable chief. The chief is charged with three white birds trussed. The bottom section of the shield is argent and charged with a tall, leafy tree. The tree has three roots extending out. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, block, sans serif white letters. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, cursive font. 38. [Bookplate for Hôpital Général d’Ottawa No. 6] Stamped in black ink on textured, yellowed paper. In the centre, a white cross is depicted on top of a mound of earth. At the centre of the cross, the Catholic icon of the Sacred Heart is depicted: a heart with a flame above it. From the earth, a vine of ivy grows and weaves around the cross. This image is framed by two banners above and below, which bear two phrases in French: “J’ÉTAIS MALADE ET VOUS M’AVEZ VISITE / JE SUIS L’ APPUI DU FAIBLE.” This is enclosed within a circle, which is framed by another circle with a scalloped edge that contains the identification: “SOEURS GRISES DE LA CROIX / OTTAWA.” The entire image is framed with a single black-line border of a wavy line with simple scrolled decorative marks at all four corners. 39. [Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 40. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw.
