[Bookplate] A coat of arms with mantling: Quarterly, 1st and 4th azure, 2 bars dancetty or, in chief 3 bezants ; 2nd and 3rd azure, a fess engrailed argent, surmounted by another, not engrailed, gules, charged with 3 roses argent, between as many swans, proper. Above the coat of arms are two crests: left is a swan gorged, wings displayed and inverted, on a wreath ; right is a bull at gaze, gorged and on a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a ribbon containing the Latin motto. 2. [Bookplate for William Martin] In black ink on cream paper, a double border surrounding a coat of arms. The coat of arms is Argent two bars Gules six bezants 3 and 3, with ornate mantling especially to the upper right and left of the shield, surrounding the crest of an eagle displayed over a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a draped manner with the Latin motto and below that is the name in a Gothic script. 3. [Bookplate by Colonist Lithography] In black ink on cream paper. The top center contains the coat of arms, flanked by elaborate leafy scrollwork. In the center is text in multiple bold fonts identifying the book number and library number (with gray rectangles where these numbers were handwritten). The bottom third contains the small text rules. Surrounding everything are two thin borders, between which, on the bottom edge, is the name of the lithographer. 4. [Bookplate] Black ink on white paper. Shield consists of yellow (or) cards on a black (sable) field. Crest is a hand holding a yellow card. Motto in scroll below arms. 5. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw. Below the shield is a motto. 6. [Bookplate for William Leaf] Printed in black ink, the book plate features the crest of William Leaf: A dove rising, resting the dexter claw on a leaf, on a torse. 7. [Bookplate for Ludger Gravel] Printed in blue ink, surrounded by a border composed of three wavy lines, the bookplate features a coat of arms. The Jerusalem Cross is borne in red on a gold field in the chief. The lower shield features Hermes and the Caduceus on a red field. It is topped by a closed helm of gold, in profile. A banner is beneath the coat of arms, as well as the owner’s name. 8. [Bookplate for Albert Prince by Dempsey and Carroll] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross, with quarters one and four also divided per cross. Within quarters one and four, the sub-quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with three lions passant guardant (for England). Sub-quarter two is or (gold), with a tressure-flory-counter -flory, charged with a lion rampant (for Scotland). Subquarter three is azure (blue), charged with a harp decorated with harpy figure features, stringed (for Ireland). The entire escutcheon is charged with a bar dovetailed, or a label, a cadency mark indicating being the eldest son (during his father's lifetime). Quarters two and three have a barry of ten, or and sable (black), with a bend in the shape of a ducal crown (without the cap). Surrounding the escutcheon is a garter, with first French motto within. Above the escutcheon is a royal crown. Supporting the escutcheon at dexter is a lion guardant, charged with a label. At sinister is a unicorn rampant, also charged with a label, as well as a royal crown without the cap as a collar. Below the escutcheon is a ribbon, with second German motto within. The entire achievement is surrounded by very fine lines, giving the impression of shadow. 9. [Bookplate for Erich Falfenroth and Michael B. Kunze by F. Nickel] In brown ink, a sun radiates light over the background of the image from the top left corner. Included in the background is a crescent moon in the top right corner, an hourglass, in the lower left corner, and a compass in the lower right corner. In the foreground is a chaplet encircling a coat of arms. Atop the helm is a bird, possibly a falcon. The helm itself is front facing and grated (no significance in German heraldry). From either side of the helmet flow elaborate sprawls of mantling which curl down to the sides of the escucheon. The escucheon, in gules, (red) represented by lines drawn from chief to the base, is bordered in or (gold). Centered in the shield is a heavily bound book, with what appear to be latches to prevent unworthy eyes from reading its contents. From the top and bottom of the book flow a place marking ribbon. 10. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. This bookplate appears to be a smaller version of BP MUR SL P H475b, but the creator's initials are barely visible amongst the mantling. 11. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. The bookplate designer's initials and the date of creation are hidden among the mantling. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. A smaller version of this bookplate may also be viewed at BP MUR SL P H475a. 12. [Bookplate for Sir W. G. Gordon Cumming] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon braced between two white horse supporters. The escutcheon is quartered and counter-charged. Two quarters contain three garbes on an azure (blue) background, two over one. The other two quarters contain three garters, sable (black), charged with three roses each, on an argent (silver) background. The shield also contains an inescutcheon charged with a coat of arms. Atop the escutcheon is a helm and mantling. The helm is crested by a curved wreath and a lion, rampant, holding a dagger in its right paw. Above the lion is a banner containing the English motto. Below the shield and its supporters are more ornamental mantling and a suspended banner. 13. [Bookplate for M. Nazapen] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three mullets at fess point and a crescent below, held aloft by two cubit arms. The escutcheon is supported by lions, positioned rampant guardant at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at a direct front view with a grated helm. Upon the helmet is a ducal coronet, from which three large plumes extend, along with elaborate mantling. Above the mantling and supporters are two crests: at dexter, a straight wreath is charged with an arm embowed with armour, clutching a scimitar. At sinister, a straight wreath is charged with arm embowed, clutching a Scottish flag. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 14. [Bookplate for Lachlan Gibb] In black ink. This bookplate's design features an escutcheon with or (gold), azure (blue), and sable (black) designs, parted per cross and charged at the fess point with an additional coat of arms. The escutcheon is outlined by an ornate border and situated in the center of a rectangular frame, divided into quadrants. These sections feature a domed building, topped with a cross, a ship, three battle-axes and three beavers, respectively. The originator's Latin motto and name appear along the base of the frame. Above the rectangular design are two straight wreaths charged with a dexter arm vambraced couped, holding aloft a battle-axe and an eagle bearing a tilting spear. 15. [Bookplate for Sir Robert Peel] In black ink. Armorial bookplate. Argent (silver) three sheaves of as many arrows proper, banded gules (red). On a chief azure (blue) a bee volant, or (gold). Crest of a demi-lion rampant argent, gorged with a collar azure, charged with three bezants, holding between the paw a shuttle, or. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 16. [Bookplate for Marcus Brown Westhead] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield quartered. First and fourth quarter, argent, two barrulets dancette sable, between three Saracens' heads couped at the shoulders proper, wreathed round the temples, of the first and second. Second and third quarter, azure, on a fesse argent, between three martlets in chief, and the Roman fasces erect surmounting two swords in saltire, and encircled by a chaplet in base or, three chess-rooks sable. Center inescutcheon, party per chevron or and azure, in chief a mullet of six points lies between two crosses pattée of the last, and in base the front elevation of a chapel argent, the whole being charged with a crescent for difference. First crest, on a wreath of the colors, within a fetterlock or, a Saracen's head couped proper, wreathed round the temples argent and sable. Second crest, on a wreath of the colours, a demi-eagle displayed with two heads azure, charged on the breast with the fasces, swords, and chaplet, as in the arms. The escutcheon is surrounded by mantling and below a banner bears the motto 'ORA ET LABORA.'. 17. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline.
