81. [Bookplate for B. E. Hutchinson] [Bookplate for B. E. Hutchinson] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate has two sections. The first section has thick borders on the left and right with white outlines. The top border is like a shelf with a slightly shorter, darker section below a longer, paler section. Within the frame is a picture of a house built on the shore of a river. The river is foregrounded at the bottom of the frame. The cliff is rocky with a few trees on it. The house is large and has a brick chimney on the right side. Behind the house are several taller trees. Below that image is a shelf-like structure. The top and bottom shelves are supported by Grecian-style columns. A row of books is shelved in between the two columns. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, capitalized, serif font. Each letter is printed on a spine of a book so the name is off kilter when the books are slanted. In front of the shelved books is an open book propped up on a closed book.
82. [Bookplate for Charles Theodore Hart] [Bookplate for Charles Theodore Hart] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features the head of a stag in profile on a crest-wreath. The shield is pointed at the top left, top right, and bottom corners. The bottom of the shield curves to a central point. The shield is argent with a sable chevron charged with two stars on the top left and top right sides. The stars are white with black shading and a black circle in the center. Below the chevron the shield is charged with a springing stag. Below the shield the motto is printed on a ribbon in capitalized, serif font. Underneath the motto is the bookplate owner’s name in curling, italicized font.
83. [Bookplate for A. T. Higginson] [Bookplate for A. T. Higginson] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a knight’s armoured right arm extending from a crown. The crown is decorated with black ermines and wraps around a black top that looks like cloth. The ends of the crown do not meet, but instead extend out to a point to the right. The arm has a twisted rope with dangling ends hanging from the hand and the hand clutches a weapon that is a spear on one end and has two prongs on the other end. The shield is argent with sable dots and a sable pale. The dexter and sinister portions of the shield are surrounded by a white border marked off with a thin black line. The pale is charged with a stone castle tower with a door and three windows. The pale is also charged with two white circles, one above and one below the tower. The bottom and right hand side of the shield is shaded with black. Below the shield, a ribbon with curling ends features the motto printed in capitalized, black, sans serif font. Underneath the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in larger, sentence case, black, Gothic font.
84. [Bookplate for John George Hodgins] [Bookplate for John George Hodgins] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a displayed black bird on a crest-wreath. At the top left of the bird, next to the tip of its wing, is a small radiating sun with a face in the middle. There is an esquire’s helm surrounded by dark, feathery mantling. The border of the shield is similarly elaborate. The shield is argent and charged with an argent cross with thin black border around each rectangular section. The shield is also charged with five black flowers that have five round petals and a circular black center. There is a flower in each corner of the shield and one in the center of the cross with a thin, black, square border. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with curling, darkened ends. The motto is written in black, capitalized, serif font. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, sentence case, Gothic font.
85. [Bookplate for A. C. Jones by Clare Victor Dwiggins] [Bookplate for A. C. Jones by Clare Victor Dwiggins] Black ink on cream paper. The border of the bookplate consists of intertwined thorny and leafy vines with thicker leaves in the corners. The top left and right corners also feature rose-like flowers. Near the top of the border, vines extend from the left and right sides towards the center of the bookplate design. Capitalized, black, whimsical font is at the top of the bookplate. Dots surround some of the words and some letters are looping or intertwined. In the center of the bookplate, a tall, thin, beautiful woman in a whimsical fluted dress stands atop a closed book. The woman’s hair is done up and decorated with flowers. Flowers also decorate the top of the dress, the bottom of which features a spiral pattern. The dress is cinched at the waist with a belt and similarly cinched around the thighs with a large ribbon tied in a bow. The bottom of the dress extends outwards and there is a lacey layer underneath. The woman is wearing slip-on high heels with bows on the front. Next to the large book the woman is standing on are two books, one small one in front of the book sitting on its side. The other book is standing upright and is behind the large book. The woman is bending towards a small, naked cherub with a single curl atop its head and feathery wings. The cherub is standing in front of a book open and standing on its pages with the spine up. The cherub is also holding an open book and looking smilingly up at the woman. Behind the woman, the bookplate creator’s name is printed in curling, capitalized, black font. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is printed in black, gothic, sentence case font.
86. [Bookplate for Harry E. Jones] [Bookplate for Harry E. Jones] Shiny texturized black ink is raised off the white paper. An elaborate border surrounds the central image. The border has two thin black lines on the outside and then has a series of repeating leafy floral shapes. The floral design is quite pointed and recurs in square sections all around the border. At each corner the design points out towards the corner. The inside of the border is surrounded by a thick black line. At the top of the border, an unfurled banner that is wider than the border sites atop of it. Text is printed in capitalized, block serif font. Below the ribbon, within the borders, is a picture of two monks looking at a large book with text and illustrations. One monk is standing in shadow, his back illuminated by the sunlight streaming in from a window outside the frame on the right side of the bookplate. At the forefront is a seated monk, also with his back to the sun, who is holding the book open while the other monk points at a section. The monk is sitting in a wooden chair with small cutout designs on the back. The table is also wooden and is covered with other books and a feather quill in an inkwell. In front of the desk, a large book with a decorative cover rests against the table leg. To the left of the book is a plain vase. At the base of the image, atop the lower portion of the border, is another ribbon featuring text printed in black, sentence case, serif font.
87. [Bookplate for Rev. Wm. Hamilton] [Bookplate for Rev. Wm. Hamilton] Black ink on pink paper. The bookplate depicts a heraldic shield placed at an angle in a nature scene. A leafy tree trunk extends up alongside the right side of the shield and leafy branches arch over the top of the bookplate to the left. At the base of the tree trunk is a globe in a stand. Two closed books are placed in front of the globe on grassy ground. There is some foliage next to the bottom left of the shield as well. Regarding the heraldry, the crest features a tree growing from a crown with leafy points and a diamond pattern on the base. The tree trunk grows through a saw like rectangle, upon which a motto is printed in capitalized, serif, block font. The tree extends upwards into a dense leafy top. The shield has sable stripes, charged with three flowers, two over one. The flowers are stylized with four elaborate petals around a round center. There are some decorative curlicue elements on the side borders of the bookplate. Curling, curving lines extend from the left side of the bookplate like mantling. A white cloth is draped over the top right corner of the shield and pools onto the ground below. At the base of the shield, another motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in curling, sentence case cursive.
88. [Bookplate for P. Gagnon] [Bookplate for P. Gagnon] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a beaver lying on a crest-wreath. There are maple leaf branches extending from both sides of the beaver. The beaver is surrounded by a half-circle border with the motto in black, capitalized sans-serif font written across the arc. The shield is divided per fess, with the top half being further divided per pale and the upper left hand portion is divided into three horizontal sections. The topmost left hand section is argent with sable dots charged with two fleurs-de-lis. The middle left hand section is argent with sable stripes charged with a lion passant. The bottom left hand section is argent with sable dots charged with three maple leaves connected at the stem. The upper right hand side is argent charged with two pieces of equipment, one atop the other, and a pair of scissors below. The equipment has a small curved bottom with two long, curving handles on top with a spike pointing through the lower end of the handles. Below the top half is a thin black banner with white capitalized sans-serif text. Below the banner is an image of a natural forest and coastal landscape with a ship with two tall masts in the water. On the coast, there are people, possible colonizers, interacting. A large cross has been erected on the coast on the right hand side of the image. The dexter supporter and sinister supporter are moose standing a curling ribbon with text in capitalized black sans-serif font.
89. [Bookplate for Peter Edward Hicks] [Bookplate for Peter Edward Hicks] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a stag head. The stag has large antlers and has a leafy wreath around its chest. The stag sits on a crest-wreath. The shield has sable stripes and is charged with three white fleurs-de-lis, two over one. The shield is divided per fess. The dividing section is curved and argent with sable stripes. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, serif, black font. The words are separated by black dots. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, cursive font.
90. [Bookplate for Paul Gouin] [Bookplate for Paul Gouin] Black ink on cream paper. Border consisting of two thin black lines with solid black squares in the corners. Capitalized black serif-font written inside the border around an image. Image depicts a wooden house with a road in front. There are several clouds in the sky. There is a large tree in front of the side of the house, with the branches of another tree in the top right corner. The house has a wooden fence. In the foreground in the bottom right corner is grass.
91. [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod by S. Harrod] [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod by S. Harrod] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate image is surrounded by a border consisting of wide ribbons at the top and bottom wrapped around twisted rope on the left and right sides. The rope ends are knotted with three beaded and then frayed ends extending on each end of the rope. The top ribbon has printed, black, stylized gothic font in sentence case. Some text is separated by clusters of four diamonds. Inside the border is an image depicting a frigate with two masts and large sails billowing in the wind. Ribbons extend form the top of the sails. A smaller sail on a smaller mast is at the front of the ship. The ship is in an ocean with several waves. The bottom ribbon is more elaborated curling than the top ribbon. It has printed, black, stylized font in sentence case, but is smaller in size. Below the ribbon to the left and right is thin, sans-serif, capitalized font.

The image depicts a young girl holding hands with a book, pushing open the gates of Fairy Land, toward a castle in the background. Plate lines are visible around the bookplate image. It is signed by the illustrator. Pictorial.
93. [Bookplate for G. P. Girdwood] [Bookplate for G. P. Girdwood] Oval-shaped circular border with legend containing a motto printed in capital block letters across the top half. Bottom half of the border has shading, decorate circles, and a decorative end. Border made to look like a ribbon, one end of which loops over the bottom of the oval. End of the ribbon has thin borders, circular decorations, and almost tapers to a point with decorative curls at the end. In the center of the oval is a demi-lion rampant guardant. In its right paw, the lion holds a tree with round foliage at the top and sprawling roots at its base. Below the image is text written in stylized sentence-case serif font.
94. [Bookplate for L. Emile Grothé by Aimé Dufesne] [Bookplate for L. Emile Grothé by Aimé Dufesne] Black ink on white paper. Border has white outlines, shaded for a three-dimensional effect and is filled in with thin black lines. The top and bottom sides of the border indent in the middle with squared corners. The left and right sides of the border indent in the middle with rounded corners. The top half of the bookplate has diagonal black lines extending wider from the centre. The top left corner features a person wearing a feathered headdress and a sash holding arrows in their left hand and a bow in their right hand. They are standing on a decorative ledge connected to the border and sitting atop of an elaborate curlicue. The right corner has the same curlicue and ledge and a person in a long coat and striped hat holding a pouch stands atop it. Between the two figures is an open book. The bottom of the top half of the bookplate contains half a round map of the world surrounded by a thick border of the same style as the overall bookplate border. The owner’s motto is written across the map’s border in thin, capitalized, sans-serif font. A rectangular border of the same design sits in the centre of the bookplate. The top of the border features large, captitalized, serif block font. The font is white with a black background and white stripes surrounding that background. On either side of that text are half circle decorations in a vertical stack between two thin white borders. The centre of the rectangle within the borders has a grey background with capitalized, sans-serif block font printed on top. The font is black with a white outline and dark shading. Two shields hang below the rectangle on the left and right side. The shield on the left is argent with sable dots per fess. The top third of the crest is charged with two fleurs-des-lis. The central portion of the crest, featuring sable and argent stripes. is charged with a lion passant guardant. The bottom third of the crest is charged with three maple leaves with connected stems. The shield on the right is per pale consisting of sable and argent stripes and argent with sable dots. The left side is charged with two lions passant that are argent with sable dots. The right side is charged with a lion sejant erect and eight hearts, each of which are sable and argent striped. Between the two crests, hanging from the central rectangular feature, is a checkered black rectangle with white borders on the left, right, and bottom sides. White curlicues extend from the left and right sides. Similar curlicues, leafy decoration, and black strip adorned with small circles extend from the bottom of the rectangle. The background of the bottom half of the bookplate not covered with other decorative features has the same black stripes as the top half. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate are four books each, spines facing out. Next to the books on the left is a black inkwell with two feather quills in it. Next to the inkwell is a beehive on a wooden platform surrounded by five bees. On the right of the beehive is an oil lamp with a bright flame burning. Outside the bottom border, inside the indent, the bookplate creator’s name and date of creation is printed in thin, black, sentence-case, serif font.
95. [Bookplate for Hôpital Général d'Ottawa No. 6] [Bookplate for Hôpital Général d’Ottawa No. 6] Stamped in black ink on textured, yellowed paper. In the centre, a white cross is depicted on top of a mound of earth. At the centre of the cross, the Catholic icon of the Sacred Heart is depicted: a heart with a flame above it. From the earth, a vine of ivy grows and weaves around the cross. This image is framed by two banners above and below, which bear two phrases in French: “J’ÉTAIS MALADE ET VOUS M’AVEZ VISITE / JE SUIS L’ APPUI DU FAIBLE.” This is enclosed within a circle, which is framed by another circle with a scalloped edge that contains the identification: “SOEURS GRISES DE LA CROIX / OTTAWA.” The entire image is framed with a single black-line border of a wavy line with simple scrolled decorative marks at all four corners.
96. [Bookplate for Frank John Joseph] [Bookplate for Frank John Joseph] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a bushel of wheat tied with a ribbon around the center atop a crest-wreath. Shield is divided per chevron. The background is black and it is charged with five smaller bushels three over two. The three bushels are above the chevron and the remaining two are below. The shield is decorated with an elaborate white border. Below the shield, the motto is printed in black, capitalized, block sans serif font on a curling ribbon with decorative ends. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, sentence case gothic font.
