[Bookplate for Georgian Club and Michael B. Kunze by Beatrice J. Ennie] This image portrays, in black ink, on white paper, a young woman, clothed in Victorian fashion including headpiece. She is reading a book which is resting on the back of a chair. Upon the seat of the chair are two closed books. To the woman's left is a grandfather clock, and on the floor, at the base of the clock are two more closed books. The entire image, including the text, is bordered by a picture frame. 22. [Bookplate for Maurie Barrett] Printed in black ink on beige paper, with a glued back. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion atop a larger crown, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion stands firm with his rear right leg forward as if indicating an intent to pounce. This position, with all four paws on the ground and head turned to face the viewer, is known as statant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 23. [Bookplate for Ödön Stern and J. E. Horvath by B. I.] Black ink on cream paper. This bookplate combines Art Deco and Egyptian style and imagery. The black ink provides the background with most of the objects delineated in white from the paper. A figure in profile to walks towards the right of the scene holding high three books in offering. Behind the figure there is a curtain with a weaved pattern. Further back on the right hand side there is a vase with flowers, and two urns. One sits on the floor. Fire rises from the second one on a stand. 24. [Bookplate by M. Trinque] This bookplate includes both a pictorial image and a heraldic symbol. The image, in black ink, depicts three soldiers in the process of laying communications cable. One soldier holds the spool of cable, another cuts the cable with pliers, and the third soldier keeps a look-out, rifle on back. The heraldic symbol, in coloured ink, contains an escutcheon divided per fess by an engrailed line. The top half is a dark shade of azure, while the bottom half is a light shade of azure. The escutcheon includes a sinister bend of blue, white, and red, representing the French flag. From the dexter chief to the sinister base are three fleur-de-lis. On the top of the shield is a torch, possibly representing Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa during World War II. On both the right and left sides of the shield are signal flags, providing more indication that this coat of arms belongs to a communications unit. The left flag is a small red square within a larger white square, and the right flag is the reverse. At the base of the shield is a ribbon containing four stars. Below the image, there is space for entering a name of ownership, but it has been left blank. 25. [Bookplate] In purple ink, this is a textual book owner's stamp. 26. [Bookplate for Clark. William Mortimer] In black ink, a circular belt/garter provides the border. Within is a cat, sejant rampant, upon a straight crest wreath. The belt contains the English motto. 27. [Bookplate for John T. Jeffcock] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarter, sable (black). A chief, argent (silver), three ravens, trussed, sable. A chevron, or (gold). Three pickaxes, two over one. Cadency, crescent, linking the first and second quarters. Second quarter, parted per cross. First and fourth sub-quarter, argent, an eagle, displayed, sable, with a canton, vert (green), a buck, lodged. Second and third quarters sable, the lower half of the shield a barry of six pieces, argent and sable, a square castle, turreted, two in pale two in fess. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a mountain and an arm embowed holding a long pointed weapon with a circular handle. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the English motto. 28. [Bookplate for James Phinney Baxter] In black ink. This ex-libris includes a portrait of the originator in the upper-right-hand corner, identified by his name and geographic locale. The remaining two-thirds of the bookplate consist of a depiction of the interior of a library. In a section spanning the base of the bookplate is a cursive, printed motto and a hand-written book number. The printed text is drawn from the last two lines of the second stanza of a poem composed by Baxter, entitled, "The Library." 29. [Bookplate for David Bond] Bookplate design features a woodland scene, of a brook and foliage at foreground and trees at back. Bookplate text contained within banner at top. 30. [Bookplate for Charles Fyfe by R. P.] Bookplate printed in black ink, with a purple/blue ink, rubber-stamped annotation. This ex-libris depicts a woman reading to a young boy on a park or garden bench. The idyllic landscape behind them features a lake with two swans swimming in it. Further in the distance is a forest with the silhouettes of two figures standing among the trees and large dramatic clounds sweeping by in the background. 31. [Bookplate by Owen Staples] In black ink on white paper, a clock is pictured in the top right corner (possibly a grandfather clock), and a table stands in the foreground. On the table there are several items: a framed portrait of a man, a few books, a vase holding some flowers, and a paint palette and some brushes. There is a lyre on either side of the name at the bottom. 32. [Bookplate for Grace Svenningson] In black ink on white paper, two columns frame the sides of the bookplate, with a banner stretched behind them at the top. Thick vines are hanging from the banner, and a few are wrapped sparsely around the columns as well. There is an urn on the bottom left with some gentle hills in the background. The name is printed in red ink at the bottom of the plate. 33. [Bookplate for Lesslie M. Sweetnam by F. F. H.] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate shows a figure reading a book while sitting at a roll top desk with his / her back facing the viewer. The desk is flanked on either side by full bookcases and is topped by a reading lamp, additional books, and a small picture frame. Two framed objects hang on the wall above the desk. 34. [Bookplate for Andrew Allan] In black ink on red paper, this bookplate features an ornate border surrounding text in the center. 35. [Bookplate for Sir Lawrence Palk by Ezekiel Abraham Ezekiel] In black ink: Sable, an argent eagle displayed, an argent bordure engrailed ; at the precise middle chief, the inesceutcheon of a baronet (argent, a hand gules) ; surmounted by a wreath of argent and sable, the crest a demi-globe or hemisphere ['semi-terrestrial globe of the northern hemisphere'], an eagle rousant, wings displayed and elevated ; motto on a ribbon below the shield. The bottom right corner of the bookplate was torn away and has been replaced with a light paper. 36. [Bookplate for Brockville Library] In black ink on tan paper, the bookplate consists of a double zigzag border surrounding black text. The library name at the top is flanked by two rosettes and separated from the remaining text by a decorative rule. 37. [Bookplate] A lion rampant holding a stemmed (slipped) rose above the entwined letters G or C and H, through which is woven a banner with the Latin phrase. The bookplate is rendered in some kind of red ink, which is raised from the paper both from embossing (visible on the back) and a way that the ink itself is raised from the paper. 38. [Bookplate for Pretre L. Bertrand] An ornate border of foliage, flowers, ribbons, and musical instruments surrounds the text. Below the printed text is a manuscript note. The back of the bookplate is covered in marbling, presumably lifted from a book when the bookplate was removed. 39. [Bookplate for Burton’s Limited Circulating Library] In black ink on tan paper.
