The library name is written in capital letters of different sizes and serif font styles. Sentence case serif font indicates the card number space. Handwritten notes in pencil in the card number section and on the verso of the bookplate. 42. [Bookplate for Booklovers' Library] Blue ink on white paper. Thin border surrounds text. 43. [Bookplate for Caldwell] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon, containing three sable (black) piles arranged in chief, and four alternating wavy bars of gules (red) and vert (green). Each pile contains a roundlet. Each roundlet has wavy barry of seven pieces, plate (silver roundlet) and hurts (blue roundlet). The crest is a demi-lion rampant grasping a broken scimetar, all proper on a wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 44. [Bookplate for Canadian Pacific Railway News Department] This book ownership stamp is in blue ink on what was an interior page of a book. This page is accompanied by the title page of the book, with the title "The U. P. Trail". 45. [Bookplate for Charles Collier] Bookplate design consists of an escutcheon azure (blue), with a fess argent (silver), charged with three heraldric roses, two over one. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet, along with mantling. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a human figure holding a heraldric flower. Below the shield is a banner containing Latin motto. 46. [Bookplate for Charles Gery Milnes] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, and contains an inescutcheon at the fess point. The first and fourth quadrants of the escutcheon, azure (blue), contain a chevron, argent (silver), charged with three millrinds. The first quadrant differs from the fourth in that only two millrinds are visible, as one is covered by the inescutcheon, and it contains a canton at the dexter chief, or (gold), charged with a trefoil, sable (black). The second and third quadrants, gules (red), are charged with three lion heads, two over one, and contain a fess, argent and engrailed, charged with two escallopes, azure. The inescutcheon, gules, contains two bars, argent, charged with three mascles (open faced lozenge) each, gules ; and a canton at the dexter chief, or, charged with a roundlet, hurts (azure). The escutcheon's crest is a straight wreath, topped by a ducal coronet and an elephants head, dexter and erased, with tusks. 47. [Bookplate for Charles M. Harris] This bookplate's monochromatic design created in peacock blue ink depicts the interior of an ornately decorated library. The scene features a man on a ladder perusing book titles. The man seems unable to select only one book. He appears to have his hands full, and yet he continues to scan shelved titles for other desirable volumes. He holds one book in his hand, one slipped under his elbow and another clenched between his knees. The image on this bookplate is a commercially available, mass-produced design. 48. [Bookplate for Charles Perrin Smith] This bookplate consists of a very detailed coat of arms, which is divided per pale. The first half at dexter has fifteen quarterings, which are as follows: azure (blue) with a chevron argent (silver), charged with a crescent, between three cocks ; sable (black) charged with three griffin's heads erased ; sable and argent (silver) divided per fess with a lion rampant ; argent charged with a lion passant, between three fleur de lis, two over one ; gules and argent, divided quarterly, charged with four lions passant ; or (gold) charged with a lion gules rampant ; ermine (fur) charged with a lion sable rampant ; azure with a chevron argent, between three cocks ; gules with two lions passant, one above the other ; ermines and sable, divided per bend sinister, charged with a lion sable rampant ; argent, a bordure engrailed or charged with three Griffin's heads, erased gules ; argent and gules, divided per quarterly, quarters one and four argent, charged with three boars' heads and quarters two and th. 49. [Bookplate for City of Halifax and Citizens’ Free Library] Black and blue ink on cream paper. A coat of arms for the city of Halifax is printed in the upper-portion of the plate in blue ink. Within this coat of arms stands a sailor on the left, with his hand placed on the crest containing a Belted Kingfisher on a grassy mound. Directly above the crest is a masoned Sable containing a sprig of mayflower. To the right is a fisherman holding a codfish by its head. Both figures and the crest are standing upon heraldic ribbon containing Latin phrasing within it. This portion is followed by the title of the library in Germanic lettering and the name of the town in cursive. 50. [Bookplate for Collège de Saint-Laurent] In black ink on white paper, at the top of this bookplate one finds a banner bearing the text “BIBLIOTHÈQUE DU COLLÈGE DE SAINT-LAURENT” [French: Library of Saint-Laurent College], below which sits the coat of arms of Quebec. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Or (gold) on a fess Gules (red) between two fleurs de lis in chief Azure (blue), and a sprig of three leaves of maple slipped Vert (green) in base, a lion passant guardant Or (gold). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “JE ME SOUVIENS” [French: I Remember]. On either side of the coat of arms of Quebec are shining five-point stars. Below the coat of arms of Quebec on the left is the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver). Text below. Other text in blue rubber stamp ink. 52. [Bookplate for David King by B.] Pictorial bookplate. A floral border (in blue, red, and gold) surrounds the bookplate text. At the bottom are both the creator's initial "B" and publishing information (Ludgate Circus House, H.V. Capsey, London, E.C.4). 53. [Bookplate for David Stewart Erskine] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered per cross, and contains an inescutcheon. The first quarter, azure (blue), contains three garbe, two over one. The second quarter is itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, azure with an or (gold) riband and six cross crosslets fitchy sable (black) ; the second and third quarters are argent (silver), with a pale, sable. The third quarter of the escutcheon is also itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, or, with a fess in checky (alternate squares of metal and fur), argent and azure ; the second and third quarters are azure, containing three garbe, two over one. The fourth quarter, argent, with six bars, gemelles (doubles), contains a lion rampant, sable and proper. The inescutcheon, gules (red) contains an eagle, displayed and proper, and a ray of sun issuing out of the dexter corner. Atop the escutcheon is the coronet of an earl, topped by a grated helmet (peer), dexter. Upon the helmet is a curved crest wreath and a dexter cubit arm holding a club. From either side of the crest flows elaborate mantling. The escutcheon is accompanied by two supporters. The dexter supporter is an ostrich, while the sinister supporter is a griffin. Below the escutcheon and the supporters is a banner containing the English motto. 54. [Bookplate for Ditton Park] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), divided per pale. The left armorial is charged with three fusils, gules (red). The right armorial has a chief, azure (blue), the charged with three mullets. The lower half is charged with a crowned heart, possibly a preperesentation of a Claddagh. 55. [Bookplate for Dufferin School John Frothingham Library] Printed in navy ink, a geometric border with ornate corners surrounds the text of multiple fonts. The coat of arms of Montreal is raised in blue with accompanying banners. The shield is topped with a crown and features a red saltire with four different charges between the arms: a rose, thistle, clover, and beaver. The bookplate includes a watermark. Beneath the coat of arms is a blank space with a number handwritten in grey ink, followed by the title of the school and a note on the school’s history. 56. [Bookplate for Dunham Methodist Sunday School] Black ink on cream paper. A thin, vine-like border houses the text. No content lies outside of this border. Inside, the name of the school library is centered in the upper portion. A fillable number section is located in the central portion, with the number 216 erased out and the number 56 written to the right of it in blue ink. Beneath this section is a small printed hand icon pointing towards a note instructing the user of the library usage policy. In the portion of this note for the librarian to write the number of days until it’s due is written the number 14 in pencil. 57. [Bookplate for Durham Mechanics’ Institute Library] Black in on cream paper. A four-lined border frame with black iron crosses in each of the four corners. Within this border is the printed name of the library, followed by a curlicue. Beneath this sits a number line with a blank line. In blue ink, a number and letter are written. 58. [Bookplate for E. Rolfe by R. B. Hughes] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gyronny of eight pieces, or (gold) and argent (silver) and a chief, or. The chief is charged with three annulets. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, divided quarterly. The first quadrant is divided per pale, vert (green) and gules (red), and is charged with a fleur-de-lis. The second quadrant is divided per fess, dancetty, sable (black) and ermine (powdered white fur with black tufts) ; the upper sable half is charged with two escallopes on either side of a baron's coronet. The third quadrant, or, contains a fess checky, argent and azure (blue). The fourth quadrant, sable, is charged with a crescent. Above the escutcheon is a curved crest wreath and a garbe. 59. [Bookplate for Earl Gower by Griffiths and Weigall] This heraldic bookplate consists of a escutcheon, divided per cross or quarterly. Quarters one and four are argent (silver) with bars, gules (red) and charged with a cross patonce, sable (black). Quarters two and three are azure (blue) charged with leaves, two over one. The escutcheon is supported by two wolves rampant. Upon the escutcheon is a crown of earl status (minus the internal cap). Above the escutcheon is a crest of a wolf passant upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. 60. [Bookplate for Edward Andrew Donaldson] In black ink. An escutcheon divided quarterly ; first and fourth quadrants, or (gold), a double-headed bird displayed, sable (black), above a lymphad showing three dexter flags, gules (red) ; second and third quadrants, gules, fess checky argent (silver) and gules, with two arrows argent. Also, two inescutcheons, or, with a hand gules. One inescutcheon is located in the centre of the escutcheon and the other in the top corner of the dexter chief. A escutcheon has a bordure, indented and azure (blue), with seven belt buckels, one at each corner of the escutcheon. The crest is a closed dexter helm, argent, with mantling. Atop the helm is a bare cubit arm grasping a dagger. There is a lance extending from the top dexter corner of the escutcheon, displaying a banner. The banner encirles a Latin cross and an anchor, and contains the Latin motto. Also, there is a triangle which contains a three-masted ship in the top left hand corner.
