[Bookplate for Rev. Wm. Hamilton] Black ink on pink paper. The bookplate depicts a heraldic shield placed at an angle in a nature scene. A leafy tree trunk extends up alongside the right side of the shield and leafy branches arch over the top of the bookplate to the left. At the base of the tree trunk is a globe in a stand. Two closed books are placed in front of the globe on grassy ground. There is some foliage next to the bottom left of the shield as well. Regarding the heraldry, the crest features a tree growing from a crown with leafy points and a diamond pattern on the base. The tree trunk grows through a saw like rectangle, upon which a motto is printed in capitalized, serif, block font. The tree extends upwards into a dense leafy top. The shield has sable stripes, charged with three flowers, two over one. The flowers are stylized with four elaborate petals around a round center. There are some decorative curlicue elements on the side borders of the bookplate. Curling, curving lines extend from the left side of the bookplate like mantling. A white cloth is draped over the top right corner of the shield and pools onto the ground below. At the base of the shield, another motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in curling, sentence case cursive. 22. [Bookplate for Toronto Public Library by J. E. H. MacDonald] In brown ink on white paper, a boy and a girl are standing with their backs to each other in front of two shelves of books. Around the children are four circular images: a ship at sea, a knight holding a shield, a beaver, and a wheel and tools. 23. [Bookplate for K. H. Ingalls by Ralph Fletcher Seymour] A portrait bookplate with a multiple black fillet border surrounding the central images used in the bookplate. The bookplate has all 12 images of the zodiac held in small circles surrounding the periphery of the central image. At the top and bottom left and right hand corners of the image are images of vines. Central to the bookplate is the image of a wicker chair held in the bottom left hand corner next to several books sitting on a reading table. The chair is facing a brick fireplace against the far wall above which are the word "BIDE-A-WHILE". In front of the fireplace is a bear skin rug. A highbacked wooden bench with three books on it sits off on the adjacent wall to the left of the image. A similar bench sits to the right of the fireplace. A clock and several other knickknacks sit on the mantelpiece above the fireplace. 24. [Bookplate for Marguerite H. Powter by Clare Victor Dwiggins] Black ink printed on yellow paper. A woman in fanciful dress leans over a cherubic figure who is holding an open book. Books are scattered on the floor, below which is the bookplate owner's name. The entire scene is framed by vines and flowers. 25. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 26. [Bookplate for A. L. Beverly] Black ink on white paper. Text in center surrounded by border. Handwriting on the back of the bookplate. 27. [Bookplate for National Gallery of Canada Library by Alfred H. Howard] Burgundy ink on cream paper. Three young boys respectively engaged in painting, drawing and sculpting are enclosed by a large circle, at the center of which lies an open book. The entire bookplate is surrounded by a multi-layered border. The artist's remarque is in the lower right hand corner of the border. 28. [Bookplate by Colonist Lithography] In black ink on cream paper. The top center contains the coat of arms, flanked by elaborate leafy scrollwork. In the center is text in multiple bold fonts identifying the book number and library number (with gray rectangles where these numbers were handwritten). The bottom third contains the small text rules. Surrounding everything are two thin borders, between which, on the bottom edge, is the name of the lithographer. 29. [Bookplate for Ruth Goodell by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on yellow paper. The scene is framed by an architectural arch with a column on each side, decorated with stylized vines and leaves. At the top left- and right-hand corners, initials are separated by a banner in the centre. The background features a mountain with a silhouette of a tree (possibly a laurel) on the left-hand side. The foreground depicts an ancient Greek amphora (vase with handles) with a frieze of figures and decorative patterns. To the left is an open book with a scroll above it identifying the artist and date of the bookplate. To the right of the vase is a globe showing a stylized representation of North and South America. Other closed books surround these objects. 30. [Bookplate for Arch. F. R. Kozaka] Pictorial bookplate. The bookplate portrays a landscape with either haystacks or large rocks in the foreground and rolling hills in the background. 31. [Bookplate for George H. Fensom by Thoreau MacDonald] In black ink. Landscape featuring a cabin overlooking a lake. 32. [Bookplate for E. W. Neville by Marjorie Sankey] In black ink on yellow/brown paper. The elaborate façade of a building is held up by a large tree with many roots. The owner’s name is featured in the gate entrance. The thick paper features chain and laid lines. 33. [Bookplate for Lewis Harcourt] There are several black fillets separating the top and bottom banners from the central and side images present on the bookplate. The sidebars of the bookplate have vines trailing down the die. The central image is an armorial. The image begins with a peacock symbolizing renewal or resurrection standing on top of a coronet on top of a closed helm facing dexter. The helm surmounts a shield leaning from the dexter chief to the sinister base. Both the helm and the shield are surrounded by mantling on either sides. The shield is a gules field with two bars of or. This bookplate belonged to Baron Lewis Harcourt of Nuneham who was an important administrator within the British government during the early decades of the 20th century. 34. [Bookplate for Andrew J. Kirpatrick] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate has a thick black border with a thin inner white border. The bookplate is divided into two parts: the larger part has black corners that round on the inside. A thistle is printed in white on each corner. There is a white border with a thin black border inside it. At the top, a banner with curling ends sweeps across the bookplate. On the banner, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. Below the ribbon, an armoured arm extends from a crest-wreath. The right hand is clutching a dagger with the blade pointing to the left. Plants with leaves and berries on a branch extend from the left and right-hand sides of the bookplates. Below that image, there is a white horizontal rectangle with a thin black border. Inside the rectangle, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in cramped, stylized, large, black block font. 35. [Bookplate for Stephen W. Borden by Carol Ann Borden] Pictorial bookplate. Portrays a landscape with tree, grass and flowers. 36. [Bookplate for H. R. N. Flyne by E. F.] Pictorial bookplate. A man seated in a chair, reading and smoking, with piles of books (and a martini) around him. The artist's name and year are inscribed on one of the books in the lower right corner. 37. [Bookplate for Samuel C. Harvey] Textual bookplate. 38. [Bookplate for S. Yates Johnstone] Armorial bookplate. Silver shield with a dark red saltier ; in the top of the shield are three gold cushions on a red background. Surrounding the top of the shield is an elaborate mantling above which is a crest with a wreathe and a winged spur. Below the shield is the Latin mottoe "Nunquam non paratus" (never uprepared). 39. At the centre of the shield is a two-headed black eagle with its wings and legs spread and its heads turned to opposite sides. On the chest of the eagle is a square with a black X.
