[Bookplate for Hugh Lyle Smyth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing an invected bend, azure (blue). The escutcheon is charged with two unicorn heads, gules (red) and erased, at dexter base and sinister chief ; the bend is charged with three lozenges, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a dexter closed helmet, which is topped by a ducal coronet and a unicorn head, gules and erased, with lozenge, ermine. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 22. [Bookplate for E. Rolfe by R. B. Hughes] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gyronny of eight pieces, or (gold) and argent (silver) and a chief, or. The chief is charged with three annulets. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, divided quarterly. The first quadrant is divided per pale, vert (green) and gules (red), and is charged with a fleur-de-lis. The second quadrant is divided per fess, dancetty, sable (black) and ermine (powdered white fur with black tufts) ; the upper sable half is charged with two escallopes on either side of a baron's coronet. The third quadrant, or, contains a fess checky, argent and azure (blue). The fourth quadrant, sable, is charged with a crescent. Above the escutcheon is a curved crest wreath and a garbe. 23. [Bookplate by W. Bowles and J.W. Leigh] This bookplate is rendered in a circular motif, with three escutcheons pivoting the centre. The first crest is gules (red), charged with three ducal coronet, positioned two over one, with a roundlet or (gold) at centre. The second crest has a chevronelly of eleven or and azure (blue). The third crest is gules, charged with three inverted wildcat heads on fleur-de-lis, two over one. The entire assemblage is contained within a circular pattern, with Latin name in the border. The original artist of the crest is J.W. Leigh, indicated by "Inv." at the base of the design. 24. [Bookplate for Hood] This bookplate consists of a escutcheon, azure (blue) and a fret, argent (silver), with a chief, or (gold), charged with three crescents. The shield features an inescutcheon or, with a chevron sable (black), charged with three wildcat heads cabossed, two over one. Above the inescutcheon is another small escutcheon argent, with a human hand gules, indicating the status of Knight and Baronet. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, and the escutcheon is supported by a merman at dexter and a mermaid at sinister. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire achievement is bookplate owner's name. 25. [Bookplate for John Somers by James Ross] This heraldric bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Baron coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664a, which is presumably owned by the same individual after his rise to title. 26. [Bookplate for John Somers] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Earl coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664b, which is presumably owned by the same individual, but before his ascendancy to title. 27. [Bookplate for G Wirthrich] In black ink. Decorated escutcheon is parted per fess. Top, gules (red), a man cut off at the hips, bearded, with a downturned arrow in his right hand, a club in his left, a rapier in his mouth, and wearing a rounded hat. Bottom, azure (blue), a battle-axe and a club crossed. Supporters, two gryphons combatant with arrowed tongues standing on stairs. Above the escutcheon is a ducal coronet. 28. [Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 29. [Bookplate for Castle-Freke Library by Griffiths and Weigall] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, with the dexter half divided into six, each with unique charges, and the sinister half, gules (red), charged with a simple fess or (gold). The dexter half is charged with three cross crosslet fitched, two over one. The escutcheon is supported by two lions, rampand reguardant. Above the escutcheon are two crests, both straight wreaths charged with an ox's head couped and a lion rampant reguardant holding another beast's head. Above the crests is a baron coronet. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Bookplate is cut to border, which has blunted corners. 30. [Bookplate for Geo. Campbell] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarters, gyrony of eight pieces, argent [white] and sable [black]. Second and third quarters, argent, a ship with three oars, furled sails, and two flags, gules [red]. Supporters, lioncels combatant. Above the escutcheon is a marquess coronet. The crest consists of a straight crest wreath and a boar, couped close. 31. [Bookplate for Harold Hampson] This bookplate's design features a collared greyhound's head, erased, above a mural coronet. Below a banner waves containing the originator's Latin motto. 32. [Bookplate for William H. Hutton] In black ink. The bookplate design features a ducal coronet with three arrows pointing downward towards a straight wreath. 33. [Bookplate for J. W. Dunbar Moodie] Escutcheon divided per quarterly. Dexter chief and sinister base display three ships in full sail on azure (blue), below a tower over background gules (red). Sinister chief and dexter base display three arrow heads, argent (silver) on an azure base, with a hunting horn above a chevron, ermine. Above the escutcheon is a vizored helm with a naval coronet ; above that is a lion, passant guardant, holding a flag. The motto is inscribed in a scroll above the lion. 34. [Bookplate for Coombe] In black ink. This ex libris displays a sable (black) escutcheon with two bars, argent (silver). The coat of arms is charged with seven bees volant, three-over-three-over-one. The escutcheon is charged with a straight wreath and at the crest a demi-lion rampant. Around the neck of the lion is a coronet. Below the escutcheon appears a banner containing the originators Latin motto. The verso of the ex libris is faintly marbled. 35. [Bookplate for James Fielding Sweeny] At the top center of the bookplate is a mitre with a crosier on the left side and a banner on the right side. Below that is a crest with argent (silver) background, divided by per pale ; on the sinister side, a mitre and key are crossed, with a coronet, two books, and a dove, holding an olive branch. On the dexter side, two battle axes crossed above two boars, rampant, counterpassant. Beneath that is another crest, divided per pale. The sinister side has an argent background and two battle axes, crossed, above two boars, rampant, counterpassant. On the dexter side, is a lion, rampant. At the base of the bookplate is an alley of columns. 36. [Bookplate for Joint Board of Theological Colleges] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate banned frame with leaf sprigs houses the text. At the bottom of the frame, the letters MTD are incorporated amid a sprig. The outside of the frame is decorated with a repeating leaf pattern. The corners of the frame are four shields. The top left tablet shield is dotted (gold) and charged with an undecipherable center object. An open book sits atop the shield. The top right tablet shield is horizontally lined (azure) and charged with a downward facing bird (dove) at the chief and an open book at the base. A tree sits atop the shield. The bottom left Norman pointed shield is horizontally lined (azure) with a cross (argent). It is charged with an open book with writing over the center of the cross. A coronet sits atop the shield. The bottom right spade shield is blank (argent) and is charged with an anchor.
