[Bookbinder's Tickets for Joseph Fortier] 1) In dark blue ink on white paper, the bookbinder's ticket is in the shape of a closed book, with the spine on the left and text on the font cover. The front cover of the book is a field of blue with text and design elements in white / reversed-out text. A white field with blue text in the lower half of the book cover provides space for a handwritten reorder number. 2) In black ink on pink paper, the bookbinder's ticket consists of a thin black border surrounding black text. 2. [Bookplate for Henry Forbes Angus by Jack Macdonald] An art nouveau, pictorial bookplate using black ink on ivory paper. In the background is a sun with four series of rays alternating black and white. In front of the sun is a left hand holding a quarter-bound book with a floral statue on the cover (consisting of a circle of leaves encircling three white flowers with black centres, which are on top of a trunk). At both the dexter and sinister corners are black squares ; in the dexter square are the initials J / M. 3. [Bookplate for Mary Katharine Black by Thoreau MacDonald] This pictorial engraving was created using black ink on white paper and portrays an island with two wind-swept trees with a rising/setting sun on the horizon. 4. [Bookplate for Marjorie Vivien Smith] A winged horse in flight among stars at night framed by a border with stars and planets is depicted. Bookplate still affixed to a portion of the book cover that has been cut out ; book is "The Voluntary worker in the social services. Report of a committee jointly set up by the National Council of Social Service and the National Institute for Social Work Training under the chairmanship of Geraldine M. Aves" (Beverly Hills, Calif., Sage Publications: 1969). 5. [Bookplate for Hudson's Bay Company and Gordon Elliott] In purple ink, text within a round indented border. 6. [Bookplate] In purple ink, this is a textual book owner's stamp. 7. [Bookplate for Gladys Granger] This heraldic bookplate is a much stylized form which echoes common features of a traditional heraldic shield. The escutcheon is an oblong round shape in Chippendale style, gules (red), charged with a pomegranate. Upon the escutcheon is a crest of an arm embowed fessways, clutching three stocks of wheat or corn. Surrounding the escutcheon is an ornate border, surrounded by leaves and flowers. Below the escutcheon is a banner styled the same way as the escutcheon, with owner's name within. 8. [Bookplate for William Charles de Meuron Wentworth-FitzWilliam by John Vinycomb] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon framed by a solid bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; first and fourth quadrants are lozengy, argent (silver) and gules (red) ; second and third quadrants are sable (black) with an or (gold) chevron, and three lion heads, two over one. The escutcheon is crested by a large earl's coronet. Above the coronet are two additional crests ; the dexter consists of a helm, sinister and grated, crowned by what appears to be a duke's coronet, and elaborate mantling ; the sinsister consists of a helm, dexter and grated, topped by a curved wreath, a gryphon passant, and elaborate mantling. The escutcheon and bordure are supported by a male "savage" on either side. In heraldry, the "savage" is a symbol of wildness and purity. Both figures are bearded and nude, except for a wreath of leaves to cover their middle section. Both figures hold a tree trunk. The dexter figure, who appears younger, holds the trunk with his right arm and it descends behind him. The sinister figure, who appears older, holds the trunk with his left arm and it descends in front of him. The escutcheon and the figures rest on a mantel, which is draped with a banner containing the Latin motto. From the mantel hang three medals ; the medal on the left represents the Order of the British Empire, the medal in the centre represents the Royal Victorian Order, and the medal on the right represents the Distinguished Service Order. 9. [Bookplate for John T. Jeffcock] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarter, sable (black). A chief, argent (silver), three ravens, trussed, sable. A chevron, or (gold). Three pickaxes, two over one. Cadency, crescent, linking the first and second quarters. Second quarter, parted per cross. First and fourth sub-quarter, argent, an eagle, displayed, sable, with a canton, vert (green), a buck, lodged. Second and third quarters sable, the lower half of the shield a barry of six pieces, argent and sable, a square castle, turreted, two in pale two in fess. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a mountain and an arm embowed holding a long pointed weapon with a circular handle. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the English motto. 10. [Bookplate for Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal] Printed in black ink on blue paper, an intricate border evocative of a tabernacle and constructed of fountains, geometric repeating patterns, and a cross surrounds the text. 11. [Bookplate for Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal] Printed in black ink on cream paper, an intricate border evocative of a tabernacle and constructed of geometric repeating patterns topped with a cross surrounds the text. Above the text is a symbol featuring a cannon and two flags. 12. [Bookplate for Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal] Printed in black ink on cream paper, an intricate border evocative of a tabernacle and constructed of geometric repeating patterns topped with a cross surrounds the text. Above the text is a symbol featuring a cannon and two flags. 13. [Bookplate for Hill’s Library] Black ink on yellowing paper. Typewritten text in capital letters and bold followed by sentence case letters in varying serif font sizes. There is a thin line with stylized dots in the centre separating text. Below the line, text is written in large, capitalized, bold serif font. Below that is text written in bold, sentence case. Text is then written in non-bold capital letters. There is a thicker, stylized line with three dots in the centre separating text. Below the line is text written in capital sans serif font, followed by text in smaller, bold sans serif font. Further text is right aligned and written in italicized serif font. Text is then written in capital and sentence case serif font in multiple sizes with section separated by dots. Graphic of hand with index finger pointing right is next to capital, sans serif font. A squared squiggled line is below the finger graphic and above faded text in serif font. Below that is serif font in capital letters and then bold serif font in bold letters. That is separated from bold, capital, serif font with a squared, squiggled line. The following serif font is bold. Below that is larger, bolder serif-font. The following text is written in smaller sentence case and capitalized serif font. Below that is sentence case serif font, followed by larger sans serif font and then bold, capitalized, serif font. The last part of the text is written in sentence case serif font. Handwritten notes cover some of the typewritten text on the right side of the bookplate until approximately halfway down the bookplate. The bottom two corners of the bookplate have been cut off. The bookplate appears to be printed on top of a newspaper or magazine clipping, the recto of which is slightly visible through the bookplate. Black ink serif font text and some imagery are visible. The verso of the bookplate is clearly the other printed side of the magazine or newspaper with serif fonts in bold capital letters and non-bold sentence case letters. The recto of the original print is also slightly visible from the verso side. 14. [Bookplate for William Griffin and Florence Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Brown ink on cream paper. The bookplate has a perforated border with rounded corners. At the top left and right corners are flowers with four square petals and five leaves extending below. The floral decorations are quite simple, featuring only small lines. Between the two flowers is curling text in sentence case followed by five leaves with stems curling to the left and the tip of the leaves curling to the right. In the centre of the bookplate an open book. The book has enforced corners and a clasp on the cover. On the open left page is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. On the open right page is a cat sitting on a crest wreath. A link from a chain extends from the base of the book’s spine to attach to a sign with a thick white border. Atop a speckled background is capitalized and lower case font with stylized serif accents. Two links of chain are attached to this sign from below in the left and right corners. Between the chains are stylized curling, accents meeting in a decorative feature in the centre with a leaf extending downwards. Text is printed on the left and right hand side of the leaf. There is a handwritten note in pencil in the bottom right hand corner. 15. [Bookplate for Harry E. Jones] Shiny texturized black ink is raised off the white paper. An elaborate border surrounds the central image. The border has two thin black lines on the outside and then has a series of repeating leafy floral shapes. The floral design is quite pointed and recurs in square sections all around the border. At each corner the design points out towards the corner. The inside of the border is surrounded by a thick black line. At the top of the border, an unfurled banner that is wider than the border sites atop of it. Text is printed in capitalized, block serif font. Below the ribbon, within the borders, is a picture of two monks looking at a large book with text and illustrations. One monk is standing in shadow, his back illuminated by the sunlight streaming in from a window outside the frame on the right side of the bookplate. At the forefront is a seated monk, also with his back to the sun, who is holding the book open while the other monk points at a section. The monk is sitting in a wooden chair with small cutout designs on the back. The table is also wooden and is covered with other books and a feather quill in an inkwell. In front of the desk, a large book with a decorative cover rests against the table leg. To the left of the book is a plain vase. At the base of the image, atop the lower portion of the border, is another ribbon featuring text printed in black, sentence case, serif font. 16. [Bookplate for John Jenkins D.D.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a white lion passant reguardant with black spots standing on the top portion of a stone castle tower. The tower sits on a crest-wreath. The shield is divided per cross. Around the shield is a curling border with leafy adornments and spirals on the sides. The border is thicker on the left, right, and bottom portion. The border does not cover the entire shield ; there are gaps at the top left and right corners and at the center of the base. The top left and bottom right sections of the shield are identical. They have a black and white striped background and are charged with a white chevron decorated with black dots. They are also charged with three white fleur-de-lis, two over one around the chevron. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are also identical. They have a white background with black dots and are charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with leafy ends that match the shield’s decorative border. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font.
