[Bookplate for E. J. Hodgson] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a bird perched on a crest-wreath. The bird has elaborate head and tail feathers and is holding a leafy branch in its beak. Curling, leafy mantling surrounds the shield, which is divided per chevron engrailed. The top portion of the shield is argent with sable dots and charged with two trussed sable striped birds. The bottom portion of the shield is sable striped and is charged with a trussed argent bird with sable dots. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with curling ends. The mottos is written in black, capitalized, sans serif font. The last s in “SPES” has been thickened by hand. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, sentence case, stylized gothic font with curling spirals. 222. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on tan paper. Curlicue and straight-line border. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters, with the institute name in sentence case gothic script. Separated by centered, thin straight lines, there is a left aligned field for class and a right aligned field for card number written in bold serif font. The lending rules are written in italicized serif font. 223. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name Is printed in sentence case, black, serif font. 224. [Bookplate for John Hamilton by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on cream paper. One motto is printed on a ribbon with ends that extend to two points at the top of the bookplate. Motto is printed in capitalized, serif block letters. Below that motto is a crest featuring a leafy tree growing out of a crown. The crown’s points are rounded and leafy. The base of the crown is decorated with horizontal diamonds. The tree trunk grows through a picture frame with a saw attached to the center. The free is growing through this frame/saw object and has extensive, dense foliage. The entire crest sits atop a twisted wreath. The shield has extended points to the top left and right and the bottom curls to a point. The shield is sable and argent, divided per quarterly. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with three white flowers, two over one. The flowers have distinct round centers and five individual, separate petals. The top right and bottom left section are argent and charged with a Viking-style ship with three oars, a flag pointing to the left at the front and rear of the ship, and a tall mast. The sail is rolled up on the mast in a horizontal line. Four lines extend from the sail down to the ship. There is a flag at the top of the mast, with two lines extending down to the sail. Curlicue mantling decorates the shield from the base upwards. A second motto is printed on a ribbon with two pointed ends at the base of the shield. The text is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. The name of the bookplate owner is printed below this motto in thin, sentence case, cursive font. In the bottom right corner the name of the bookplate creator is printed in small, italicized, sentence case black font. 225. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Green ink on white paper. Thin green border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded green font. Below the letters is text in pseudo-gothic sentence-case font. Underneath that text is a small green circle with two lines extending from its left and right. Below is text in the previous pseudo-gothic font in a larger size. There are several images underneath the text. There is a line of three images: an open book with curling pages in the center with a six-pointed star on either side. The left star has a plus sign in the middle and the right star has a question mark in its center. Three more images are below: a green owl on a branch in the center with lit oil lamps on either side. The lamps each point inwards towards the owl and sit on thin green lines. Below the images is a thin green oval border that is straight on the top and bottom sides. Inside is curling thin green text sitting on a thin green line. At the right end of the line is another thicker perpendicular green line dividing the oval into two uneven sections. 226. [Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 227. [Bookplate for Peter Edward Hicks] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a stag head. The stag has large antlers and has a leafy wreath around its chest. The stag sits on a crest-wreath. The shield has sable stripes and is charged with three white fleurs-de-lis, two over one. The shield is divided per fess. The dividing section is curved and argent with sable stripes. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, serif, black font. The words are separated by black dots. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, cursive font. 228. [Bookplate for Imperial Cotton Co. by R&M] Printed in black ink on cream coloured paper. The scene depicts dark-skinned laborers working in a cotton field. In the right-hand side of the foreground, a laborer holds a large wicker basket full of cotton on their head. To the left are two other large wicker baskets full of cotton. At least four other laborers recede into the depth of the field. They wear loose, baggy clothing and wide-brimmed hats. In the background is a wide, low brick factory building with smokestacks on the far left and one low, square tower with a flag in the middle. Below this scene is the insignia of the Dominion Crown and the text identifying the Imperial Cotton Co. 229. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Black ink on white paper. Thin black border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded black font. Below the letters is text in pseudo-gothic sentence-case font. Underneath that text is a small black circle with two lines extending from its left and right. Below is text in the previous pseudo-gothic font in a larger size. There are several images underneath the text. [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod by S. Harrod] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate image is surrounded by a border consisting of wide ribbons at the top and bottom wrapped around twisted rope on the left and right sides. The rope ends are knotted with three beaded and then frayed ends extending on each end of the rope. The top ribbon has printed, black, stylized gothic font in sentence case. Some text is separated by clusters of four diamonds. Inside the border is an image depicting a frigate with two masts and large sails billowing in the wind. Ribbons extend form the top of the sails. A smaller sail on a smaller mast is at the front of the ship. The ship is in an ocean with several waves. The bottom ribbon is more elaborated curling than the top ribbon. It has printed, black, stylized font in sentence case, but is smaller in size. Below the ribbon to the left and right is thin, sans-serif, capitalized font. 231. [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod by T. Z.] Black ink on white paper. Image has overall appearance of watercolour. There is text printed in sans serif capitalized black font in the top left and top right corners. The bookplate background is a multihued pale gray. The image depicts a street in Bruges. A stone church is in the background, with a tall, pointed tower. A lower part of the church is visible, with upper level balconies visible. The windows are decorated at the top with crosses. To the right of that part of the building is the roof of another building, also decorated with crosses at the uppermost part of the roof. A couple other towers are visible in the distance behind these buildings. At the forefront of the image is a dark bridge/archway. Through the archway are several trees in the church yard. The arch itself has a round decorative feature in the center. The left hand side of the arch is lighter, with two round stone towers extending up. The central part of the bridge/arch and the buildings on the right hand side are in shadow. The building on the right hand side is shorter and squarer, with a window by the top of the arch and a rounded door on the ground. There is shading in front of the archway that then lightens. In the lightened portion is printed capitalized, black text in serif font. In the bottom right corner are overlapping letters, a Z and a T. 232. [Bookplate for R. A. A. Jones] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an armoured arm extending straight out of a crest-wreath. The hand is clutching a spear with points on either end. Droplets are falling from the right spear point. The shield is black with a white chevron. The chevron has a thin white border along its top and bottom edges. The shield is charged with three white double-ended spears, the same style as that in the crest, two over one. The spears have a more elaborate top tip with a line down the middle, with the bottom tip being a simple, undecorated triangle shape. Below the shield, the motto is printed in black, capitalized, serif font. The ribbon has curling ends that split into two with rounds on each end. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, sentence case, black cursive font. 233. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on yellow paper. Ornate curlicue floral border. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters. The name of the institute is written in title case with gothic script. Separated by thin straight lines, the card number field is written in bold, stylized font. The lending rules are written in italicized serif font. 234. [Bookplate for Alton Goldbloom] Black and gold ink on cream paper. Art deco stylized capitalized font printed a top an image of a baby emerging from the torso up out of a gold, three-petal flower. Black stripes of alternating thick and thin width appear behind the baby. The vertical stem of the flower has a gold centre and two leaves, one on each side of the stem, that are half black and half gold. The stem expands in width at the base and capitalized font is written in the non-printed space at the black base. Black ink capitalized font is written below. 235. [Bookplate for Montreal & District Brotherhood Federation, W. Bourdeu, S James United Brotherhood, and T. B. Macaulay] Black ink on white paper. A border consisting of a thick black line with thinner black lines surrounds the bookplate. At the top of the bookplate, there is a circular decoration with a black border. Inside the border is a plain section with rounded edges on the outer rim. Inside that section is a thick black circle with text printed in capitalized, sans serif white font. A thin white border separates the thick black section from an image of a black and white globe with cross sections. In the middle of the globe, a circle shows two hands with black sleeves shaking. Above the hands is a sun with beams. Below the hands, letters are printed in capitalized, sans serif block letters with a black border. Underneath the circular design, font is printed in capitalized, serif, black, font. On the next line is a dotted line. Below the dotted line is the same font in a smaller size followed by another dotted line. The same font, but larger, is printed on the next line. In the next line the font is smaller and then larger and smaller again in the subsequent two lines. Below these lines, text is printed in bold, black, small sans serif font. Underneath this line, text is printed in small, sentence case, black, serif font and is followed by a dotted line. 236. [Bookplate for Alfred P. S. Dubord] A simple border surrounds the text. In the year “1856” the six is clearly written in black ink. A dashed line separates the first two lines of text from the last line of text. 237. [Bookplate for A. Renand and U.E. Archambault] Black ink on white paper. Border consists of two intertwined braided strands with elaborate corners. Decorative gothic font at the top of the bookplate is surrounded by lines with geometric accents. Smaller, sans serif, capitalized, black font is below surrounded by matching lines. There are three rows of dotted lines. Between the lines, smaller text is printed in serif, capitalized, black font. Underneath is italicized, black font in various sizes. At the bottom of the bookplate is larger, black, cursive font with small, italicized black font in the bottom right corner. 238. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Black ink on white paper. There is an almond shaped design with double lined black borders. The border contains capitalized black sans serif font. In the center are two shields. A white shield with an anchor partially covers a black shield. A bishop’s hat sits atop the shield. A motto is printed in the banner. Below more italicized text is printed with a dotted line.
