[Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 2. [Bookplate for Charles Philip Huntington by P. B. W.] The central image is a family armorial. The image begins with a horse head erased facing to the dexter. A rose sits on its throat and the head sits atop a wreath. The wreath sits atop a helm face open and centred signifying a baron. Below the helm is a shield and mantling sits to either side of the entire image. The shield has a small escutcheon placed in the dexter chief position and the escutcheon bears a gules left hand on a field of argent. Two roses sit on the main argent shield between a gules pile with a horse head erased. 3. [Bookplate for John Buckler] In black ink on thin paper, this bookplate consists of an erased sable (black) dragon with three bezants (or [gold] roundlets) and two barrulets, or, atop a straight wreath. Above the erased dragon is a banner containing the latin motto. 4. [Bookplate for Joseph Bewley] This non-traditional heraldic bookplate consists of a tilted argent (silver) escutcheon with a sable (black) chevron. On the escutcheon are three bird heads, erased, two over one. Atop the shield is an unusually large helmet in profile, topped by a twig with leaves, a crest wreath, and a stag head, erased. From the helmet flows mantling. Above and below the image are banners containing the text. The image and banners are set upon a designed background and framed by a double border. 5. [Bookplate for Fra. Love Beckford] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross, with an escutcheon of pretence. On the first escutcheon, the dexter chief and sinister base quarters are divided themselves per pale, with the dexter being gules (red) and the sinister azure (blue). The quarters contain an argent (silver) chevron, which itself contains three argent eagles, displayed. The quarters also contain three marlets, two over one. The sinister chief and dexter base quarters of the escutcheon are argent with three gules bars. Above the bars are three lion heads, erased. The escutcheon of pretence is divided by an embattled fess. The base is argent and the chief, which contains three bezant (gold roundlets), is sable (black). Atop the shield is a straight crest wreath and a heron's head, erased. In the mouth of the heron is a fish, hauriant. 6. [Bookplate for Charles A. Dashwood] This heraldic bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon, argent (silver), a fess, gules (red), the fess charged with three griffin heads, erased (a term which describes the cutted edge of an animal's head) ; two bars above and below the fess, also gules. Steel helmet, positioned three-quartered faced, closed (denotes an esquire rank). The crest above the helmet is a griffin head, again erased. A banner is positioned at the lower part of escutcheon with Latin motto. Surrounding the escutcheon is elaborate mantling. 7. [Bookplate for Hugh Lyle Smyth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing an invected bend, azure (blue). The escutcheon is charged with two unicorn heads, gules (red) and erased, at dexter base and sinister chief ; the bend is charged with three lozenges, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a dexter closed helmet, which is topped by a ducal coronet and a unicorn head, gules and erased, with lozenge, ermine. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 8. [Bookplate for Charles Perrin Smith] This bookplate consists of a very detailed coat of arms, which is divided per pale. The first half at dexter has fifteen quarterings, which are as follows: azure (blue) with a chevron argent (silver), charged with a crescent, between three cocks ; sable (black) charged with three griffin's heads erased ; sable and argent (silver) divided per fess with a lion rampant ; argent charged with a lion passant, between three fleur de lis, two over one ; gules and argent, divided quarterly, charged with four lions passant ; or (gold) charged with a lion gules rampant ; ermine (fur) charged with a lion sable rampant ; azure with a chevron argent, between three cocks ; gules with two lions passant, one above the other ; ermines and sable, divided per bend sinister, charged with a lion sable rampant ; argent, a bordure engrailed or charged with three Griffin's heads, erased gules ; argent and gules, divided per quarterly, quarters one and four argent, charged with three boars' heads and quarters two and th. 9. [Bookplate for James Bryce Allan] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per bend, dancetty. Bordure, azure [blue]. Above field, argent [white] and ermine, a stag, gules [red], erased, antlers, or [gold], and an annulet, or. Below field, gules, a crescent. Helm has mantling around a tilting helmet on top of which is a curved crest wreath with a dog, erased. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 10. [Bookplate for John A. Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Above the escutcheon sits a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet, gules (red), on a vizored helm with mantling. Escutcheon is divided per quarter. The quarterly field near dexter chief is argent (silver) with a lion rampant, gules, and near sinister chief, or (gold), is a dexter hand, erased, holding cross crosslet, gules. The quarterly field near the sinister base displays a fish naiant on water, vert (green), and near the dexter base, argent, is a lymphad in sable (black), azure (blue), and gules. 11. [Bookplate for James Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Above the escutcheon sits a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet, gules (red), on a straight wreath. The escutcheon is divided per quarter. The quarterly field near dexter chief is or (gold) with a lion rampant, gules and near sinister chief, or, is a dexter hand, erased, holding cross crosslet, gules. The quarterly field near the sinister base displays a fish naiant on water, vert (green), and near the dexter base, or, is a lymphad in sable (black) and gules. The motto is written on a scroll above the crest. 12. [Bookplate for Hugh John Macdonald] Black ink on white paper. Above the escutcheon on a straight wreath, sits a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet. Below the wreath a vizored helm with mantling appears. The escutcheon is divided per quarter. The quarterly field near dexter chief is argent (silver) with a lion rampant and near sinister chief, or (gold), is a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet, gules. The quarterly field near the sinister base displays a fish naiant on water, vert (green) and a lymphad in the dexter base, argent. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originator's Latin motto. 13. [Bookplate for John Caton Thompson] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield parted per pale, baron and femme, three coats ; first, or, a bordure, argent, a lion rampant ; second, parted per fess, sable, on a chevron argent, between three swans' heads, two over one, erased at the neck, ducally gorged, three pellet one over two ; in base (same as second) sable, on a chevron argent, between three swans' heads, two over one, erased at the neck, ducally gorged, three pellet one over two. Above a straight wreath, the crest of a lion rampant, ducally gorged. Below the shield, laurel sprigs. At the bottom of the ex libris appears the name 'John Caton Thompson.'. 14. [Bookplate for Arthur Lowndes] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate features an oval shape with a thin, pale black border. At the top of the bookplate is a rounded section with a base that goes down a point towards the middle of the bookplate. The image depicts a procession of men entering what appears to be a brick church. The man at the front of the procession is carrying a cross. There is foliage growing on the church exterior. The men are entering an arched doorway and there are windows above and to the right of the doorway. To the right of a procession is a small metal fence with a brick pillar, behind which is a tall, leafy tree. Other trees are silhouetted in black on the far horizon. The base of the image is decorated with leaves and flowers with many petals. Below, the background is a speckled grey wall and there are two crests, one of the left and one on the right. On the left, the crest features a tall leafy tree on a crest-wreath. To the right of the tree is an argent shield charged with three sable fleurs-de-lis, two over one. At the base of the tree trunk, a ribbon billows out to the right with text printed in capitalized, black, sans serif font. The shield is argent with a bend. The bend has a border of two thin sable lines and is charged with three argent leaves. Below the shield, the mottos is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. On the right, the crest features a sable erased dragon’s head floating above a crest-wreath. The shield is all argent with a lozengy field. There is an argent canton in the upper left corner of the shield charged with a smaller version of the sable erased dragon’s head from the crest. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. Below the crests is a large fireplace. The mantle is covered with books. There is a lamp on the left side of the mantle and a vase filled with plants on the right side of the mantle. Alongside the fireplace, books are stacked on shelves on the left and right-hand side. The mantle itself is decorated with simple vertical black lines. There is a simple iron grate in front of a roaring wood fire. On the left and right hand side of the fireplace itself are square shaped decorative features. There are also fireplace implements on either side of the fireplace. On the floor in front of the fire are a dog and cat. The dog is black and white and is lying down on the left side of the bookplate. The cat is also black and white and is sitting on the right side of the bookplate. Below the cat and dog, the bottom portion of the bookplate features a dense floral decoration. On top of the decoration is a banner with curling ends upon which the bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. 15. [Bookplate for Herbert Wilson Greene] Heraldic bookplate in black ink on white paper. At the top of the shield is mantling above which are an erased dragon on a wreathe. Below the dragon is a closed helmet in profile facing sinister. The per pale shield is or (sinister) and azure (dexter) with three trippant stags. Below the shield is the following motto: "Nescia Fallere Vita." 16. [Bookplate] Black ink on blue paper. Very narrow double border surrounds text. Appears that originator name has been erased. 17. [Bookplate for J. H. Ainsworth by T. E.] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The gules (red) dexter of the shield contains a small crescent at precise middle chief, and three battle axes argent (silver), two over one. The battle axe is an ancient military weapon, and placed on a shield represents a mark of prowess. The argent sinister of the shield contains a gules canton at dexter chief. The canton contains a talbot's head, erased. The sinister side of the shield also contains a chevron, ermines (a fur represented by white spots on a black field). Atop the escutcheon is the helm, grated and in profile. The helm is topped by a straight crest wreath and an armored figure holding a battle axe in his dexter hand. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 18. [Bookplate for William Hall Walker by F.] Dense with imagery, this bookplate consists of a central framed coat of arms, surrounded by many symbols and figures, including a rose, a portcullis, a bird, a small argent escutcheon charged with a lion rampant, a thistle, military insignia, mounted hunting spoils, an anchor, rifles, swords, polo mallets, horseracing emblems, horse carriage hook-up, foliage, tree branches, and knights on horseback. The knight on the left sits upon an armored sable horse, holds a lance in his right arm, and wears a cornucopia crested helmet. The knight on the right sits upon a unarmored white horse and holds a white flag in his right hand, on which is the image of a tree and fox on a circular white and azure (blue) background. The coat of arms, presented within a border of grape vines and under the motto 'By Care and Industry', consists of a white horse and stag as supporters, with juxtaposed garbe, proper. The escutcheon, argent, contains both a chief and saltier. The chief is argent (silver), with two argent mullets of six points and garbe, proper. The saltier, argent, is charged with eight seedlings eradicated and a stag's head, erased, at its centre. Atop the shield is a baron's coronet and helmet, grated and in profile, crested by a wreath and cornucopia. 19. [Bookplate for Nathaniel W. Conkling] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a stag's head, erased, atop a straight crest wreath. 20. [Bookplate for George J. Campbell] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon bearing the arms of the ancient Scottish family Campbell, presented as a Gyronny of eight, or (gold) and sable (black). The escutcheon is bordered in gules (red) with 7 escallopes. The escutcheon contains a canton, also Gyronny of eight, gules and ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). The crest, atop a curved wreath, is an eagles head, erased. Over the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto.
