[Bookplate for Joseph Edgar Guimont by Chalifour Ltée Journal “Le Nord”] Blue ink on cream paper. Capitalized, block, sans-serif letters are printed at the top of the bookplate. Below the text is gothic font in sentence case with a thin blue line framing it atop and below. In the center of the bookplate is an image of a right hand reaching out of a cloud to pour oil into an oil lamp with the flame burning. The lamp is elaborately decorated with floral and curlicue embellishments. The lamp sits atop a closed book with the spine facing out. The cloud extends behind the lamp and book as well. A thin blue line separates the image from sentence-case serif font and another thin blue line is below that text. Below the line is thin italicized font and a dotted line. At the bottom of the bookplate is a thin blue line directly above some smaller, sentence-case serif blue font. 82. [Bookplate for Library of Diocesan Theological College] Black ink on white paper. There is italicized black text with a dotted line at the top of the bookplate. There is an almond shaped design with double lined black borders. The border contains capitalized black sans serif font. In the center are two shields. A white shield with an anchor partially covers a black shield. A bishop’s hat sits atop the shield. A motto is printed in the banner. Below more italicized text is printed with a dotted line. There are several lines of stylized black gothic fond, one line of sans serif capitalized black font, and then one final line of italicized text with a dotted line. 83. [Bookplate for Marjory Todd and John Todd] In black ink on white paper, a border which includes images of a book, an hourglass, and a sundial surrounds a view of a garden which contains birds and a birdbath, flowers, and in the distance, trees and a trellis. 84. [Bookplate for Mark Rowe by H. N.] In black ink on thick paper, a wreath containing the words, 'EX LIBRIS,' is positioned at the top of an architectural structure housing an image of the inside of a library and a reader or librarian holding a book. At the bottom of the image there is an ornamental box containing the name Mark Rowe. 85. [Bookplate for Mark Rowe by J. P.] In brown ink on thick paper, a wreath containing the words, 'EX LIBRIS,' and two urns sit on top of a decorative box within which is another urn, fruit, floral swags, and a suspended book. At the bottom of the image is an ornamental box containing the name Mark Rowe. 86. [Bookplate for Mark Rowe by J. P.] In black ink on thick paper, an architectural image contains a view of an inner library or study, with a wreath encircling the words, 'EX LIBRIS,' at the apex and a box or plaque with the name, Mark Rowe, at the bottom. 88. [Bookplate for Mark Rowe by L.] In black ink on thick paper, a stylized architectural image contains a window which opens on a view of a library or study. 89. [Bookplate for Mark Rowe by W. J. B.] In brown ink on thick paper, the Latin motto sits above swags of maple leaves and flowers which surround a shield with the stylized initials, M.R., located in the centre of the bookplate. 90. [Bookplate for Maurie Barrett] Printed in black ink on white paper, with a peel and stick feature. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion standing on a wreath, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion holds aloft the maple leaf and looks out from his frame which is surrounded by more maple leaves in a double frame. The lion's position, with the dexter forepaw raised and head turned to face the viewer, is known as passant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 91. [Bookplate for Maurie Barrett] Printed in black ink on beige paper, with a glued back. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion atop a larger crown, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion stands firm with his rear right leg forward as if indicating an intent to pounce. This position, with all four paws on the ground and head turned to face the viewer, is known as statant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 92. [Bookplate for Mechanics' Institute of Moodyville] In black ink, a decorative border surrounds text printed in a variety of fonts and hand written notes. The paper is highly mottled, possibly the result of mold. 93. [Bookplate for National Gallery of Canada Library by Alfred H. Howard] Burgundy ink on cream paper. Three young boys respectively engaged in painting, drawing and sculpting are enclosed by a large circle, at the center of which lies an open book. The entire bookplate is surrounded by a multi-layered border. The artist's remarque is in the lower right hand corner of the border. 94. [Bookplate for P. Gagnon] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a beaver lying on a crest-wreath. There are maple leaf branches extending from both sides of the beaver. The beaver is surrounded by a half-circle border with the motto in black, capitalized sans-serif font written across the arc. The shield is divided per fess, with the top half being further divided per pale and the upper left hand portion is divided into three horizontal sections. The topmost left hand section is argent with sable dots charged with two fleurs-de-lis. The middle left hand section is argent with sable stripes charged with a lion passant. The bottom left hand section is argent with sable dots charged with three maple leaves connected at the stem. The upper right hand side is argent charged with two pieces of equipment, one atop the other, and a pair of scissors below. The equipment has a small curved bottom with two long, curving handles on top with a spike pointing through the lower end of the handles. Below the top half is a thin black banner with white capitalized sans-serif text. Below the banner is an image of a natural forest and coastal landscape with a ship with two tall masts in the water. On the coast, there are people, possible colonizers, interacting. A large cross has been erected on the coast on the right hand side of the image. The dexter supporter and sinister supporter are moose standing a curling ribbon with text in capitalized black sans-serif font. 95. [Bookplate for P. I. P. Sherburne by Elvey] This bookplate, in black ink, consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants, vert (green), are charged with an eagle, displayed. The second and third quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a lion, rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath, topped by a unicorn's head, horned and couped. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 96. [Bookplate for Rainald Knightley] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered. The first and fourth quadrants are ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and the second and third quadrants are paly, or (gold) and gules (red). At the precise middle chief is an inescutcheon, argent (silver), containing a sinister hand, gules. The gules hand, known as the hand of Ulster, symbolizes the hounour of a baronet. The crest is composed of a tilted dexter helmet, a curved wreath, and a stag head, dexter and couped. The escutcheon is supported by an eagle or falcon on each side. The escutcheon and its supporters are framed by a border with flowers. The entire image, including text, is placed within a larger circular border, azure (blue). 97. [Bookplate for Robert Butts by B. Cole] This elaborate chippendale bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. First, the dexter side, azure (blue) and charged with three etoile, two over one, and a chevron, or (gold) with three lozenges, gules (red). Second, the sinister side, azure, is charged with three talbots' heads two over one, erased, and a bar, or, with three cross pattee, argent (silver). The shield is crested by a curved wreath and a unicorn's head, muzzled. The escutcheon is surrounded by a mass of asymmetrical wave-like mantling and flora. 98. [Bookplate for Robert E. Harris by W.A. Ives] The bookplate features an ornate border surrounding a coat of arms, motto, and illustration of books and the lamp of knowledge. The coat of arms features three silver crescents on a sable field. The shield is topped with a helmet and eagle with wings spread. The ribbon below contains the motto. The artist’s name appears under the books. 99. [Bookplate for Robert Hall and William Phillips Barrett by William Phillips Barrett] Printed in black ink on cream colored paper. The interior of a private library or study room is depicted. The right-hand side of the room is lined with a wall of books, which is topped with several carved busts. In the centre of the room, a large reading table holds several books and is surrounded by three chairs – an upholstered armchair on the left and two wooden chairs on the right. The books are heavy, bound manuscripts and one is open to display an illuminated frontispiece. In the background, a large bay window looks to a building with a spire that is surrounded by shrubbery. 100. [Bookplate for Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an academic escutcheon in the heraldic-style. The escutcheon is parted per fess, indented, in chief gules (red), charged with two open books with initialled text. These charges mimic the two books found on the University of Toronto's crest. On the fess, argent (silver), appears a maple bough with three leaves. Though situated differently, this symbol may be drawn from the maple bough with three leaves which appears on the coat of arms of the province of Ontario. The base, azure (blue), is charged with a lamp of knowledge. Above the escutcheon is a crown, which resembles that of George IV, also found on the coat of arms of the University. The crown was included in the University crest to indicate the provision of the institution's royal charter by George IV in 1827. Surrounding the escutcheon is a banner containing the name of the university faculty which issued the bookplate. The illustration identifies itself as an "Ex Libris" and below, cites the originating library.
