[Bookplate for Congregational College of Canada] There is an elaborate border with geometric designs and stylized flowers, and within this at the top of the bookplate is the crest of the Congregational College of British North America. Under the crest, the words 'Library of the Congregational College of Canada' are written in several different fonts, with the words 'Congregational College' the largest and most prominent. Underneath this is a space for information to be entered, although it has been left blank. 82. [Bookplate for Congregational College of British North America] The bookplate has a geometric border with stylized flowers on the corners. Within the border, the text 'Congregational College' is in a Gothic typeface, and the words 'of British North America' are in a simple sans-serif. 83. [Bookplate for Congregational Theological Institute] The border has a border of lines with a more elaborate border 'wrapped' around it. The corners are adorned with small flowers. Within the border, the word 'Canadian' is in a bold font, and 'Congregational Theological' is in Gothic typeface. 84. [Bookplate for Congregational College of British North America] The bookplate has a stylized border of geometric patterns. Within the border, the words 'Congregational College' are written in Gothic typeface, with 'of British North America' written in a plainer font. 85. [Bookplate for Durham Mechanics’ Institute Library] Black in on cream paper. A four-lined border frame with black iron crosses in each of the four corners. Within this border is the printed name of the library, followed by a curlicue. Beneath this sits a number line with a blank line. In blue ink, a number and letter are written. 86. [Bookplate for William Greening and Cornelia Greening by A. N. Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Elaborately decorated frame surrounds three round images, two small ones atop a larger, oval one. The border has a shelf-like appearance with the top featuring a series of curling, heart-shaped decorations with a large, spiraling curlicue extending to the left and right. The very centre of the top element features a leaf-like decoration pointing upwards. The top half of the sides of the border features symmetrical leafy curlicue decorations that extend downwards with a pseudo-fleurs-de-lis to a line of elaborate floral decorations. The large oval image extends to the sides of the borders and below the oval are decorations on both the left and right sides. The left side features a tennis racket entwined in leafy decoration. The right side contains golf clubs in the same leafy decoration. Leafy decoration also surround the two small images inside the border, which are connected by two wrapping ribbons in the centre. The image on the left features an explorer holding a walking stick and wearing a hat looking out onto a nature landscape. The landscape includes water and a mountain topped with clouds. The image on the right contains a road curving to the right. The right side of the road features foliage, including several palm trees. The large, central image shows a house with some of its garden in the foreground. The forefront of the image is a simple lawn, followed by several small trees on the left with plants in barrels, a table, and several chairs on the right. Between the trees and chairs is a path leading further into the garden and towards the house. The house is quite large and has at least two stories and a sheltered porch. Towards the other end of the house and garden are taller trees. Below the images is a rectangular box with a border. The border consists of two thin white lines with a darker centre between them. The centre of the rectangle contains text written in capitalized serif font in varying sizes. Below the rectangle, the artist’s name and date of creation is written in small, sentence-case serif font. Handwritten note in pencil on the back. 87. [Bookplate for Robert Hall and William Phillips Barrett by William Phillips Barrett] Printed in black ink on cream colored paper. The interior of a private library or study room is depicted. The right-hand side of the room is lined with a wall of books, which is topped with several carved busts. In the centre of the room, a large reading table holds several books and is surrounded by three chairs – an upholstered armchair on the left and two wooden chairs on the right. The books are heavy, bound manuscripts and one is open to display an illuminated frontispiece. In the background, a large bay window looks to a building with a spire that is surrounded by shrubbery. 88. [Bookplate for Harry E. Jones] Shiny texturized black ink is raised off the white paper. An elaborate border surrounds the central image. The border has two thin black lines on the outside and then has a series of repeating leafy floral shapes. The floral design is quite pointed and recurs in square sections all around the border. At each corner the design points out towards the corner. The inside of the border is surrounded by a thick black line. At the top of the border, an unfurled banner that is wider than the border sites atop of it. Text is printed in capitalized, block serif font. Below the ribbon, within the borders, is a picture of two monks looking at a large book with text and illustrations. One monk is standing in shadow, his back illuminated by the sunlight streaming in from a window outside the frame on the right side of the bookplate. At the forefront is a seated monk, also with his back to the sun, who is holding the book open while the other monk points at a section. The monk is sitting in a wooden chair with small cutout designs on the back. The table is also wooden and is covered with other books and a feather quill in an inkwell. In front of the desk, a large book with a decorative cover rests against the table leg. To the left of the book is a plain vase. At the base of the image, atop the lower portion of the border, is another ribbon featuring text printed in black, sentence case, serif font. 89. [Bookplate for John Hamilton by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on cream paper. One motto is printed on a ribbon with ends that extend to two points at the top of the bookplate. Motto is printed in capitalized, serif block letters. Below that motto is a crest featuring a leafy tree growing out of a crown. The crown’s points are rounded and leafy. The base of the crown is decorated with horizontal diamonds. The tree trunk grows through a picture frame with a saw attached to the center. The free is growing through this frame/saw object and has extensive, dense foliage. The entire crest sits atop a twisted wreath. The shield has extended points to the top left and right and the bottom curls to a point. The shield is sable and argent, divided per quarterly. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with three white flowers, two over one. The flowers have distinct round centers and five individual, separate petals. The top right and bottom left section are argent and charged with a Viking-style ship with three oars, a flag pointing to the left at the front and rear of the ship, and a tall mast. The sail is rolled up on the mast in a horizontal line. Four lines extend from the sail down to the ship. There is a flag at the top of the mast, with two lines extending down to the sail. Curlicue mantling decorates the shield from the base upwards. A second motto is printed on a ribbon with two pointed ends at the base of the shield. The text is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. The name of the bookplate owner is printed below this motto in thin, sentence case, cursive font. In the bottom right corner the name of the bookplate creator is printed in small, italicized, sentence case black font. 90. [Bookplate for James Lee] Brown and red ink on cream paper. A thick brown border surrounds the bookplate. Inside is a thin red border. Underneath the top of the red border are two leaves printed on the left and right side of block, capitalized, serif text. At the base of the red border, text is printed in the same block letters in a slightly larger size. There is a second thin red border within the first one, inside of the block text. Inside this border is the image of a man sitting indoors reading a book. The man has long hair tied with a bow in the back and is wearing a long dark coat and large pants cropped at the knee. He also has simple shoes with bows on his feet. He is sitting in a large wooden chair and smoking a pipe. Behind him to the right is a window with diamond patterns. To the left of the window is a small frame with little detail. The man and his chair are in profile. In front of them, half a round table is visible. A small vase and a thin glass are atop the table. At the man’s feet, a small black cat lies curled atop a closed book. 91. [Bookplate by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper, depicting a satyr playing reed pipes in a field with some flowers, surrounded by wildlife (moose, rabbit, squirrel, beaver, birds). There is a forest and water nearby, and signs of human life (tent, canoe).
