[Bookplate for David Stewart Erskine] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered per cross, and contains an inescutcheon. The first quarter, azure (blue), contains three garbe, two over one. The second quarter is itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, azure with an or (gold) riband and six cross crosslets fitchy sable (black) ; the second and third quarters are argent (silver), with a pale, sable. The third quarter of the escutcheon is also itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, or, with a fess in checky (alternate squares of metal and fur), argent and azure ; the second and third quarters are azure, containing three garbe, two over one. The fourth quarter, argent, with six bars, gemelles (doubles), contains a lion rampant, sable and proper. The inescutcheon, gules (red) contains an eagle, displayed and proper, and a ray of sun issuing out of the dexter corner. Atop the escutcheon is the coronet of an earl, topped by a grated helmet (peer), dexter. Upon the helmet is a curved crest wreath and a dexter cubit arm holding a club. From either side of the crest flows elaborate mantling. The escutcheon is accompanied by two supporters. The dexter supporter is an ostrich, while the sinister supporter is a griffin. Below the escutcheon and the supporters is a banner containing the English motto. 2. [Bookplate] The text of the bookplate is surrounded by an elaborate border decorated with various religious figures and themes. Angels kneel on either side of the upper corners and face inwards towards a man holding a book and looking outwards from an arch. The sides are decorated with ornate columns, at the bottom of which are crosses and a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Both the top and bottom portions of the border are decorated with stylized curls. The word 'Catholic' is printed in a bold font, and 'Circulating Library' is in a curly stylized Gothic font. The rules of the library are divided from the rest of the text by bars at the top and bottom, and there is a hand symbol pointing to the library's hours of operation at the bottom of the bookplate. The price of the library subscription is given in shillings, dating this to the era of the Canadian pound which was in use until currency decimalization came into force in 1858. 3. [Bookplate] A stylized floral border surrounds the text, which is written in several different fonts and is found in the middle of the bookplate. The word 'Catholic' is written in a curly font with the words 'Circulating Library' printed in Gothic below. The book number is printed underneath, and there is a line dividing the upper part of the text from the middle, which lists the library rules. Below the library rules is another line, and below this is a hand symbol which points to further information on the library hours. The cost of subscription is given in cents, dating this bookplate after 1858, the year in which currency decimalization came into force in Canada. 4. [Bookplate] Five lines of text enclosed within a double border of one thick and one thin line. The words 'Cote St. Antoine' are written in a slightly curled font, and the words 'Methodist S.S. Library' are in bold. There is a space for the number of the book to be written in by hand. The bookplate also includes the terms of borrowing. 5. [Bookplate for Arthur Lowndes] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate features an oval shape with a thin, pale black border. At the top of the bookplate is a rounded section with a base that goes down a point towards the middle of the bookplate. The image depicts a procession of men entering what appears to be a brick church. The man at the front of the procession is carrying a cross. There is foliage growing on the church exterior. The men are entering an arched doorway and there are windows above and to the right of the doorway. To the right of a procession is a small metal fence with a brick pillar, behind which is a tall, leafy tree. Other trees are silhouetted in black on the far horizon. The base of the image is decorated with leaves and flowers with many petals. Below, the background is a speckled grey wall and there are two crests, one of the left and one on the right. On the left, the crest features a tall leafy tree on a crest-wreath. To the right of the tree is an argent shield charged with three sable fleurs-de-lis, two over one. At the base of the tree trunk, a ribbon billows out to the right with text printed in capitalized, black, sans serif font. The shield is argent with a bend. The bend has a border of two thin sable lines and is charged with three argent leaves. Below the shield, the mottos is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. On the right, the crest features a sable erased dragon’s head floating above a crest-wreath. The shield is all argent with a lozengy field. There is an argent canton in the upper left corner of the shield charged with a smaller version of the sable erased dragon’s head from the crest. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. Below the crests is a large fireplace. The mantle is covered with books. There is a lamp on the left side of the mantle and a vase filled with plants on the right side of the mantle. Alongside the fireplace, books are stacked on shelves on the left and right-hand side. The mantle itself is decorated with simple vertical black lines. There is a simple iron grate in front of a roaring wood fire. On the left and right hand side of the fireplace itself are square shaped decorative features. There are also fireplace implements on either side of the fireplace. On the floor in front of the fire are a dog and cat. The dog is black and white and is lying down on the left side of the bookplate. The cat is also black and white and is sitting on the right side of the bookplate. Below the cat and dog, the bottom portion of the bookplate features a dense floral decoration. On top of the decoration is a banner with curling ends upon which the bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. 6. [Bookplate for Coddington] The bookplate is an armorial bookplate that begins with the image of a lion's head facing to the dexter covered in a fretty pattern. At the base of the head is a trefoil leaf. The head is mounted above a wreath which is itself mounted above a shield. The shield is an argent shield upon which is mounted an argent fretty. In both the dexter chief and sinister base positions are square ermine insets upon which are mounted trefoil leaves. In the sinister chief and dexter base positions are square insets upon which are mounted lion heads facing dexter. 7. [Bookplate for Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire] Purple ink on white paper. Seal of IODE at top. Text below. Border consists of three fine lines at top and bottom and a single fine line at the sides. 8. [Bookplate for Dr. Somogyi Ödön and J. E. Horvath by B. J.] This art nouveau bookplate is in black and green ink, on ivory paper. It depicts a possible intruder clothed in black creeping around a green curtain from the left side. His eyes look towards a bookcase filled with books of varying sizes, which itself is partly covered with a curtain. On the right side of the image, with his back to the bookcase, is a white clothed figure holding an automatic pistol. 9. [Bookplate for Erich Falfenroth and Michael B. Kunze by F. Nickel] In brown ink, a sun radiates light over the background of the image from the top left corner. Included in the background is a crescent moon in the top right corner, an hourglass, in the lower left corner, and a compass in the lower right corner. In the foreground is a chaplet encircling a coat of arms. Atop the helm is a bird, possibly a falcon. The helm itself is front facing and grated (no significance in German heraldry). From either side of the helmet flow elaborate sprawls of mantling which curl down to the sides of the escucheon. The escucheon, in gules, (red) represented by lines drawn from chief to the base, is bordered in or (gold). Centered in the shield is a heavily bound book, with what appear to be latches to prevent unworthy eyes from reading its contents. From the top and bottom of the book flow a place marking ribbon. 10. [Bookplate for Rob. S. Atcheson] In black ink, this bookplate contains a rooster atop a horn, which is itself atop a straight wreath. The rooster is a common heraldic symbol that stands for vigilence. Above the rooster is a banner containing the latin motto. 11. [Bookplate for Fra. Love Beckford] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross, with an escutcheon of pretence. On the first escutcheon, the dexter chief and sinister base quarters are divided themselves per pale, with the dexter being gules (red) and the sinister azure (blue). The quarters contain an argent (silver) chevron, which itself contains three argent eagles, displayed. The quarters also contain three marlets, two over one. The sinister chief and dexter base quarters of the escutcheon are argent with three gules bars. Above the bars are three lion heads, erased. The escutcheon of pretence is divided by an embattled fess. The base is argent and the chief, which contains three bezant (gold roundlets), is sable (black). Atop the shield is a straight crest wreath and a heron's head, erased. In the mouth of the heron is a fish, hauriant. 12. [Bookplate for Charles Bathurst] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter side, sable (black), contains two bars, ermine (design representing white powdered fur with black tufts). At the centre of the top bar there is a crescent, or (gold), within a mullet, gules (red). On the top third of the sable background are three cross formy, or. The sinister side is itself divided per pale, ermine and ermines (design representing black fur powdered with argent [silver]). It contains three fleurs-de-lis all counter-changed, two over one, and contains a chevron charged with five lozenges, ermine and ermines all counter-changed. Atop the shield, but not resting on it, is a straight crest wreath and an arm embowed, with fist clenched holding a spiked club. The arm is charged with a crescent, or , within a mullet, gules. 13. [Bookplate for George Herbert Wailes] This bookplate consists of a combination of heraldic and pictorial elements. At the centre, is an ovular frame containing an image of a nude woman in a crouching position, and holding a flower pot in her open hands. From the pot, stands a single flower. Above the frame is a small escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a crane. The crest is a dexter helm, itself topped by a straight wreath, and a horseman's spur and strap, accompanied on either side by a pair of wings erect. Behind the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 14. [Bookplate] In black ink. The escutcheon, argent (silver), is charged with a mullet, pierced, azure (blue), at the fess point, surrounded by three cross crosslets, fitched, gules (red), two over one. The shield itself is constructed from rococo scrolls and is surrounded by elaborate vegetative mantling, finishing in a pair of tassels. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, charged with a straight wreath, and a cubit arm, clutching a cross crosslet fitchy. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originators Latin motto. 15. [Bookplate for Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an academic escutcheon in the heraldic-style. The escutcheon is parted per fess, indented, in chief gules (red), charged with two open books with initialled text. These charges mimic the two books found on the University of Toronto's crest. On the fess, argent (silver), appears a maple bough with three leaves. Though situated differently, this symbol may be drawn from the maple bough with three leaves which appears on the coat of arms of the province of Ontario. The base, azure (blue), is charged with a lamp of knowledge. Above the escutcheon is a crown, which resembles that of George IV, also found on the coat of arms of the University. The crown was included in the University crest to indicate the provision of the institution's royal charter by George IV in 1827. Surrounding the escutcheon is a banner containing the name of the university faculty which issued the bookplate. The illustration identifies itself as an "Ex Libris" and below, cites the originating library. The text and illustration are surrounded by a rectangular frame ornamented with garlands. 16. [Bookplate for McIntosh Art Gallery by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream paper. White ivy border over stippled black background. Names of John Gordon McIntosh and Wilhelmina Morris McIntosh inscribed on facing pages of book, behind which is a lit torch whose rays span out from the center of the plate. The text of the plate is on a scroll which is woven around a lyre, a symbol of harmony. 17. [Bookplate for William Kerrigan] In dark brown ink. This bookplate's design features a heavily patterned book with a scroll and feather pen in the centre, and a separate compartment below displaying the originator's name. These designs are surrounded by a rectangular frame of acorn-laden, oak branches. The book itself is depicted from an odd perspective. 18. [Bookplate for Marcus Brown Westhead] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield quartered. First and fourth quarter, argent, two barrulets dancette sable, between three Saracens' heads couped at the shoulders proper, wreathed round the temples, of the first and second. Second and third quarter, azure, on a fesse argent, between three martlets in chief, and the Roman fasces erect surmounting two swords in saltire, and encircled by a chaplet in base or, three chess-rooks sable. Center inescutcheon, party per chevron or and azure, in chief a mullet of six points lies between two crosses pattée of the last, and in base the front elevation of a chapel argent, the whole being charged with a crescent for difference. First crest, on a wreath of the colors, within a fetterlock or, a Saracen's head couped proper, wreathed round the temples argent and sable. Second crest, on a wreath of the colours, a demi-eagle displayed with two heads azure, charged on the breast with the fasces, swords, and chaplet, as in the arms. The escutcheon is surrounded by mantling and below a banner bears the motto 'ORA ET LABORA.'. 19. [Bookseller's Ticket for Battle Bros.] Resembling a postage stamp, text and a decorative border in black ink on white paper. 20. [Bookplate for Baron de Hirsch Institute and Hebrew Benevolent Society] All printed markings in blue ink, all manuscript notes in black ink. Thin lines form a vertical rectangle with three vertically-stacked cells. The top cell contains the name of the library. The middle cell contains the seal of the institute: two concentric rings with the name and dates of the institute surrounding the inner circle, which contains a Star of David surrounding some Hebrew text. The seal has been inverted, so that it appears as white markings in a blue square. The bottom cell contains a space for presentation notes.
