[Bookplate for Laurence A. Waldron by Waller] In red ink. This bookplate displays a classical theme. A neoclassical urn, draped with a laurel garland serves as the back-drop for the escutcheon. The escutcheon, argent (silver), is charged with three bull's heads caboshed, situated two over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger sejant. This component is encircled by the originator's Latin motto. The urn is set upon a pedestal with an oval background, framed by a garland. At the base, between the oval background and laurel garland frame, appears the name and location of the creator. 2. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. This bookplate appears to be a smaller version of BP MUR SL P H475b, but the creator's initials are barely visible amongst the mantling. 3. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. The bookplate designer's initials and the date of creation are hidden among the mantling. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. A smaller version of this bookplate may also be viewed at BP MUR SL P H475a. 4. [Bookplate for Francis Marion Smith by Warren Stannard] The "crest" is the profile of a blacksmith from the waist up holding with outstretched arms a hammer and tongs is before an anvil. Below the blacksmith is the text Ex Libris on a ribbon. A laurel wreath acts as supporters for the shield. On the shield, a printing press appears on the dexter side ; a cube with human faces and bold letters appears on the sinister chief ; and an anatomical human heart appears on the middle base. At the base of the shield, and behind it, a burst appears. 5. [Bookplate for Claude Ernest Dolman] Laurel frames a compound optical microscope. Bookplate is on its original adhesive backing. 6. [Bookplate for Eliab Harvey] In black ink, an oval escutcheon, or (gold), with a dancette chief, sable (black), containing three crescents, argent (silver). The crest is a dexter hand couped at the wrist and erected, floating above is an inverted crescent, argent. The Latin motto is found encircling the escutcheon on the bordure, argent. A wreath made of two laurel branches encapsulates the escutcheon. A banner, containing the German motto, is wrapped around the base of the wreath with the Badge of a Companion of the Order of the Bath hanging between it. 7. [Bookplate for McLean] In black ink, though somewhat faded, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, with a gules (red) bordure ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with two eagles heads addorsed, gules and erased above a mountain ; the second quadrant, argent, is charged with a dexter arm, gules, holding a cross crosslet fitchy, azure (blue) ; and the third quadrant, argent, is charged with a galley, sable (black), over a fish, azure and naiant (swimming fesswise). The escutcheon is crested by a dexter helmet, open and containing a lion head, topped by a curved wreath and two laurel branches, crossed. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 8. [Bookplate] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon tilted from a central vertical axis. The escutcheon is gules (red), charged with an ornate vegetative design, vert (green), and a chief, or (gold), are three cross-crosslets fitchy, gules. Above the escutcheon is a collar, wrapped with a pair of stirrups and set upon a backdrop of two intersecting laurel garlands. The garlands form an 'x' pattern wrapping around the escutcheon and the charges above it, partially framing them. The collar is charged with a straight wreath, which in turn, is charged with a courtly-styled woman, clutching two stag antlers. Below the escutcheon is a manner displaying the originators Latin motto. 9. [Bookplate for James Stevenson by H. Wilson] A Latin phrase is written on a banner at the top of the plate. Beneath it is a hand ascending from a heraldic silk wreath, holding a crown of leaves. While illustrated in a pictorial style, the image is reminiscent of the heraldic image of a dexter hand couped at the wrist, holding a crown of laurel or bay leaves. 10. [Bookplate for John Caton Thompson] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield parted per pale, baron and femme, three coats ; first, or, a bordure, argent, a lion rampant ; second, parted per fess, sable, on a chevron argent, between three swans' heads, two over one, erased at the neck, ducally gorged, three pellet one over two ; in base (same as second) sable, on a chevron argent, between three swans' heads, two over one, erased at the neck, ducally gorged, three pellet one over two. Above a straight wreath, the crest of a lion rampant, ducally gorged. Below the shield, laurel sprigs. At the bottom of the ex libris appears the name 'John Caton Thompson.'. 11. [Bookseller's Tickets for Charles-Odilon Beauchemin] 1) In orange ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of an orange and white border surrounding white text on an orange field. 2) In red-orange ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a red-orange and white border surrounding white text on a red-orange field. 3) In black ink on green paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black link border surrounding black text. 4) In black ink on green paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black decorative border surrounding black text. 5) In black ink on yellow paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black border in the likeness of an open book surrounding black text on the open spread of the book. 6) In black ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black decorative border with maple leaves in the four corners, surrounding an oval border containing the booksellers' name, surrounding the booksellers' address on an illustration of a scroll at the center. 7) The gold metallic, embossed booksellers' ticket consists of a maple leaf surrounded by laurel branches at the center of the ticket. Text and an outer border surround the center image. 12. [Bookplate for Ruth Goodell by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on yellow paper. The scene is framed by an architectural arch with a column on each side, decorated with stylized vines and leaves. At the top left- and right-hand corners, initials are separated by a banner in the centre. The background features a mountain with a silhouette of a tree (possibly a laurel) on the left-hand side. The foreground depicts an ancient Greek amphora (vase with handles) with a frieze of figures and decorative patterns. To the left is an open book with a scroll above it identifying the artist and date of the bookplate. To the right of the vase is a globe showing a stylized representation of North and South America. Other closed books surround these objects. 13. [Bookplate for Jos-N. Chaussé M.D.] Black ink on cream paper. An oval border with decoration at the top and bottom surrounds an illustration of a naked female figure whose arms are turning into tree branches, referencing Daphne of Greek mythology. The women’s tree branch arms extend beyond the oval border. She is looking to her left with a laurel crown on other head tied with ribbons while her long black hair flows past her right shoulder. A long, curling ribbon wraps around her back upper body, across her torso, and then back around her legs. Text is printed on the ribbon in bold, black, capitalized, serif font. The woman stands with her ankles crossed and is wearing strappy open-toe flat shoes. She stands in front of an open book. In the top left corner of the left page are initials printed in capitalized, stylized, block font. The woman also stands atop of a closed book, with its pages facing the viewer.
