[Bookplate for Harry E. Jones] Shiny texturized black ink is raised off the white paper. An elaborate border surrounds the central image. The border has two thin black lines on the outside and then has a series of repeating leafy floral shapes. The floral design is quite pointed and recurs in square sections all around the border. At each corner the design points out towards the corner. The inside of the border is surrounded by a thick black line. At the top of the border, an unfurled banner that is wider than the border sites atop of it. Text is printed in capitalized, block serif font. Below the ribbon, within the borders, is a picture of two monks looking at a large book with text and illustrations. One monk is standing in shadow, his back illuminated by the sunlight streaming in from a window outside the frame on the right side of the bookplate. At the forefront is a seated monk, also with his back to the sun, who is holding the book open while the other monk points at a section. The monk is sitting in a wooden chair with small cutout designs on the back. The table is also wooden and is covered with other books and a feather quill in an inkwell. In front of the desk, a large book with a decorative cover rests against the table leg. To the left of the book is a plain vase. At the base of the image, atop the lower portion of the border, is another ribbon featuring text printed in black, sentence case, serif font. 102. [Bookplate for Hôpital Général d’Ottawa No. 6] Stamped in black ink on textured, yellowed paper. In the centre, a white cross is depicted on top of a mound of earth. At the centre of the cross, the Catholic icon of the Sacred Heart is depicted: a heart with a flame above it. From the earth, a vine of ivy grows and weaves around the cross. This image is framed by two banners above and below, which bear two phrases in French: “J’ÉTAIS MALADE ET VOUS M’AVEZ VISITE / JE SUIS L’ APPUI DU FAIBLE.” This is enclosed within a circle, which is framed by another circle with a scalloped edge that contains the identification: “SOEURS GRISES DE LA CROIX / OTTAWA.” The entire image is framed with a single black-line border of a wavy line with simple scrolled decorative marks at all four corners. 103. [Bookplate for Union des Commis-Marchands] Text is printed in a numbered list, surrounded by a line border resembling chain. 104. [Bookplate for Robert E. Harris by W.A. Ives] The bookplate features an ornate border surrounding a coat of arms, motto, and illustration of books and the lamp of knowledge. The coat of arms features three silver crescents on a sable field. The shield is topped with a helmet and eagle with wings spread. The ribbon below contains the motto. The artist’s name appears under the books. 105. [Bookplate] The bookplate is printed in navy blue ink. The name, address, telephone number and hours are printed at the top. Underneath this block of text is a line, and the remainder of the bookplate is split into two halves. The headings 'terms' 'time limit' 'renewal notice' and 'care' are printed on the left-hand side of the split, and the corresponding information is printed on the right-hand side. Underneath this block is a line, the words 'Please protect your book in wet weather' and another solid line. 106. [Bookplate for Castle Lending Library] The name of the lending library is in large bold letters at the top of the bookplate, and underneath is listed the address, hours, and telephone number. Underneath this text block there is a thick black line, and a listing of the terms, time limit and renewal conditions. Underneath this is a single black line, the words 'Please Protect Your Book in Wet Weather' and another single black line. At the bottom of the bookplate is space for the library to stamp a return date. 107. [Bookplate for W. I. Marble] The text is surrounded with a simple border. 108. [Bookplate for Carnegie Library of Ottawa] There are two solid, black line borders around the text. The bookplate is printed in black ink, and the words 'Carnegie Library of Ottawa' are printed in red ink in a Gothic script. Two thin black lines separate the words 'Carnegie Library of Ottawa' from the 'library rules' text. 109. [Bookplate for Bateman by Orlando Jewitt] This bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon, on which are three etoile topped crescents, two over one. There is also an additional smaller crescent located at the precise middle chief of the escutcheon. According to heraldic symbolism, the crescent represents the second son. On top of the shield is a helmet in profile, beaver open. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath and another etoile topped crescent. The crest also includes a vol (set of wings), erect, and mantling which pours down the sides of the shield. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. The image and text are framed by a thin single line border. 110. [Bookplate by M. Trinque] This bookplate includes both a pictorial image and a heraldic symbol. The image, in black ink, depicts three soldiers in the process of laying communications cable. One soldier holds the spool of cable, another cuts the cable with pliers, and the third soldier keeps a look-out, rifle on back. The heraldic symbol, in coloured ink, contains an escutcheon divided per fess by an engrailed line. The top half is a dark shade of azure, while the bottom half is a light shade of azure. The escutcheon includes a sinister bend of blue, white, and red, representing the French flag. From the dexter chief to the sinister base are three fleur-de-lis. On the top of the shield is a torch, possibly representing Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa during World War II. On both the right and left sides of the shield are signal flags, providing more indication that this coat of arms belongs to a communications unit. The left flag is a small red square within a larger white square, and the right flag is the reverse. At the base of the shield is a ribbon containing four stars. Below the image, there is space for entering a name of ownership, but it has been left blank. 111. [Bookplates for Bell Telephone Company of Canada] This bookplate is in two parts ' one to show who made the presentation, the other to show ownership by the library. Part 1 (upper): This bookplate is composed of black text, with a dotted line at the bottom on which to record the name of the presenter. Part 2 (lower): This bookplate is composed of black text, with a small form number in the upper right, the major text with parts bolded, and a grid below that for recording due dates. Both of these pieces have an unused full glue coating on the back. 112. [Bookplate for Edward Steane] This bookplate, in black ink, consists of a straight crest wreath, on top of which is a rock and eagle, wings addorsed and elevated. Below the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. The image is bordered by a single line frame. 113. [Bookplate for Hope Holmested by Thoreau MacDonald] This bookplate's design features a rising/setting sun on the horizon line of a body of water. Hovering above the water is an angel with hands in prayer, surrounded by several pairs of feathered wings. Stars appear in the heavens above and a fully risen sun or holy light glows from behind the angel's wings. 114. [Bookplate for Alexandri Barbaro] This elaborately decorated bookplate consists of an argent (silver) escutcheon with a gules (red) annulet at the fess point, or centre. The annulet is often the mark of the fifth son. Atop the shield is a diadem or ducal coronet. On either side of the shield are flags and branches, and on the right is a horn. The bookplate is double-framed, first on the interior with a rectangular chaplet, and then on the exterior edge with a double line. 115. [Bookplate for Dunbar of Westfield by C. Norton] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross, the upper half gules (red) and or (gold), the lower half or and gules. Each quarter consists of a border ; quarter 1 and 4 are bordered with argent (silver) and heraldic roses, and charged with a lion rampant. Quarters 2 and 3 have a narrow border decorated by trefoil, charged with three round figures apiece. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant at dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a steel helmet, placed three-quartered (indicating esquire status). Above the helmet is a crest of a dexter arm proper (bare) upon a wreath. From the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Above the crest are two crowns with the Latin motto above. Below the escutcheon and supporters is a banner with an additonal Latin motto within. 116. [Bookplate for Cosmo Nevill] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross. Quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with a saltier, ermine (fur, white powdered with black tufts). Quarters two and three are argent (silver), with a fretty of eight pieces, gules. Quarters two and three have a canton at dexter chief, divided per pale, or (gold) and argent, charged with a galley with three masts. Above the primary escutcheon is a grated helmet at three-quarters profile (denoting a degree of peerage under a duke). Above the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a ducal coronet around an ox head, erased and ermine. Radiating from the helmet and escutcheon is elaborate mantling. Beneath the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 117. [Bookplate] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross. Quarters one and four are sable (black), charged with a dove holding an olive branch upon a mountain. Quarters two and three are or (gold). Supporting the escutcheon are two lions, positioned rampant queue-fourche. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, dexter, with grate closed, indicating a peer status. Upon the helmet, is a crown with another dove holding an olive branch, along with mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 118. [Bookplate for Lord Francis Gray by Daniel Lizars and William Home] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with a lion rampant, with an engrailed bordure, argent (silver). The shield is supported by a lion rampant guardant on each site. Above the shield is a crown denoting baron status, and directly above the crown is a crest of an anchor upon a straight wreath. Immediately below the shield is another crest, a swan, also upon a straight wreath. Extending out from the bottom of the shield are two banners, with bookplate test within. The bookplate is bordered by an elaborate leaf design. 119. [Bookplate] This royal bookplate, in black ink, contains two shields surrounded by a border of floral branches and elaborately twisting rope. The dexter shield represents the Arms of the ducs de Berry (after 1376). This shield, azure (blue), with an embattled bordure, gules (red) is charged with three fleurs-de-lis, two over one. The sinister shield represents the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Above the two shields is a royal crown adorned with fleur-de-lis. 120.
