[Bookplate for Elmwood Book Club] Black ink on cream paper. A double-lined border houses the title, address, borrowing policy, and hours of the book club. Between each section is a short, horizontal dividing line with a square angled like a diamond in the centre. Within the borrowing policy portion, a monetary amount has been hand-written in pencil. 42. [Bookplate for Erskine Church Sabbath School] Black ink on cream paper. A slim double-lined border houses the title, book number space, and borrowing policy of the library. Between the title and book number space is a horizontal dividing line. In the number space, a number has been stamped in blue ink. 43. [Bookplate for Evans Bros.] Black ink on cream paper. At the top of the bookplate sits the title and address of the library. Beneath this is a header for the library rules, written in Germanic font. Beneath this section sits a horizontal dividing line, followed by the five individual rules and policies. This section is divided into two columns. On the left are headers for each type of rule or policy, and on the right sits the body of each. Between the two columns is a vertical dividing line. 44. [Bookplate for F. W. R. Johnston] Black ink on cream paper. The border of the bookplate is decorated with black and white checkers with a thin white line on the side of the border. In the center of the bookplate is a modernized heraldic design. The background of the center of the bookplate is black with small white dots. Text is printed at the top of the bookplate in white block letters. In the middle of the bookplate is a crest-wreath from which extends a knight’s armoured arm holding a sword that is printed on top of the block lettering. There is a black eight-pointed star with a hole in the middle on the knight’s elbow. The motto is printed on a ribbon that extends up along the left side of the knight’s arm and then cuts across and starts curling down on the right side of the arm, extending out horizontally on the right side and curling back up again. Capitalized, black, serif font is printed on three parts of the ribbon. The part of the ribbon that curls up on the right side has a black stem with leaves on it. The ribbon has a border of two, thin black lines. Below the crest-wreath is a chunkier scroll with curling ends on all sides. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, curling, black, serif font. The last name is larger than the first initials. Below the same is a stylized white and black infinity symbol. Within the borders, in the bottom right corner, there is a small white circle with a white cross in the center. 45. [Bookplate for Fowler’s Lending Library and B. Fowler] Black ink on light-brown paper. At the top, the title of the lending library is printed, part of which is in Germanic lettering. Beneath is a short horizontal dividing line, followed by the loan policy. Printed vertically on the right-side of the plate is a book number. 46. [Bookplate for Francis Henry Wilkinson] In black, red, blue, green, orange, and gold ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarter, gules, parted per fess, vair, azure and argent. Three unicorns, passant, two over one. Second quarter, gules, parted per fess, or, with three annulets, azure. Three crosses, patée fitched, or, two over one. Third quarter, gules, a spur, or. A chief, argent, partition line, or, with three cocks, erased, gules. Vizored helm of an esquire or gentleman above the escutcheon, with tasseled mantling. Above the helm is a curved crest wreath with a demi-talbot, sajant, holding in one paw a rose, stalked leaved and seeded. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 47. [Bookplate for Francois Biron] In black ink on tan paper, the bookplate consists of a background of black ink with inversed / knocked out lettering in tan. 48. [Bookplate for Frank McIver] Ornate border surrounding the text, all in black ink on tan paper with some pink staining. Manuscript notes in brownish ink. 49. [Bookplate for Fraser Institute] Black ink on cream paper. In the top-right corner sits a dotted horizontal line. Beneath this rests a circular crest for the library. Along the outer rim of the crest is the name and city of the library ; in the center is a bust of a reindeer is printed above heraldic ribbon with French wording within it. Four maple leaves are also within this inner-portion of the crest. Beneath the crest are three additional doted lines, containing two hand-written notes. 50. [Bookplate for G Wirthrich] In black ink. Decorated escutcheon is parted per fess. Top, gules (red), a man cut off at the hips, bearded, with a downturned arrow in his right hand, a club in his left, a rapier in his mouth, and wearing a rounded hat. Bottom, azure (blue), a battle-axe and a club crossed. Supporters, two gryphons combatant with arrowed tongues standing on stairs. Above the escutcheon is a ducal coronet. 51. [Bookplate for Gabrielle Labelle] Black ink on cream paper. The border consists of two black lines on the left and right-hand sides. At the base of each side are black decorative spiraling lines. The top and bottom portion of the border are more elaborate. These borders are thicker with a thin black line on either side and a thick black line in the center. The border is wavy with the lines slanting on either side towards the center of the border. On the top and bottom center of the border is a small half circle decorated with black stripes. In the upper righthand corner of the bookplate is text printed in a stylized serif, capitalized, black font. In the middle of the bookplate is a drawing of a woman sitting at a tall desk reading an open book. The desk is narrow and tall with cupboard at the back. The cupboard is round at the top and the doors are decorated with simple slanted lines. The woman has her hair up and is wearing a dress with puffed sleeves decorated with a simple flower. The skirt of the dress is extremely large and round. The skirt extends out across the entire bottom half of the bookplate. Part of the skirt is decorated with stylized spiral lines and a flower. At the base of the skirt, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in a stylized cursive, black, sentence case font. 52. [Bookplate for George Charles Williamson] Executed in black ink on white paper, the text is surrounded by a double-lined border in which the inside line is thinner than the outside line. 53. [Bookplate for George Desbarats] Black ink on cream paper. A slim, beaded border with curlicues in each corner surrounds the title of Desbarats private library. Above Desbarats’ name “Madame” is handwritten in black ink. A blank number line is printed below the title with two handwritten entries. 54. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 55. [Bookplate for Gerald E. Hart by Edwin Cox & Co.] Multicoloured ink on cream paper. Leaves with three pointed leaves adorn the corner of a brick pattern background. The leaves and brick are a pale green. There is an elaborate image printed on top of the pale green pattern. The bricks form an arch shape in the top centre to surround an elaborate multicoloured, painted arch. The arch is brown, gold, and black with ‘X’ decorations and borders. The arch surrounds a multicolour stained glass window, at the forefront of which sits a monk writing in a book. The stained glass window features a central circular decoration with three red circular borders surrounding three yellow circles, in the center of which are yellow flowers with three petals and green accents. In the outer spaces between the circles are rounded triangular lined insertions. At the very center of the three circles is a three ringed circle. To the bottom left and right of the circle decoration are more teardrop shaped sections with tapered bottoms. They each features yellow flowers with stems. Below the right floral decoration are two more similarly shaped sections with a swirling ribbon in each atop a blue crosshatch background. The arch connects to a Romanesque pillar on either side. The arch connects to an elaborately decorated bench, which has a golden floral motif. A bearded monk sits on the bench in floor-length yellow robes. The monk faces the right, where there is a desk. The desk is decorated on the side with ‘X’ decorations. Atop the desk is an open book that the monk is writing on. Below the desk is a decorative bird with a long, curved neck and floral elements extending from its back. The bird is accented with gold. To the right of the bird, partly reaching up to the top of the desk, are two rolled up pieces of paper. The floor consists of two thin platforms with green accents. A smaller rectangle is below with a gold crosshatch pattern. Text in the style of medieval manuscripts is printed atop. The first letter of each word is more stylized and in red font ; the rest of the text is blue. A thin ledge extends from the bottom of that rectangle. It tapers down to a more narrow line with two small pointed feet at the left and right sides. In that small section is a repeating geometric pattern in gold on a brown background. Below the entire image is small, red, capitalized, sans-serif font. 56. [Bookplate for Gilbert Finlay Girdwood] Black ink on white paper. Argent and sable with a straight line down the middle. Left hand side is sable and argent per pale charged with three castle towers, two over one. Right hand side is argent, with a chevron engrailed sable. Chevron surrounded by three roundlets sable, two over one. Shield is wrapped in stylized bordure. At the top, is a crest featuring a demi-lion rampant guardant, tail extended holding a tree in its right paw. Lion sits on a crest-wreath. Below is a motto on a stylized banner with decorative ends. The bottom of the bookplate has typed cursive fond followed by serif font. 57. [Bookplate for Girls’ Reading Room Lending Library] Black ink on orange paper. Border consists of thin black lines with small, round floral decorations. Inside the border, there are several lines of text. The first is in small, bold, black, serif font. The next line is in large, black, capitalized serf font with decorative first letters for reach word. The next line of text has decorative arrows on either side and is printed in small, black, capitalized sans serif font. The next line is in slightly larger black, capitalized, serif font. Underneath is small, italicized thin black serif font with a dotted line for a handwritten number. There is jagged line separating the above font from a short description of the lending terms, printed in black times new roman font. 58. [Bookplate for Gordon Elliott] In blue ink on white paper, text within a single blue line border. 59. [Bookplate for H. B. Descrochers] Black ink on cream paper. A chain border surrounds the title of Descrochers’ private library. A blank number line is printed below the title. 60. [Bookplate for Harry E. Jones] Shiny texturized black ink is raised off the white paper. An elaborate border surrounds the central image. The border has two thin black lines on the outside and then has a series of repeating leafy floral shapes. The floral design is quite pointed and recurs in square sections all around the border. At each corner the design points out towards the corner. The inside of the border is surrounded by a thick black line. At the top of the border, an unfurled banner that is wider than the border sites atop of it. Text is printed in capitalized, block serif font. Below the ribbon, within the borders, is a picture of two monks looking at a large book with text and illustrations. One monk is standing in shadow, his back illuminated by the sunlight streaming in from a window outside the frame on the right side of the bookplate. At the forefront is a seated monk, also with his back to the sun, who is holding the book open while the other monk points at a section. The monk is sitting in a wooden chair with small cutout designs on the back. The table is also wooden and is covered with other books and a feather quill in an inkwell. In front of the desk, a large book with a decorative cover rests against the table leg. To the left of the book is a plain vase.
