[Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 42. [Bookplate for A. C. Jones by Clare Victor Dwiggins] Black ink on cream paper. The border of the bookplate consists of intertwined thorny and leafy vines with thicker leaves in the corners. The top left and right corners also feature rose-like flowers. Near the top of the border, vines extend from the left and right sides towards the center of the bookplate design. Capitalized, black, whimsical font is at the top of the bookplate. Dots surround some of the words and some letters are looping or intertwined. In the center of the bookplate, a tall, thin, beautiful woman in a whimsical fluted dress stands atop a closed book. The woman’s hair is done up and decorated with flowers. Flowers also decorate the top of the dress, the bottom of which features a spiral pattern. The dress is cinched at the waist with a belt and similarly cinched around the thighs with a large ribbon tied in a bow. The bottom of the dress extends outwards and there is a lacey layer underneath. The woman is wearing slip-on high heels with bows on the front. Next to the large book the woman is standing on are two books, one small one in front of the book sitting on its side. The other book is standing upright and is behind the large book. The woman is bending towards a small, naked cherub with a single curl atop its head and feathery wings. The cherub is standing in front of a book open and standing on its pages with the spine up. The cherub is also holding an open book and looking smilingly up at the woman. Behind the woman, the bookplate creator’s name is printed in curling, capitalized, black font. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is printed in black, gothic, sentence case font. 43. [Bookplate for William Greening and Cornelia Greening by A. N. Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Elaborately decorated frame surrounds three round images, two small ones atop a larger, oval one. The border has a shelf-like appearance with the top featuring a series of curling, heart-shaped decorations with a large, spiraling curlicue extending to the left and right. The very centre of the top element features a leaf-like decoration pointing upwards. The top half of the sides of the border features symmetrical leafy curlicue decorations that extend downwards with a pseudo-fleurs-de-lis to a line of elaborate floral decorations. The large oval image extends to the sides of the borders and below the oval are decorations on both the left and right sides. The left side features a tennis racket entwined in leafy decoration. The right side contains golf clubs in the same leafy decoration. Leafy decoration also surround the two small images inside the border, which are connected by two wrapping ribbons in the centre. The image on the left features an explorer holding a walking stick and wearing a hat looking out onto a nature landscape. The landscape includes water and a mountain topped with clouds. The image on the right contains a road curving to the right. The right side of the road features foliage, including several palm trees. The large, central image shows a house with some of its garden in the foreground. The forefront of the image is a simple lawn, followed by several small trees on the left with plants in barrels, a table, and several chairs on the right. Between the trees and chairs is a path leading further into the garden and towards the house. The house is quite large and has at least two stories and a sheltered porch. Towards the other end of the house and garden are taller trees. Below the images is a rectangular box with a border. The border consists of two thin white lines with a darker centre between them. The centre of the rectangle contains text written in capitalized serif font in varying sizes. Below the rectangle, the artist’s name and date of creation is written in small, sentence-case serif font. Handwritten note in pencil on the back. 44. [Bookplate for D. Girouard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features right arm bent at elbow holding the top half of a spear on crest-wreath. Shield has sable and argent stripes, charged with three two-pointed flags two speckled sable on argent flags over one argent flag facing left. The top two flags are speckled, sable on argent, and the bottom flag is argent. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capital letters on ribbon with curling ends. Name typewritten in cursive sentence font. 45. [Bookplate] A stylized floral border surrounds the text, which is written in several different fonts and is found in the middle of the bookplate. The word 'Catholic' is written in a curly font with the words 'Circulating Library' printed in Gothic below. The book number is printed underneath, and there is a line dividing the upper part of the text from the middle, which lists the library rules. Below the library rules is another line, and below this is a hand symbol which points to further information on the library hours.
