[Bookplate for Hugh Macdonald Sinclair] Appearing at the top is a motto AD ASTRA VIRTUS. Star crest on a wreath sits on top of a gentleman's vizored helm with mantling. Bordure of shield has stars from the base to the dexter side and from the chief to the sinister side. Quarterly field has a lion rampant (meaning: masculinity, leadership, royalty, justice and strength) near the sinister chief and near the dexter base, and a unknown symbol on the dexter chief, and a ship (meaning: voyage, salvation, and seafaring) on the sinister base. Appearing at the bottom of the bookplate is another motto J'AIME LE MEILLEUR. 22. [Bookplate for Otto Braun and Michael B. Kunze by F. Nickel] In brown in on tan paper. Shield in upper left hand corner above which is mantling and a closed helmet in profile, indicating equires and gentlement. Three fusils vert on centre of shield. Bottom and right hand side of plate decorated with scales, compass and triangle. Artist's mark outside bottom right hand corner.`. 23. [Bookplate for Michael B. Kunze] Black ink on tan paper. Shield of Cercle Francais is surrounded by a double border with heavy mantling. Harvard's motto is at the top of the shield in three open books. Bottom half of the shield bear the initials of the Cercle Francais. Shield rests above the main text. 24. [Bookplate for Heinz von der Linden and Michael B. Kunze] Black ink on tan paper. Crest of gules rooster stands on a barred helmet in profile. Shield is quartered. Upper left quarter shows four or and three sable bars. Remaining three quarters each display a crescent moon. Light mantling. Text at top and bottom. 25. [Bookplate for Familie Mezler and Michael B. Kunze] In black ink, an unusual heraldic symbol with a helmet in the centre of the image. Protruding from the top of the helm are what appear to be two horns. Between the horns is the figure of a woman whose hands grasp the horns. From both side of the helm, and from below, flows extensive mantling flowing out and down framing another image of a woman, identical to the first, except that her skirt is now visible. 26. [Bookplate for Erich Falfenroth and Michael B. Kunze by F. Nickel] In brown ink, a sun radiates light over the background of the image from the top left corner. Included in the background is a crescent moon in the top right corner, an hourglass, in the lower left corner, and a compass in the lower right corner. In the foreground is a chaplet encircling a coat of arms. Atop the helm is a bird, possibly a falcon. The helm itself is front facing and grated (no significance in German heraldry). From either side of the helmet flow elaborate sprawls of mantling which curl down to the sides of the escucheon. The escucheon, in gules, (red) represented by lines drawn from chief to the base, is bordered in or (gold). Centered in the shield is a heavily bound book, with what appear to be latches to prevent unworthy eyes from reading its contents. From the top and bottom of the book flow a place marking ribbon. 27. [Bookplate for Maurie Barrett] Printed in black ink on white paper, with a peel and stick feature. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion standing on a wreath, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion holds aloft the maple leaf and looks out from his frame which is surrounded by more maple leaves in a double frame. The lion's position, with the dexter forepaw raised and head turned to face the viewer, is known as passant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 28. [Bookplate for Maurie Barrett] Printed in black ink on beige paper, with a glued back. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion atop a larger crown, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion stands firm with his rear right leg forward as if indicating an intent to pounce. This position, with all four paws on the ground and head turned to face the viewer, is known as statant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 29. [Bookplate for Thomae Perczel de Bonyhad and J. E. Horvath] Blue ink on light blue paper. The shield occupying the centre of the bookplate is quartered with rampant lions queue fourché on the dexter chief and sinister base, bendlets on the dexter base and a bend on the sinister chief. Over the shield sits a crowned helm with another rampant lion queue fourché leaning on a lyre. There is some mantling surrounding the shield and an ownership panel at the bottom with lion heads on its sides. 30. [Bookplate for George R. Alexander] This heraldic bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon with a galley at its centre. A galley is an ancient vessel propelled by oars, and is frequently used in the heraldry of naval officers. Also on the escutcheon are three cross crosslets fitchy sable -- one in dexter chief, one in sinister chief, and one in precise middle base. Atop the escutcheon is a half-visored helm in profile. Within the helm, one can see what appears to be the face of a cat. The helm is topped by a crest wreath and a horse's head, proper, couped and gules (red). From the helm flows extensive or and gules mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 31. [Bookplate for Edward J. C. Atterbury] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per fess. The chief is in vair, a fur tinture, and the base is divided paly, or (gold) and sable (black).The escutcheon is bordered by an elaborate frame and is topped by a straight crest wreath and a chaplet (an ancient ornament for the head, given to knights for acts of courtesy). Both sides of the escutcheon are adoned with mantling and a banner, containing the latin motto, hangs along its base. 32. [Bookplate for John Bebb] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with an or (gold) embattled fess. The fess contains two cross crosslets. On the azure surface of the escutcheon are three crescents, two over one. The escutcheon is bordered by an elaborate frame and topped by a visored helm in profile. Atop the helm is a crest wreath and an unicorn's head, couped and horned. From the helm flows extensive mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 33. [Bookplate for Robert Cochrane Barclay] This bookplate consists of a gules (red) escutcheon with an argent (silver) chevron. On it are three cross formy, two over one. Atop the shield is a helmet in profile, beaver down, topped by a crest wreath on which is a sword, or possibly a dagger. From the sides of the helmet flows elaborate mantling which curls up towards the sword and down to the base of the shield. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 34. [Bookplate for Bateman by Orlando Jewitt] This bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon, on which are three etoile topped crescents, two over one. There is also an additional smaller crescent located at the precise middle chief of the escutcheon. According to heraldic symbolism, the crescent represents the second son. On top of the shield is a helmet in profile, beaver open. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath and another etoile topped crescent. The crest also includes a vol (set of wings), erect, and mantling which pours down the sides of the shield. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. The image and text are framed by a thin single line border. 35. [Bookplate for Joseph Bewley] This non-traditional heraldic bookplate consists of a tilted argent (silver) escutcheon with a sable (black) chevron. On the escutcheon are three bird heads, erased, two over one. Atop the shield is an unusually large helmet in profile, topped by a twig with leaves, a crest wreath, and a stag head, erased. From the helmet flows mantling. Above and below the image are banners containing the text. The image and banners are set upon a designed background and framed by a double border. 36. [Bookplate for John Leeds Bozman] This bookplate consists of an argent (silver) escutcheon with a gules (red) fess. On the escutcheon are three sable (black) eagles, displayed, two over one. Raised above the shield on floral mantling is a curved crest wreath, and a perched cockatrice. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 37. [Bookplate for Macdonald Bridges] This bookplate consists of an argent escutcheon divided by a sable (black) cross. At the centre of the cross is a small lion's head. Atop the three-pointed shield is a small crest wreath on which rests a voyageur-type human figure, couped. Above the image is a banner containing the French motto. Below the shield is a tree, or bush, which grows up both sides of the shield, resembling heraldic mantling. 38. [Bookplate for John C. Brune] This bookplate consists of a pictorial escutcheon. The image is of a stag at speed emerging from the woods. Above the shield is a helmet, front facing with bars, topped with a crest wreath and a rack of antlers. From the sides of the helmet flows elaborate heraldic mantling. 39. [Bookplate] This mysterious bookplate consists of a large'V' surrounded by mantling and topped by a crown, or coronet. 40. [Bookplate for William Brummell] This bookplate consists of an azure (blue) escutcheon with a wavy argent (silver) fess. At the dexter, middle, and sinister chief are three birds, wings closed. Above the middle chief bird is a label, the mark of an eldest son. At the base are two etoiles. Perched atop the shield, on a straight crest wreath, is a fourth bird holding a twig in its beak.
