[Bookseller's Tickets for Samuel Carsley] 1) In dark blue ink on white paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a field of dark blue ink with a thin white / reserved-out border surrounding white text. 2) In gold metallic ink on red glossy paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a simple gold border surrounding gold text. 2. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 3. [Bookplate for Charles Theodore Hart] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features the head of a stag in profile on a crest-wreath. The shield is pointed at the top left, top right, and bottom corners. The bottom of the shield curves to a central point. The shield is argent with a sable chevron charged with two stars on the top left and top right sides. The stars are white with black shading and a black circle in the center. Below the chevron the shield is charged with a springing stag. Below the shield the motto is printed on a ribbon in capitalized, serif font. Underneath the motto is the bookplate owner’s name in curling, italicized font. 4. [Bookplate for William Greening and Cornelia Greening by A. N. Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Elaborately decorated frame surrounds three round images, two small ones atop a larger, oval one. The border has a shelf-like appearance with the top featuring a series of curling, heart-shaped decorations with a large, spiraling curlicue extending to the left and right. The very centre of the top element features a leaf-like decoration pointing upwards. The top half of the sides of the border features symmetrical leafy curlicue decorations that extend downwards with a pseudo-fleurs-de-lis to a line of elaborate floral decorations. The large oval image extends to the sides of the borders and below the oval are decorations on both the left and right sides. The left side features a tennis racket entwined in leafy decoration. The right side contains golf clubs in the same leafy decoration. Leafy decoration also surround the two small images inside the border, which are connected by two wrapping ribbons in the centre. The image on the left features an explorer holding a walking stick and wearing a hat looking out onto a nature landscape. The landscape includes water and a mountain topped with clouds. The image on the right contains a road curving to the right. The right side of the road features foliage, including several palm trees. The large, central image shows a house with some of its garden in the foreground. The forefront of the image is a simple lawn, followed by several small trees on the left with plants in barrels, a table, and several chairs on the right. Between the trees and chairs is a path leading further into the garden and towards the house. The house is quite large and has at least two stories and a sheltered porch. Towards the other end of the house and garden are taller trees. Below the images is a rectangular box with a border. The border consists of two thin white lines with a darker centre between them. The centre of the rectangle contains text written in capitalized serif font in varying sizes. Below the rectangle, the artist’s name and date of creation is written in small, sentence-case serif font. Handwritten note in pencil on the back. 5. [Bookplate for Jenkins] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a furry lion passant reguardant standing atop a castle tower. The castle tower is above a crest-wreath. Elaborate, curling, feathery black and white mantling extends from the top of the shield and expands out along the sides. The shield is divided per pale. The left section has a white background with black dots and is charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. The right section of the shield is charged with a bird perched on a tree branch growing out of the ground. There is no background except for the branch and ground that is lighter on top and darker at the bottom. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon below the shield. There is shading on the ends of the ribbon. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in a more stylized, paler, capitalized, black serif font underneath the motto. 6. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on pale pinkish tan paper. Ornate curlicue border with circular corner designs. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters, while the institute name is written in title case with gothic script. Separated by thin straight lines, the card number field is written in stylized bold font. The lending rules are written in serif font. 7. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on tan paper. Curlicue and straight-line border. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters, with the institute name in sentence case gothic script. Separated by centered, thin straight lines, there is a left aligned field for class and a right aligned field for card number written in bold serif font. The lending rules are written in italicized serif font. 8. [Bookplate for A. Renand and U.E. Archambault] Black ink on white paper. Border consists of two intertwined braided strands with elaborate corners. Decorative gothic font at the top of the bookplate is surrounded by lines with geometric accents. Smaller, sans serif, capitalized, black font is below surrounded by matching lines. There are three rows of dotted lines. Between the lines, smaller text is printed in serif, capitalized, black font. Underneath is italicized, black font in various sizes. At the bottom of the bookplate is larger, black, cursive font with small, italicized black font in the bottom right corner. 9. [Bookplate for Catholic Commercial Academy of Montreal, Wm Price, and U. E. Archambault by Geo. E. Desbarats] Black ink on white paper. The border of the bookplate comprises three layers: the outermost is an abstract floral motif on the four corners ; secondly is a geometric pattern of triangles ; the innermost layer is a plain line. Curlicues surround the words “Catholic” and “of Montreal.” The bookplate is a pre-printed form with space for the prize name, winner, year and date to be filled out. 10. [Bookplate for Hugel] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a lion rampant holding a flower with three petals between its paws. The lion stands atop a crown with elaborate, feathery wings extending upwards to the left and right. The crown is round and flat and decorated with three diamonds across the front. The crown sits on the head of a baronet and knight helm. Elaborate, curling mantling extends to the left and right and down the bookplate, becoming blacker towards the ends. The shield is divided per cross. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with a lion rampant. The lion in the top left faces to the right, whereas the lion in the bottom right faces to the left. Like the lion in the crest, these lions hold a flower with three petals in their paws. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are argent with sable dots. They are each charged with three black diamonds, two over one. The diamonds have black shading on the right-hand sides. Below the shield, a curling ribbon with non-straight edges has the motto printed in black, capitalized, serif font. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate, black, large, sentence case, Gothic font with extensive curling decorations surrounding the text. 11. [Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 12. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on yellow paper. Ornate curlicue floral border. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters. The name of the institute is written in title case with gothic script. Separated by thin straight lines, the card number field is written in bold, stylized font. The lending rules are written in italicized serif font. 13. [Bookplate for Ruth Goodell by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on yellow paper. The scene is framed by an architectural arch with a column on each side, decorated with stylized vines and leaves. At the top left- and right-hand corners, initials are separated by a banner in the centre. The background features a mountain with a silhouette of a tree (possibly a laurel) on the left-hand side. The foreground depicts an ancient Greek amphora (vase with handles) with a frieze of figures and decorative patterns. To the left is an open book with a scroll above it identifying the artist and date of the bookplate. To the right of the vase is a globe showing a stylized representation of North and South America. Other closed books surround these objects. 14. [Bookplate for Joseph Edgar Guimont by Chalifour Ltée Journal “Le Nord”] Blue ink on cream paper. Capitalized, block, sans-serif letters are printed at the top of the bookplate. Below the text is gothic font in sentence case with a thin blue line framing it atop and below. In the center of the bookplate is an image of a right hand reaching out of a cloud to pour oil into an oil lamp with the flame burning. The lamp is elaborately decorated with floral and curlicue embellishments. The lamp sits atop a closed book with the spine facing out. The cloud extends behind the lamp and book as well. A thin blue line separates the image from sentence-case serif font and another thin blue line is below that text. Below the line is thin italicized font and a dotted line. At the bottom of the bookplate is a thin blue line directly above some smaller, sentence-case serif blue font. 15. [Bookplate for Gerhard Haubold and Michael B. Kunze] Image of three ichthus (a symbol of two intersecting arcs that represent a fish) that meet at the centre. The text fills the space in north, south-west, and south-east parts of the image. 16. [Bookplate for Andrew Allan] In black ink on red paper, this bookplate features an ornate border surrounding text in the center. 17. [Bookbinder's Ticket] In black ink on white paper, the bookbinder's ticket consists of a border made up of joined circles surrounding black text of various sizes and fonts. The word 'Carswell' begins with a decorative letter 'C'. A decorative element in the shape of a water drop or a flame is found in the lower middle of the bookbinder's ticket. 18. [Bookplate for National Prison Reform Association] In black ink on white paper. Image includes a rectangular decorative border in a repetitive pattern. Within the border all of the text is in a capitalized sans serif font, except the owner's name, which consists of upper and lower case letters in a serif font. 19. [Bookplate for Mechanics' Institute of Moodyville] In black ink, a decorative border surrounds text printed in a variety of fonts and hand written notes. The paper is highly mottled, possibly the result of mold. 20. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or.
