[Bookplate for Hill’s Library] Black ink on cream paper. Handwritten notes across at the top of the bookplate in the center and right corner. Typewritten bold capital letters in serif font followed by smaller non-bold letters. The line below features bold font in sentence case. A thin black line with a thicker rectangle in the middle separates text. Text below the line is large, capital, bold font. The following line is in smaller sentence case. The next line of text is in capital, non-bold font. A thin line with two small diamonds and one large diamond in the center separate the text. Below the line is italicized capital sans serif font. Underneath that is smaller, bold sans serif font. Lending periods written on the right side of the bookplate in italicized sentence case serif font. [Bookplate for Hood] This bookplate consists of a escutcheon, azure (blue) and a fret, argent (silver), with a chief, or (gold), charged with three crescents. The shield features an inescutcheon or, with a chevron sable (black), charged with three wildcat heads cabossed, two over one. Above the inescutcheon is another small escutcheon argent, with a human hand gules, indicating the status of Knight and Baronet. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, and the escutcheon is supported by a merman at dexter and a mermaid at sinister. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire achievement is bookplate owner's name. 23. [Bookplate for Ian Waldie by Alexander Scott Carter] In black ink on white paper, a sailboat at sea with a fish depicted in the waves below. Three seagulls are flying around the boat. A wide, bold floral border surrounds the image of the ship, with a few books and a lyre above it. 24. [Bookplate for James M. Wishart by Leslie Victor Smith] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a two line border surrounding a circular design of vines and leaves with the words 'EX LIBRIS' appearing at the top. In the upper third of the design at center appears a University of Toronto Medical School coat of arts bearing a skull and crossbones. Below the coat of arm to the left appears an open book and to the right appears a three-stringed harp. The initials of the designer, Leslie Victor Smith, and the date "1940" appear at the bottom of the design. Below the design appears the name of the owner. 25. [Bookplate for Joseph-Olivier Archambault] In black ink on yellow paper. A decorative border with integrated flowers and ornamentation in corners surrounds the text. 26. [Bookplate for Maria Anna Grimaldi] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), charged with three esquire helmets, sable (black), en profile at fess, and a lion passant below. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet, above which is a crest of an armoured arm embowed clutching a curtana, or a pointless sword of mercy. The escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate mantling, and the entire crest by a stylized border. Below the heraldic image is the Latin text. 27. [Bookplate for Mechanics' Institute of Moodyville] In black ink, a decorative border surrounds text printed in a variety of fonts and hand written notes. The paper is highly mottled, possibly the result of mold. 28. [Bookplate for Norman H. Friedman by A. G. Racey] Brown ink on cream paper. A man is seated in a wing chair by the fire, wearing slippers and reading a book ; his face is not visible but his pipe pokes out from behind the chair. A fire is roaring in a brick fireplace behind him, with a bust labeled 'Kipling' on the mantelpiece ; the mantel is inscribed with the words 'Be a reader but not a book keeper' with initials below the quote that appear to read A.G.A. In the foreground, there are piles of books and manuscripts and a small dog. 29. [Bookplate for P. I. P. Sherburne by Elvey] This bookplate, in black ink, consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants, vert (green), are charged with an eagle, displayed. The second and third quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a lion, rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath, topped by a unicorn's head, horned and couped. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 30. [Bookplate for Pierre Louis Deschenaux] The bookplate has a border of small bows surrounding the text. The majority of the text is in a bold serif font, and the word “Quebec” is in italics. 31. [Bookplate for Robert A. Harrison] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a demi-lion rampant on the top part of a castle tower. The lion is wearing a crown and holding a floral wreath in its paws. There is a gentlemen and esquire’s helm surrounded by elaborately curling sable and argent mantling that extends out to each side and tapers down to the base of the bookplate. Shield is sable and charged with three demi-lions rampant, two over one. The lions are wearing crowns. The motto is below the shield printed in capitalized block white letters on a banner with curling ends. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, gothic sentence-case font at the bottom of the bookplate. 32. [Bookplate for Sir Lawrence Palk by Ezekiel Abraham Ezekiel] In black ink: Sable, an argent eagle displayed, an argent bordure engrailed ; at the precise middle chief, the inesceutcheon of a baronet (argent, a hand gules) ; surmounted by a wreath of argent and sable, the crest a demi-globe or hemisphere ['semi-terrestrial globe of the northern hemisphere'], an eagle rousant, wings displayed and elevated ; motto on a ribbon below the shield. The bottom right corner of the bookplate was torn away and has been replaced with a light paper. 33. [Bookplate for Stanley C. Bagg] This bookplate consists of black gothic text surrounded by an elaborate border, all printed on yellow paper. 34. [Bookplate for Thomas Aylwin] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per fess, barry nebuly of three, argent [white] and gules [red]. Three lions, rampant, sable [black], two over one. Above the escutcheon is mantling, on which sits a curved crest wreath and a paw, erased, sable, within a Mural crown proper. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 35. [Bookplate for United Service Club] This bookplate's design features a royal crown above a thistle, clovers, a rose, and two surrounding branches. 36. [Bookplate for Vincent Massey and Alice Massey by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on white paper. This coat of arms is described in great detail by the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada (RHSC), in their 'Members' Roll of Arms,' under the entry for the Rt. Hon. Charles Vincent Massey. They write: 'The arms argent [silver], on a chevron sable [black] between three lozenges of the last, each charged with a fleur de lis of the first, three stags' heads erased or [gold] ; on a canton azure [blue], a representation of the crest of Canada as an honourable augmentation. The crest out of an antique crown or, a bull's head sable, armed gold, charged on the neck with a lozenge argent, thereon a fleur de lis also sable.' This bookplate adheres to the design described above by the RHSC, though the 'honourable augmentation,' of the Canadian crest in dexter chief, does not appear in this escutcheon. 37. [Bookplate for W. Gordon Mills] In black ink on cream paper. This image depicts a nighttime scene with a single star in the sky and two evergreen trees silhouetted in front of a lake and mountains. Superimposed upon this landscape, a lyre sits next to a scroll which reads "Sonata Apassionata" (sic) and has notes from the score. The initial "M" is in the lower right hand corner as a possible signature. 38. [Bookplate for W. MacDonald MacKay] A man in a powdered wig sit in a library, looking out the window, with a book laid out on a table before him. The window is open and flowers and vines grow around its frame. A book at the lower right corner of the plate lists the date and possible initials of the artist:"Sept 1896" and "RJ." 39. [Bookplate for William Charles de Meuron Wentworth-FitzWilliam by John Vinycomb] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon framed by a solid bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; first and fourth quadrants are lozengy, argent (silver) and gules (red) ; second and third quadrants are sable (black) with an or (gold) chevron, and three lion heads, two over one. The escutcheon is crested by a large earl's coronet. Above the coronet are two additional crests ; the dexter consists of a helm, sinister and grated, crowned by what appears to be a duke's coronet, and elaborate mantling ; the sinsister consists of a helm, dexter and grated, topped by a curved wreath, a gryphon passant, and elaborate mantling. The escutcheon and bordure are supported by a male "savage" on either side. In heraldry, the "savage" is a symbol of wildness and purity. Both figures are bearded and nude, except for a wreath of leaves to cover their middle section. Both figures hold a tree trunk. The dexter figure, who appears younger, holds the trunk with his right arm and it descends behind him. The sinister figure, who appears older, holds the trunk with his left arm and it descends in front of him. The escutcheon and the figures rest on a mantel, which is draped with a banner containing the Latin motto.
