[Bookplate for Thomas Troughton] Printed in black ink on white paper, in the upper left of the ex libris appears the crest of a lion erased issuing from a straight wreath. At the base of the lion's head is a veil sable with two pellet over one plate. To the right is the crest of a stag statant issuing from a straight wreath. Below the two crests appears a banner bearing the motto 'CARPE DIEM.' At the bottom of the ex libris appears the name of the owner, 'The Revd. Thomas Tronghton.'. 46. [Bookplate for L’Institut Canadien] Printed in black ink, a thick decorative border surrounds the text. 47. [Bookplate for Chs-Ed. Parrot] Red ink on white paper. Consisting only of text, the owner's name and location are surrounded by a border. Exposure to water has cause the ink to smudge. 48. [Bookplate for William R. Ridell] Shield, argent (silver), charged with a chevron, gules (red), and three garb, aulned. Above the crest is a greyhound, rampant ; only top half of dog is visible behind a wreath of vert (green) and a second colour, unclear. Beneath the shield is a banner which ends in two tassels on either side, reading 'I hope to Share.' Box on lower left side for entering book number, unused. Tear at bottom right. 49. [Bookplate for University of British Columbia] The bookplate is a dedication bookplate recognising a specific collection, as well as the benefactors that rendered it possible for The University of British Columbia to acquire it. The bookplate has no art, symbols, or colour on it, and appears to be only a dedication. 50. [Bookplate] The text of the bookplate is surrounded by an elaborate border decorated with various religious figures and themes. Angels kneel on either side of the upper corners and face inwards towards a man holding a book and looking outwards from an arch. The sides are decorated with ornate columns, at the bottom of which are crosses and a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Both the top and bottom portions of the border are decorated with stylized curls. The word 'Catholic' is printed in a bold font, and 'Circulating Library' is in a curly stylized Gothic font. The rules of the library are divided from the rest of the text by bars at the top and bottom, and there is a hand symbol pointing to the library's hours of operation at the bottom of the bookplate. The price of the library subscription is given in shillings, dating this to the era of the Canadian pound which was in use until currency decimalization came into force in 1858. 52. [Bookplate for Carnegie Library of Ottawa] There are two solid, black line borders around the text. The bookplate is printed in black ink, and the words 'Carnegie Library of Ottawa' are printed in red ink in a Gothic script. Two thin black lines separate the words 'Carnegie Library of Ottawa' from the 'library rules' text. 53. [Bookplate for Henri Rainville] This bookplate depicts a large, bespectacled rat, dressed in what appears to be eighteenth-century attire and displaying a prominent tail and whiskers. Facing away from the viewer, the rat is seated at a table in front of a window, through which the leaves of a tree can be seen. The rodent holds a quill pen and is poised to continue writing in a book that is propped open on the table with a second, closed volume. 54. [Bookplate for William Lawson Grant by J. E. H. MacDonald] This bookplate features a wind-blown tree set upon a waving banner containing the originator's motto. It is surrounded with flora, which contains Scottish thistles, maple leaves, a fleur de lis, the number 59, two portraits of men, and the artist's initials. At the top of the design are three escutcheons, all argent (silver) and charged with various elements. 55. [Bookplate for Alma Bryner and Cyril Bryner] This bookplate portrays, in black ink on white paper, two easy chairs in front of a fireplace. Two figures are seated in the chairs (with only their feet showing) reading books. 56. [Bookplate for J. E. Horvath by M. Trinque] This bookplate, in black ink on white paper with grey background portrays a man seated and thinking atop an architectural spiral. 57. [Bookplate for P. I. P. Sherburne by Elvey] This bookplate, in black ink, consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants, vert (green), are charged with an eagle, displayed. The second and third quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a lion, rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath, topped by a unicorn's head, horned and couped. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 58. [Bookplate for Hart House] This bookplate's design is divided into three sections. At the top, the University of Toronto shield sits to the left of the text. In the middle is a picture of Hart House as seen from above. The name of the donor is in the lower third. 59. [Bookplate for Charles M. Harris] This bookplate's monochromatic design created in peacock blue ink depicts the interior of an ornately decorated library. The scene features a man on a ladder perusing book titles. The man seems unable to select only one book. He appears to have his hands full, and yet he continues to scan shelved titles for other desirable volumes. He holds one book in his hand, one slipped under his elbow and another clenched between his knees.
