[Bookplate for Winifred Baker] This bookplate, black ink on ivory paper, consists of a number of books standing up right on a flat surface. In front of the standing books is a book left open, and a candle stick with candle alight. From the candle's flame, light radiates out in all directions. Running along the left border are a series of vertical lines of varying widths, and along the right border are a series of ten small symbols. 42. [Bookplate for David Stewart Erskine] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered per cross, and contains an inescutcheon. The first quarter, azure (blue), contains three garbe, two over one. The second quarter is itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, azure with an or (gold) riband and six cross crosslets fitchy sable (black) ; the second and third quarters are argent (silver), with a pale, sable. The third quarter of the escutcheon is also itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, or, with a fess in checky (alternate squares of metal and fur), argent and azure ; the second and third quarters are azure, containing three garbe, two over one. The fourth quarter, argent, with six bars, gemelles (doubles), contains a lion rampant, sable and proper. The inescutcheon, gules (red) contains an eagle, displayed and proper, and a ray of sun issuing out of the dexter corner. Atop the escutcheon is the coronet of an earl, topped by a grated helmet (peer), dexter. Upon the helmet is a curved crest wreath and a dexter cubit arm holding a club. From either side of the crest flows elaborate mantling. The escutcheon is accompanied by two supporters. The dexter supporter is an ostrich, while the sinister supporter is a griffin. Below the escutcheon and the supporters is a banner containing the English motto. 43. [Bookplate for Lord Francis Gray by Daniel Lizars and William Home] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with a lion rampant, with an engrailed bordure, argent (silver). The shield is supported by a lion rampant guardant on each site. Above the shield is a crown denoting baron status, and directly above the crown is a crest of an anchor upon a straight wreath. Immediately below the shield is another crest, a swan, also upon a straight wreath. Extending out from the bottom of the shield are two banners, with bookplate test within. The bookplate is bordered by an elaborate leaf design. 44. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 45. [Bookplate for William Smith] This bookplate, in black ink, contains an escutcheon, gules (red), with a chevron, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and is charged with two crescents over one garbe. Above the escutcheon is a dexter closed helmet, which is crested by a curved wreath and an eagle's head, erased, with a crown around its neck. From the helmet flows very elaborate mantling which flows out and down to the base of the escutcheon. Above the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 46. [Bookplate for William Hulme] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are parted per pale, with dexter half argent (silver) and sinister half with a barry of eight argent and vert (green). The quarters are charged with two bendlets, one invected. Quarters two and three are argent, parted per chevron, charged with two chaplets and a lion's head erased, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a viscount crown, without the cap or fur, and above the crown is a helmet, positioned in three-quarters profile, indicating the status of peer. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a cock with a heraldric rose, standing upon a trumpet. Elaborate mantling and banner containing Latin motto radiates out from the helmet, and two elephants support the shield. The elephant at dexter is charged with another heraldic rose, and the elephant at sinister is charged with another chaplet. Below the shield is a banner, with name of bookplate owner. 47. [Bookplate for Henry Christopher Wise] In black ink. No escutcheon. A straight crest wreath charged with a demi-lion, rampant, holding a damask rose, stalked leaved and seeded, in the mouth a snake that is entwined about the body. 48. [Bookplate by Francis Adams Sc.] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First quarter, or, a lion, gules, rampant. Second quarter, argent, an arm embowed fessways holding an axe shaped like a cross formy. Third quarter, argent, a lymphad, sails furled, on water. Fourth quarter, argent, a fish on water. Shield supporters, two horse-like beasts with short tails, combatant. Helm, a diadem topped with a lion, couped. Below the escutcheon is a banner with mantling containing the Latin motto. 49. [Bookplate for Franklin Billner] In black ink. Escutcheon tilted to the left and parted per pale. The dexter half, or [gold], with a lion, gules [red], coward, holding a fan-like object between its front paws. The sinister half parted per fess, sable [black], on a field, or, with decorative patterns not typically seen in heraldry. Escutcheon surrounded by leafy mantling. Above is a tilting helmet on top of which sits an unidentifiable crown. On top of the crown is a lion, gules, coward, holding a fan-like object in its front paws. Wings, displayed, fan out from the top of the crown surrounding the lion. 50. [Bookplate for Jeffrey H. Burland] In black ink. Bank note style design. In the middle is a picture of stacked books with letters on their spines spelling out the word "number," and an open one in front containing the book number in red ink. Below is a picture of an inkwell and quill on a tasseled cloth. 51. [Bookplate for Louis Berger by Rene de Brem] In black ink. An open window looking out on a town and cathedral in front of clouds. An old man looking into a microscope with a skeleton and a nude woman (possibly Venus) looking over his shoulder. There are open books and a jar containing an indistinguishable object, possibly a fetus. 52. [Bookplate for Harry Miller] Brown ink. The initials 'H.M.' are formed out of sticks of wood. Perched atop the letter "H" is a bespectacled owl with a feather tucked behind its ear. It reads by the light of a lamp of knowledge. 53. [Bookplate for McIntosh Art Gallery by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream paper. White ivy border over stippled black background. Names of John Gordon McIntosh and Wilhelmina Morris McIntosh inscribed on facing pages of book, behind which is a lit torch whose rays span out from the center of the plate. The text of the plate is on a scroll which is woven around a lyre, a symbol of harmony. 54. [Bookplate for Norman H. Friedman by A. G. Racey] Brown ink on cream paper. A man is seated in a wing chair by the fire, wearing slippers and reading a book ; his face is not visible but his pipe pokes out from behind the chair. A fire is roaring in a brick fireplace behind him, with a bust labeled 'Kipling' on the mantelpiece ; the mantel is inscribed with the words 'Be a reader but not a book keeper' with initials below the quote that appear to read A.G.A. In the foreground, there are piles of books and manuscripts and a small dog. 55. [Bookplate for Howard Murray] In black ink on cream coloured paper. This bookplate depicts a sitting room with two chairs and a window looking out on trees, rolling hills and a body of water. A scroll at the base containing the originator's name is flanked by a pile of books. 56. [Bookplate for Boys and Girls Library of the National Council of Jewish Women by G. H.] A large book with a man peeking out of its splayed pages hovers above a collection of images from children’s literature: ships, trains, flamingo, cat, knight on horseback,and other human figures. The symbol of the National Council of Jewish Women sits at the center of the book plate with the date of the organization's foundation. 57. [Bookplate for Edmund Smith Hopkins by E. Soucher] This bookplate features a pictorial design with flowers, books, and other miscellaneous items along with a quote from John Wilson, a Scottish author. 58. [Bookplate for Paramount Sweets and Tea Room by F. A. C.] Created in black ink on white paper. The text is surrounded by a border composed of a two lines, one of which is straight while the other has fluted decorations. Three lines composed of little squares separate the business's name and contact information from the list of library regulations. These regulations are followed by a final decorative line. 59. [Bookplate for Arthur Richard Springett] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield or escutcheon Gules (red) party per fess wavy with three crescents, two over one, Argent (silver). The closed, barred helm in profile toward the dexter half bears a crest of a displayed eagle upon a nowed snake in a figure eight and a straight wreath. The helm is surrounded by mantling. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the motto 'MEMOR ET FIDELIS' [Latin: Mindful and Faithful]. 60. [Bookplate for J. Harry Smith by William Walker Alexander] Printed in brown ink on cream paper, the bookplate shows a man in the dress of a 19th-century agricultural laborer against a background of clouds and a landscape of fields, trees, and three buildings (possibly a house, a barn, and an out building). The man holds a basket in his left hand and sows seeds with his right hand. In the left foreground, a lamb frolics next to an open book. The right page of the book reads 'LAMB'S / TALES.' Underneath the open book appears a manuscript upon which rests an inkwell and a quill pen. The date '1942' is written in the bottom left corner of the manuscript. To the right of the book appears a mailbox with 'R. R. / 4' written on the door. On the side of the mailbox appear the words 'Knoll Farm / J. HARRY SMITH.'
