[Bookplate for Frederick Starr] Woodblock print consisting of six separate bookplate designs. From left to right, top to bottom, designs consist of: a turtle with a hair-like tail ; two storks amid foliage ; a Japanese chrysanthemum ; a traditional Japanese dragon ; small bird perched on a cherry tree branch ; a fish swimming in a stream. Each design has two Japanese characters at top right and bottom left. 22. [Bookplate for Frederick Starr] Woodblock print consisting of six separate bookplate designs. From left to right, top to bottom, designs consist of: two butterflies in flight ; a single lobster a cherry tree branch in bloom ; two birds in flight around three stocks of bamboo two figures fan dancing ; three monkeys in the 'hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil' poses. Each design has two Japanese characters at top right and bottom left. 23. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 24. [Bookplate for George Francis Steele by E. J. W.] In black ink on white or cream paper it depicts a nude male figure riding a Pegasus in the upper left surrounded by a swirl of stars, planets, and other astronomical bodies. Another nude, winged male figure in the lower right holds a quill pen in his right hand and in his left, the end of a ribbon on which "EX LIBRIS / AD ASTRA" is written. A dark dome, possibly representing a planet, occupies the lower left. There are blue smudges, possibly ink, across the lower third of the bookplate. 25. [Bookplate for Godfrey G. Roundell Greene by W. and A. Mussett - The Heraldic Studio] In brown ink, escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants divided per pale, or (gold) and azure (blue), three stags trippant, two over one, all counter changed. The second and third quadrants, or, with a fess, gules (red) between three olive branches, two over one. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet with mantling, below a demi-dragon crest, azure, gorged, argent (silver). 26. [Bookplate for Henri Rainville] This bookplate depicts a large, bespectacled rat, dressed in what appears to be eighteenth-century attire and displaying a prominent tail and whiskers. Facing away from the viewer, the rat is seated at a table in front of a window, through which the leaves of a tree can be seen. The rodent holds a quill pen and is poised to continue writing in a book that is propped open on the table with a second, closed volume. 27. [Bookplate for Hill’s Library] Black ink on yellowing paper. Typewritten text in capital letters and bold followed by sentence case letters in varying serif font sizes. There is a thin line with stylized dots in the centre separating text. Below the line, text is written in large, capitalized, bold serif font. Below that is text written in bold, sentence case. Text is then written in non-bold capital letters. There is a thicker, stylized line with three dots in the centre separating text. Below the line is text written in capital sans serif font, followed by text in smaller, bold sans serif font. Further text is right aligned and written in italicized serif font. Text is then written in capital and sentence case serif font in multiple sizes with section separated by dots. Graphic of hand with index finger pointing right is next to capital, sans serif font. A squared squiggled line is below the finger graphic and above faded text in serif font. Below that is serif font in capital letters and then bold serif font in bold letters. That is separated from bold, capital, serif font with a squared, squiggled line. The following serif font is bold. Below that is larger, bolder serif-font. The following text is written in smaller sentence case and capitalized serif font. Below that is sentence case serif font, followed by larger sans serif font and then bold, capitalized, serif font. The last part of the text is written in sentence case serif font. Handwritten notes cover some of the typewritten text on the right side of the bookplate until approximately halfway down the bookplate. The bottom two corners of the bookplate have been cut off. The bookplate appears to be printed on top of a newspaper or magazine clipping, the recto of which is slightly visible through the bookplate. Black ink serif font text and some imagery are visible. The verso of the bookplate is clearly the other printed side of the magazine or newspaper with serif fonts in bold capital letters and non-bold sentence case letters. The recto of the original print is also slightly visible from the verso side. 28. [Bookplate for Hillfield School] In green ink. This textual print consists of letterpress type and handwritten script. There is a straight wreath crested by a boar's head, above a banner with Latin motto, at the top of the print. 29. [Bookplate for Jeanie Lea Southwick and Frederick Starr] Colour woodblock print. Image of a Japanese Shinto shrine, a Torii gate, overlooking landscape and a mountain, presumably Mount Fuji. Bookplate image and texts contained within a bamboo border, with bookplate text at top and bottom. 30. [Bookplate for Kathleen Reit and Francis Reit] This bookplate's design features a devil-like figure reading a book beneath a tree, by a brook. 31. [Bookplate for Lieve Van Kerkhove and Martin Jackson] In black ink, this pictorial contemporary bookplate consists of a nude female, seated in a wood boat which is too small relative to her size. The nude's knees are up, her legs spread open, and her feet and buttocks rest on the outer edges of the craft (only her left foot and left buttock are visible). Extending from inside the boat upwards into the air, and held by the nude's right hand, is a larger-than-life fountain pen. The nude's left arm descends behind her raised knee, and emerges from behind the left buttock as a hand holding the stem of a rose ; the hand and rose appearing somewhat disconnected from the rest of the body. Resting between her legs, seen as almost emerging from the pubic region, is a cat with upraised tail and paws which rest on the bow of the boat. Below the cat, on the port side of the boat is an image of a lyre. In the turbulent river which surrounds the boat, one can see additional rose blossoms floating on the surface of the water. In the background, there is an automobile crossing a stone bridge and a large stone church with steeples on the left. One can see a flock of birds flying above the church's western steeple. In the background on the right, one can see the church's cemetery. 32. [Bookplate for London Public Library and Art Museum] This bookplate’s design features a depiction of the façade of the London, Canada, Mechanics’ Institute framed by two large maple trees. A banner above, labels the print as an ex-libris and a separate compartment below the building displays several books and the originating institution’s name. 33. [Bookplate for Marjory Todd and John Todd] In black ink on white paper, a border which includes images of a book, an hourglass, and a sundial surrounds a view of a garden which contains birds and a birdbath, flowers, and in the distance, trees and a trellis. 34. [Bookplate for Martha Gold Morgan] In black ink on textured paper. At the top of the bookplate, appears a small image of a lion's head, erased, crowned and charged on a straight wreath. The lion's head, set on a white coin above a scroll with the Morgan motto, is the traditional badge of the clan. Two flowers flank the lion motif and one appears centered below the bottom compartment. These designs are set on a background displaying the silhouette of a tree and wind-blown leaves. Morgan's name is written in large black print on white background. 35. [Bookplate for McIntosh Art Gallery by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream paper. White ivy border over stippled black background. Names of John Gordon McIntosh and Wilhelmina Morris McIntosh inscribed on facing pages of book, behind which is a lit torch whose rays span out from the center of the plate. The text of the plate is on a scroll which is woven around a lyre, a symbol of harmony. 36. [Bookplate for Paramount Sweets and Tea Room by F. A. C.] Created in black ink on white paper. The text is surrounded by a border composed of a two lines, one of which is straight while the other has fluted decorations. Three lines composed of little squares separate the business's name and contact information from the list of library regulations. These regulations are followed by a final decorative line. 37. [Bookplate for Park Lending Library] Created in black ink on white paper. A simple border with a braided pattern frames the text. 38. [Bookplate for Thomae Perczel de Bonyhad and J. E. Horvath] The shield occupying the centre of the bookplate is quartered with rampant lions queue fourché on the dexter chief and sinister base, bendlets on the dexter base and a bend on the sinister chief. Two young figures act as supporters ; the one on the left holds an open book while gazing towards the sinister supporter. The shield and figures rest on an ornate panel with the ownership text. A heavy curtain is draped on top and to the left of the shield and behind it a book case is visible. At the bottom of the bookplate it is noted that the image is a reproduction of an old engraving (Nach einem alten Stich). 39. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw. Below the shield is a motto. 40. [Bookplate for Thomas Taylor by James Cole] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black) charged at the nombril point with a lion statant. The rococo escutcheon has scalloped edges at the top and is surrounded by vegetative mantling. Hidden in the mantling is the creator's signature, Cole sc.
