[Bookplate for Thomae Perczel de Bonyhad and J. E. Horvath] The shield occupying the centre of the bookplate is quartered with rampant lions queue fourché on the dexter chief and sinister base, bendlets on the dexter base and a bend on the sinister chief. Two young figures act as supporters ; the one on the left holds an open book while gazing towards the sinister supporter. The shield and figures rest on an ornate panel with the ownership text. A heavy curtain is draped on top and to the left of the shield and behind it a book case is visible. At the bottom of the bookplate it is noted that the image is a reproduction of an old engraving (Nach einem alten Stich). 2. [Bookplate for Thomas Taylor by James Cole] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black) charged at the nombril point with a lion statant. The rococo escutcheon has scalloped edges at the top and is surrounded by vegetative mantling. Hidden in the mantling is the creator's signature, Cole sc. Above the crest is a straight wreath charged with a leopard statant and below the escutcheon is a banner containing Taylor's Latin motto. 3. [Bookplate for Godfrey G. Roundell Greene by W. and A. Mussett - The Heraldic Studio] In brown ink, escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants divided per pale, or (gold) and azure (blue), three stags trippant, two over one, all counter changed. The second and third quadrants, or, with a fess, gules (red) between three olive branches, two over one. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet with mantling, below a demi-dragon crest, azure, gorged, argent (silver). 4. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 5. [Bookplate by F.A.C.] The bookplate depicts a lakeside scene in which a hotel is set among trees at the edge of the water. Prominent hills also give a sense of the surrounding landscape. This picturesque scene is framed by a border of trees. Amongst the leaves at the top of image is a scroll that reads 'Ex-Libris.' At the bottom of the image, an open book displays the words 'Rogers Rock.'. 6. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules. (Bernard Burke considers the Hercules figures to be woodmen holding a club over their right shoulders or savages, depending upon the source consulted). 7. [Bookplate for William Arnold Bromfield by William West] In black ink, a belt/garter provides the border. Within is a demi-lion atop a curved crest wreath. In its paws is a sword, with point severed. The belt contains the French motto. 8. [Bookplate for E. May Craig] Bookplate features a tall ship sailing on rough seas. Design contained within border, with bookplate owner name at base. 9. [Bookplate for Vincent Massey and Alice Massey by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on white paper. This coat of arms is described in great detail by the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada (RHSC), in their 'Members' Roll of Arms,' under the entry for the Rt. Hon. Charles Vincent Massey. They write: 'The arms argent [silver], on a chevron sable [black] between three lozenges of the last, each charged with a fleur de lis of the first, three stags' heads erased or [gold] ; on a canton azure [blue], a representation of the crest of Canada as an honourable augmentation. The crest out of an antique crown or, a bull's head sable, armed gold, charged on the neck with a lozenge argent, thereon a fleur de lis also sable.' This bookplate adheres to the design described above by the RHSC, though the 'honourable augmentation,' of the Canadian crest in dexter chief, does not appear in this escutcheon. 10. [Bookplate for Henri Rainville] This bookplate depicts a large, bespectacled rat, dressed in what appears to be eighteenth-century attire and displaying a prominent tail and whiskers. Facing away from the viewer, the rat is seated at a table in front of a window, through which the leaves of a tree can be seen. The rodent holds a quill pen and is poised to continue writing in a book that is propped open on the table with a second, closed volume. 11. [Bookplate for Park Lending Library] Created in black ink on white paper. A simple border with a braided pattern frames the text. 12. [Bookplate for Paramount Sweets and Tea Room by F. A. C.] Created in black ink on white paper. The text is surrounded by a border composed of a two lines, one of which is straight while the other has fluted decorations. Three lines composed of little squares separate the business's name and contact information from the list of library regulations. These regulations are followed by a final decorative line. 13. [Bookplate for Marjory Todd and John Todd] In black ink on white paper, a border which includes images of a book, an hourglass, and a sundial surrounds a view of a garden which contains birds and a birdbath, flowers, and in the distance, trees and a trellis. 14. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw. Below the shield is a motto. 15. [Bookplate] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross. Quarters one and four are sable (black), charged with a dove holding an olive branch upon a mountain. Quarters two and three are or (gold). Supporting the escutcheon are two lions, positioned rampant queue-fourche. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, dexter, with grate closed, indicating a peer status. Upon the helmet, is a crown with another dove holding an olive branch, along with mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 16. [Bookplate for Lieve Van Kerkhove and Martin Jackson] In black ink, this pictorial contemporary bookplate consists of a nude female, seated in a wood boat which is too small relative to her size. The nude's knees are up, her legs spread open, and her feet and buttocks rest on the outer edges of the craft (only her left foot and left buttock are visible). Extending from inside the boat upwards into the air, and held by the nude's right hand, is a larger-than-life fountain pen. The nude's left arm descends behind her raised knee, and emerges from behind the left buttock as a hand holding the stem of a rose ; the hand and rose appearing somewhat disconnected from the rest of the body. Resting between her legs, seen as almost emerging from the pubic region, is a cat with upraised tail and paws which rest on the bow of the boat. Below the cat, on the port side of the boat is an image of a lyre. In the turbulent river which surrounds the boat, one can see additional rose blossoms floating on the surface of the water. In the background, there is an automobile crossing a stone bridge and a large stone church with steeples on the left. One can see a flock of birds flying above the church's western steeple. In the background on the right, one can see the church's cemetery. 17. [Bookplate for Kathleen Reit and Francis Reit] This bookplate's design features a devil-like figure reading a book beneath a tree, by a brook. 18. [Bookplate for Hillfield School] In green ink. This textual print consists of letterpress type and handwritten script. There is a straight wreath crested by a boar's head, above a banner with Latin motto, at the top of the print. 19. [Bookplate for Frederick Claude Vivian Lane and Frederick Starr] Colour woodblock print. In black, blue, nude, red and white ink. Image of birds in water with a fire in a basket at top left and (possibly) a boat top right. 20. [Bookplate for Frederick Starr] Small square woodblock print in four colours. In black, pink, red, and light khaki ink. Bookplate is sectioned into three, with the left and bottom sections with Japanese characters.
