A simple border frames the text. 3. [Bookplate for Karl Hermann and Michael B. Kunze] In black ink on white coated paper, an image of a farmer's field. A farmer strolls away from the observer spreading seed from a side-bag. In the distance is what appears to be a town and a church steeple which is framed by radiating sunlight. In the sky above is a bird, possibly a dove. To the right of the field is a road lined with narrow trees and farmhouse situated at the base of a hill, on which possibly sits a castle. In the foreground is a piece of farming equipment and foliage frames the german expression "Und Erliches fiel aut ein gutes Land". The entire image is framed by a shaded border, rounded at the top. 4. [Bookplate for George Macaulay Booth] This is a pictorial bookplate created with black ink on white paper. In the foreground are cobblestones and an open doorway. On the left of the doorway is a desk with a lit candle and an open book on it and in the middle of the doorway is a sundial. Outside of the doorway are rolling hills with two paths: one leading to a village and the other to a bay with two boats on it. A sun sets/rises over the bay. At the bottom is a Latin inscription framed with two roses that reads: "Nec temere nec timide [neither rashly nor timidly] / Dulce Periculum [danger is sweet]." Two animals are portrayed on the right and left sides of the inscription. 5. [Bookplate for William Morgan by J. F. McCardell] Pictorial bookplate. Surrounding the text is an ornate border with ivy vines and a crest. An angel and shield are at the centre of the crest. The shield has a chevron adorned with three bees. The rest of the shield is decorated with ploughs and a cross. An inscription surrounds the crest and reads: "Cantuariensis 1853 Sigillum Provincia." At the bottom of the crest is a ribbon with "libr, prov, aour" written on it. At the bottom right is "J.F. McCardelt, Delt." and on the bottom left is "Lake and East lith. Ch. Ch." 6. [Bookplate for R. D. Morrison] A shirtless hangman standing on scaffolding with one hand points at a noose and in the other holds a book. Behind him is a tree stump with an axe in it and in the background there is a crowd and a castle on a hilltop. 7. [Bookplate for Godfrey G. Roundell Greene by W. and A. Mussett - The Heraldic Studio] In brown ink, escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants divided per pale, or (gold) and azure (blue), three stags trippant, two over one, all counter changed. The second and third quadrants, or, with a fess, gules (red) between three olive branches, two over one. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet with mantling, below a demi-dragon crest, azure, gorged, argent (silver). 8. [Bookplate for Robert A. Harrison] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a demi-lion rampant on the top part of a castle tower. The lion is wearing a crown and holding a floral wreath in its paws. There is a gentlemen and esquire’s helm surrounded by elaborately curling sable and argent mantling that extends out to each side and tapers down to the base of the bookplate. Shield is sable and charged with three demi-lions rampant, two over one. The lions are wearing crowns. The motto is below the shield printed in capitalized block white letters on a banner with curling ends. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, gothic sentence-case font at the bottom of the bookplate. 9. [Bookplate for Amelia Alexis Alvey by Eva Alvey Richards] This is a pictorial bookplate created using brown ink on thick ivory paper. A nude female, portrayed kneeling on a pedestal, gazing down at an open book. A lamp is in nude's right hand and a caduceus (symbolising medicine) is in her left hand. Hanging from the caduceus is a scroll of music with legible musical notation. Placed in front of the nude is a large open book with objects placed on the left page. These objects (from left to right) consist of: an empty retort (symbolising chemistry), a round beaker, a small closed book, a microscope (representing biology), a beaker, and a test tube. A ribbon is tucked in the right pages of the book and reads "Ex Libris." Another ribbon below the book reads "Amelia Alexis Alvey." At the front of the pedestal are four heraldic shields. From left to right are: An argent shield with a eagle displayed, tongue protruding. On the chest of the eagle is a quartered per cross shield with the first and the sinister base are argent and the sinister chief and dexter base are black. Behind the shield is a palm. The next shield is argent with a fleur-de-lis ; below this shield are two irises. The next shield is argent with a beaver on it, around the shield are maple leaves. The final shield is argent with an eagle displayed clutching in its dexter talon palm leaves and in its sinister talon three arrows. Below the shield is a single rose. 10. [Bookplate for Frances Wahlstad Cochrane] Central image is of a portrait shaped rectangular frame surrounding a chequered field suggesting a window. Only black and the natural paper color are used. There is an elaborate metal candelabra on the lower left side of the chequered field. The metal of the three candle holders is coiled counter-clockwise down towards the base, and has a roman column base. There are three burning wax candles with white streamers flowing upwards from them mounted on the candelabra. Next to the candelabra are three horizontally stacked books. They are stacked with the bottom and topped books having the spine oriented at an angle towards the right front side of the image. The middle book has the opposite orientation of the spine. 11. [Bookplate for Coddington] The bookplate is an armorial bookplate that begins with the image of a lion's head facing to the dexter covered in a fretty pattern. At the base of the head is a trefoil leaf. The head is mounted above a wreath which is itself mounted above a shield. The shield is an argent shield upon which is mounted an argent fretty. In both the dexter chief and sinister base positions are square ermine insets upon which are mounted trefoil leaves. In the sinister chief and dexter base positions are square insets upon which are mounted lion heads facing dexter. 12. [Bookplate for Robie Lewis Reid] The bookplate has below a banner with a quote from the Canterbury Tales an image of a writing desk backed by a number of books both lined up vertically, aslant and open on the desk. A banner crosses the upper portion of the image that states "EX LIBRIS", between these two words is a round shield made by a belt on which is written "PRO VIRTUTE". Within this shield is the image of a hand holding an open book on top of a braided wreath. Below the writing desk is a rectangular plate with the name "Robie Lewis Reid". 13. [Bookplate for Charles Felix Aylwin] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per fess, barry nebuly of three, argent [white] and gules [red]. Three lions, rampant, sable [black], two over one. Above the escutcheon is mantling, on which sits a curved crest wreath and a paw, erased, sable, within a Mural crown proper. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 14. [Bookplate for Thomas Aylwin] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per fess, barry nebuly of three, argent [white] and gules [red]. Three lions, rampant, sable [black], two over one. Above the escutcheon is mantling, on which sits a curved crest wreath and a paw, erased, sable, within a Mural crown proper. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 15. [Bookplate for W. Gordon Mills] In black ink on cream paper. This image depicts a nighttime scene with a single star in the sky and two evergreen trees silhouetted in front of a lake and mountains. Superimposed upon this landscape, a lyre sits next to a scroll which reads "Sonata Apassionata" (sic) and has notes from the score. The initial "M" is in the lower right hand corner as a possible signature. 16. [Bookplate for Lorne A. Pierce by Marjorie Sankey] Printed in black ink on thick yellow/brown paper with visible chain and laid lines. The facade of a building entrance is supported and surrounded by a large tree. The owner's name appears in the otherwise blank doorway and two horizontal strips on the surrounding columns appear to be blacked out by hand. 17. [Bookplate by F.A.C.] The bookplate depicts a lakeside scene in which a hotel is set among trees at the edge of the water. Prominent hills also give a sense of the surrounding landscape. This picturesque scene is framed by a border of trees. Amongst the leaves at the top of image is a scroll that reads 'Ex-Libris.' At the bottom of the image, an open book displays the words 'Rogers Rock.'. 18. [Bookplate for J. Harry Smith by William Walker Alexander] Printed in brown ink on cream paper, the bookplate shows a man in the dress of a 19th-century agricultural laborer against a background of clouds and a landscape of fields, trees, and three buildings (possibly a house, a barn, and an out building). The man holds a basket in his left hand and sows seeds with his right hand. In the left foreground, a lamb frolics next to an open book. The right page of the book reads 'LAMB'S / TALES.' Underneath the open book appears a manuscript upon which rests an inkwell and a quill pen. The date '1942' is written in the bottom left corner of the manuscript. To the right of the book appears a mailbox with 'R. R. / 4' written on the door. On the side of the mailbox appear the words 'Knoll Farm / J. HARRY SMITH.' Below and to the right of mailbox appears an inverted triangle with the initials 'W W' at the base of the triangle and the initial 'A' at the top of the triangle. 19. [Bookplate for Frederic Lumb Wanklyn] In brown ink on white paper, a flying duck within a darkened circle is at the centre of the bookplate. It appears to be affixed to a post, on top of which there is a sign that reads 'Ex Libris F.L. Wanklyn.' The post is standing in a marsh. 20. [Bookplate for Dufferin School John Frothingham Library] Printed in navy ink, a geometric border surrounds the text printed in three fonts. The coat of arms of Montreal is raised in red with accompanying banners. The shield is topped with a crown and features a red saltire with four charges between the arms: a rose, thistle, clover, and beaver.
