[Bookplate] Image shows both the recto and verso of the sample bookplate sheet produced by the Globe Wernicke Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The sheet contains two sample bookplates. The one on the left, in colour, shows two white swans on a water-lily spotted lake. On the distant shoreline, one can see among the green foliage the rooftop and chimney of a home. The image is framed by an oval floral border on a yellow and white background. The second sample bookplate, on the right, shows a pirate on a beach, either burying treasure or digging it up. On the pale blue water of the horizon, a ship sits in wait. The sample bookplate sheet is divided into four sections by perforated lines. The recto also includes a mail order form for more sample bookplates and a booklet on "The World's Best Books". The verso includes the reverse of the mail order form, complete with place for a stamp, and also an advertisement for Globe-Wernicke bookcases. 122. [Bookplate for Leida Eerme and A. Lavdovsky by A. Lee] In black and blue ink, an image of a butterfly in the centre, and a flower in the bottom right corner. Curving black lines border the four corners. Text is written vertically on the wings of the butterfly. 123. [Bookseller's Ticket for John Mercier McMullen] In black ink on blue paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a triple border with decorative corners surrounding black text in roman and italic type. The bottom right corner of the bookseller's ticket has been ripped away and replaced with white paper. 124. [Bookplate for William Martin] In black ink on cream paper, a double border surrounding a coat of arms. The coat of arms is Argent two bars Gules six bezants 3 and 3, with ornate mantling especially to the upper right and left of the shield, surrounding the crest of an eagle displayed over a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a draped manner with the Latin motto and below that is the name in a Gothic script. 125. [Bookplate for W. Gordon Mills] In black ink on cream paper. This image depicts a nighttime scene with a single star in the sky and two evergreen trees silhouetted in front of a lake and mountains. Superimposed upon this landscape, a lyre sits next to a scroll which reads "Sonata Apassionata" (sic) and has notes from the score. The initial "M" is in the lower right hand corner as a possible signature. 126. [Bookplate for Karl Hermann and Michael B. Kunze] In black ink on white coated paper, an image of a farmer's field. A farmer strolls away from the observer spreading seed from a side-bag. In the distance is what appears to be a town and a church steeple which is framed by radiating sunlight. In the sky above is a bird, possibly a dove. To the right of the field is a road lined with narrow trees and farmhouse situated at the base of a hill, on which possibly sits a castle. In the foreground is a piece of farming equipment and foliage frames the german expression "Und Erliches fiel aut ein gutes Land". The entire image is framed by a shaded border, rounded at the top. 127. [Bookplate for George Francis Steele by E. J. W.] In black ink on white or cream paper it depicts a nude male figure riding a Pegasus in the upper left surrounded by a swirl of stars, planets, and other astronomical bodies. Another nude, winged male figure in the lower right holds a quill pen in his right hand and in his left, the end of a ribbon on which "EX LIBRIS / AD ASTRA" is written. A dark dome, possibly representing a planet, occupies the lower left. There are blue smudges, possibly ink, across the lower third of the bookplate. 128. [Bookplate for William Brophy] In black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of an architectural, Egyptian-themed border with lotus flowers all around, a Sphinx in the lower right, and Egyptian wall art in the lower left. Below the school name and above the location is a monogram made of the letters CSV. Five fonts used for the text, with spaces for hand-written annotations naming the prize recipient. 129. [Bookplate by Owen Staples] In black ink on white paper, a clock is pictured in the top right corner (possibly a grandfather clock), and a table stands in the foreground. On the table there are several items: a framed portrait of a man, a few books, a vase holding some flowers, and a paint palette and some brushes. There is a lyre on either side of the name at the bottom. 130. [Bookplate for Collège de Saint-Laurent] In black ink on white paper, at the top of this bookplate one finds a banner bearing the text “BIBLIOTHÈQUE DU COLLÈGE DE SAINT-LAURENT” [French: Library of Saint-Laurent College], below which sits the coat of arms of Quebec. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Or (gold) on a fess Gules (red) between two fleurs de lis in chief Azure (blue), and a sprig of three leaves of maple slipped Vert (green) in base, a lion passant guardant Or (gold). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “JE ME SOUVIENS” [French: I Remember]. On either side of the coat of arms of Quebec are shining five-point stars. Below the coat of arms of Quebec on the left is the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “SPES UNICA” [Latin: Our Only Hope]. To the right of the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross appear the words “EX LIBRIS.” Further to the right is a third coat of arms, likely the coat of arms of the Collège de Saint-Laurent. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon party per fess, first party per pale Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver) ; Gules (red), charged with a feather quill, Argent (silver) ; second Azure (blue), a pale Or (gold). A banner dividing the shield per fess bares the acronym “C. S. L.” A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto of the Collège de Saint-Laurent: “PALMA DE CRUCE” [Latin: Victory by the Cross]. Below the three coats of arms appears a beaver facing left below which rests two crossed branches of sugar maple tied with a ribbon. At the bottom of the bookplate appear the words “MONTRÉAL, CANADA.”. 131. [Bookplate for Brockville Public Library] In black ink on white paper, the bookplate consists of the seal of Brockville, incorporating scenes of ships, trains, beehives, and a beaver, in the upper right corner and black text. 132. [Bookplate for L. M. Stauffer by Stanley Harrod] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield or escutcheon Argent (silver). On dexter side, a twelve-point etoile. On sinister side, a dexter arm holding a cup. A trefoil Argent protrudes from the middle base of the escutcheon. The front facing, barred helm bears the crest of a bearded man from the waist up holding a cup in his right hand. The helm is surrounded by mantling. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the text 'S H / L. M. Stauffer / 1917'. 133. [Bookplate for Clark. William Mortimer] In black ink, a circular belt/garter provides the border. Within is a cat, sejant rampant, upon a straight crest wreath. The belt contains the English motto. 134. [Bookplate for Margarete Voigt and Michael B. Kunze] In black ink, an image of a young grecian woman wearing a flowing, pleated gown. In her arms, she holds a vase into which pours water from a hole in a wall. The wall is elaborately decorated, and contains what appears to be the image of an owl in the lower left corner. A heavy and elaborate frame borders the entire image. 135. [Bookplate for Arnin Neuensundschen] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a round wreathed textual area in the centre. Behind it is a hearth-type frame with a ring hanger on the left and right side. There is a curtain strung up through the left ring, across and through to the right ring. At the centre-top of the image is the face of an angel. At the base of the image is a globe, partially covered by a clothe, and next to it are a book and a bust. 136. [Bookplate for George Grey] In black ink, this bookplate contains an escutcheon with a barry of six pieces, argent (silver) and azure (blue), and a bend gules (red). On the bend are three roundlets bezant (gold). A diadem crest containing a swan rising with wings addorsed and elevated, and a trefoil on its breast. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 137. [Bookplate for Lieve Van Kerkhove and Martin Jackson] In black ink, this pictorial contemporary bookplate consists of a nude female, seated in a wood boat which is too small relative to her size. The nude's knees are up, her legs spread open, and her feet and buttocks rest on the outer edges of the craft (only her left foot and left buttock are visible). Extending from inside the boat upwards into the air, and held by the nude's right hand, is a larger-than-life fountain pen. The nude's left arm descends behind her raised knee, and emerges from behind the left buttock as a hand holding the stem of a rose ; the hand and rose appearing somewhat disconnected from the rest of the body. Resting between her legs, seen as almost emerging from the pubic region, is a cat with upraised tail and paws which rest on the bow of the boat. Below the cat, on the port side of the boat is an image of a lyre. In the turbulent river which surrounds the boat, one can see additional rose blossoms floating on the surface of the water. In the background, there is an automobile crossing a stone bridge and a large stone church with steeples on the left. One can see a flock of birds flying above the church's western steeple. In the background on the right, one can see the church's cemetery. 138. [Bookplate for Y. Hoffmann and J. E. Horvath] In black ink, this small bookplate includes what appears to be an abstract letter 'H'. 139. [Bookplate for Emil Eerme and A. Lavdovsky by O. Kubse] In black ink, watercolour style scene of hills and trees reflected on the surface of a lake. Solid right side and bottom border, and rounded, soft left and top border. Text written vertically along right side border. 140. [Bookplate for Sir Robert Peel] In black ink. Armorial bookplate. Argent (silver) three sheaves of as many arrows proper, banded gules (red). On a chief azure (blue) a bee volant, or (gold). Crest of a demi-lion rampant argent, gorged with a collar azure, charged with three bezants, holding between the paw a shuttle, or.
