[Bookplate for David Stewart Erskine] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered per cross, and contains an inescutcheon. The first quarter, azure (blue), contains three garbe, two over one. The second quarter is itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, azure with an or (gold) riband and six cross crosslets fitchy sable (black) ; the second and third quarters are argent (silver), with a pale, sable. The third quarter of the escutcheon is also itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, or, with a fess in checky (alternate squares of metal and fur), argent and azure ; the second and third quarters are azure, containing three garbe, two over one. The fourth quarter, argent, with six bars, gemelles (doubles), contains a lion rampant, sable and proper. The inescutcheon, gules (red) contains an eagle, displayed and proper, and a ray of sun issuing out of the dexter corner. Atop the escutcheon is the coronet of an earl, topped by a grated helmet (peer), dexter. Upon the helmet is a curved crest wreath and a dexter cubit arm holding a club. From either side of the crest flows elaborate mantling. The escutcheon is accompanied by two supporters. The dexter supporter is an ostrich, while the sinister supporter is a griffin. Below the escutcheon and the supporters is a banner containing the English motto. 42. [Bookplate for John Darby] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a chevron, argent (silver), with the lower part a fillet. Upon the escutcheon are three sheaves of wheat (possibly corn, garbe), two over one . A military medal is at centre chief, with the word "NILE" immediately below. Within the chevron, an anchor each at dexter and sinister, with a naval crown at centre. Above the escutcheon is a crest of a sheaf of wheat (or possibly corn, garbe) and an anchor, upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 43. [Bookplate for John Leveson Gower] This heraldic bookplate consists of a escutcheon, divided per cross or quarterly. Quarters one and four are argent (silver) with bars, gules (red) and charged with a cross patonce, sable (black). Quarters two and three are azure (blue) charged with leaves, two over one. The escutcheon is charged with an inescutcheon, argent, charged with a human hand, gules, at centre, which is a symbol of knighthood or baronet. Upon the escutcheon is a grated helmet positioned three-quartered, indicating peer (duke, baron, marquess, earl) status. Upon the helmet is a crest of a mountain lion or wolf, upon a straight wreath. The escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate mantling, and beneath the escutcheon is the bookplate text within an embellished border. 44. [Bookplate for Frank Marx Etting] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing a chevron, gules (red). On the chevron are three roundlets, argent. The escutcheon is bordered by mantling, and crested by a dexter cubit arm holding a sword. Impaled on the sword is a boar's head. The boar's head is said to represent unflinching courage and fierceness on the battlefield. In Irish literature, it was symbolic of aggression and savegery, and symbolized the Devil. 45. [Bookplate for Edward Loveden] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a bend, cottised vert (green) and sable (black). The escutcheon is charged with four sinister hands, roughly at centre chief, sinister, dexter, and centre base. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a heraldic tiger, sejant (sitting position). 46. [Bookplate for Charles Manby by Suffield] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, with a stylized bordure. The dexter quadrant, gules (red), is charged with a lion rampant and a chief, argent (silver), with three martlets. The sinister quadrant, gules, is charged with four etoiles, two over two, and contains a canton, coloured ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), in the dexter chief of the quadrant, covering two-thirds of the etoile in that location. The canton represents the banner of the ancient Knights Banneret, which is an honourable order which has become extinct. It was on order conferred upon persons, recognized by a king or general, that had perfomed some heroic act on the battlefield. The escutcheon is crested by a straight wreath and a lion passant guardant, holding what appears to be a millrind, sable (black) in its dexter paw. The millrind is placed in the centre of a grindstone to protect the hole in the centre from the action of the axis ; it is a charge frequently used by persons connected with agriculture. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 47. [Bookplate for Edward Steane] This bookplate, in black ink, consists of a straight crest wreath, on top of which is a rock and eagle, wings addorsed and elevated. Below the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. The image is bordered by a single line frame. 48. [Bookplate for Edward Steane] This simple textual bookplate contains the originator's name in black ink, and also includes the location. Slight discolouration of text on surname. 49. [Bookplate for William Hulme] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are parted per pale, with dexter half argent (silver) and sinister half with a barry of eight argent and vert (green). The quarters are charged with two bendlets, one invected. Quarters two and three are argent, parted per chevron, charged with two chaplets and a lion's head erased, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a viscount crown, without the cap or fur, and above the crown is a helmet, positioned in three-quarters profile, indicating the status of peer. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a cock with a heraldric rose, standing upon a trumpet. Elaborate mantling and banner containing Latin motto radiates out from the helmet, and two elephants support the shield. The elephant at dexter is charged with another heraldic rose, and the elephant at sinister is charged with another chaplet. Below the shield is a banner, with name of bookplate owner. 50. [Bookplate for Alex Thistlethwayte] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon or (gold), a bend azure (blue), charged with three pheons of the field. The rococo vegetative mantling around the upper part of the escutcheon includes a straight wreath charged with a demi-lion. The lion is holding a pheon and situated above a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon several cherubs drink, trumpet and hold aloft an ermine trimmed cloak. The cloak serves as a backdrop for a framed compartment displaying the originator's name. 51. [Bookplate for Thomas Jenings] In black ink. Argent, a chevron, gules (red), three cages two over one. Gryphon, couped, atop straight crest wreath, wings addorsed and elevated, cage hanging from open beak. On the dexter and sinister sides, two figures, nude, outside hands hold flowered mantling, inside hands point to chevron. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 52. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules. (Bernard Burke considers the Hercules figures to be woodmen holding a club over their right shoulders or savages, depending upon the source consulted). 53. [Bookplate for Laurence A. Waldron by Waller] In red ink. This bookplate displays a classical theme. A neoclassical urn, draped with a laurel garland serves as the back-drop for the escutcheon. The escutcheon, argent (silver), is charged with three bull's heads caboshed, situated two over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger sejant. This component is encircled by the originator's Latin motto. The urn is set upon a pedestal with an oval background, framed by a garland. At the base, between the oval background and laurel garland frame, appears the name and location of the creator. 54. [Bookplate for George Wilkins] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with two swords saltier, and on a chief argent (silver) are three mullets pierced, sable (black). Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a demi-gryphon, rampant, regardant, segreant, gules, holding aloft a sword. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originator's Latin motto. 55. [Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 56. [Bookplate for George Murray Humphry] Bookplate design consists of text with lined border surrounding. 57. [Bookplate for Winfred Overholser] This bookplate's design is a pictoral scene of a tall ship at sea, with gales of wind blowing at the sails and water. Bookplate text at base. In black ink. 58. [Bookplate for Spencer Walpole] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), with a fess sable (black), charged with three cross crosslets, or. Top and bottom sections are charged with a chevron, sable. Entire shield is placed within a circle, with bookplate owner's name circling at the border. 59. [Bookplate for James Phinney Baxter] In black ink. This ex-libris includes a portrait of the originator in the upper-right-hand corner, identified by his name and geographic locale. The remaining two-thirds of the bookplate consist of a depiction of the interior of a library. In a section spanning the base of the bookplate is a cursive, printed motto and a hand-written book number. The printed text is drawn from the last two lines of the second stanza of a poem composed by Baxter, entitled, "The Library." 60. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or.
