[Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 22. [Bookplate for Jenkins] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a furry lion passant reguardant standing atop a castle tower. The castle tower is above a crest-wreath. Elaborate, curling, feathery black and white mantling extends from the top of the shield and expands out along the sides. The shield is divided per pale. The left section has a white background with black dots and is charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. The right section of the shield is charged with a bird perched on a tree branch growing out of the ground. There is no background except for the branch and ground that is lighter on top and darker at the bottom. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon below the shield. There is shading on the ends of the ribbon. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in a more stylized, paler, capitalized, black serif font underneath the motto. 23. [Bookplate for John Bradford Pengelly] A heraldic bookplate executed with brown ink on white paper. Three stags are depicted on the shield. 24. [Bookplate for John Hamilton by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on cream paper. One motto is printed on a ribbon with ends that extend to two points at the top of the bookplate. Motto is printed in capitalized, serif block letters. Below that motto is a crest featuring a leafy tree growing out of a crown. The crown’s points are rounded and leafy. The base of the crown is decorated with horizontal diamonds. The tree trunk grows through a picture frame with a saw attached to the center. The free is growing through this frame/saw object and has extensive, dense foliage. The entire crest sits atop a twisted wreath. The shield has extended points to the top left and right and the bottom curls to a point. The shield is sable and argent, divided per quarterly. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with three white flowers, two over one. The flowers have distinct round centers and five individual, separate petals. The top right and bottom left section are argent and charged with a Viking-style ship with three oars, a flag pointing to the left at the front and rear of the ship, and a tall mast. The sail is rolled up on the mast in a horizontal line. Four lines extend from the sail down to the ship. There is a flag at the top of the mast, with two lines extending down to the sail. Curlicue mantling decorates the shield from the base upwards. A second motto is printed on a ribbon with two pointed ends at the base of the shield. The text is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. The name of the bookplate owner is printed below this motto in thin, sentence case, cursive font. In the bottom right corner the name of the bookplate creator is printed in small, italicized, sentence case black font. 25. [Bookplate for Joint Board of Theological Colleges] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate banned frame with leaf sprigs houses the text. At the bottom of the frame, the letters MTD are incorporated amid a sprig. The outside of the frame is decorated with a repeating leaf pattern. The corners of the frame are four shields. The top left tablet shield is dotted (gold) and charged with an undecipherable center object. An open book sits atop the shield. The top right tablet shield is horizontally lined (azure) and charged with a downward facing bird (dove) at the chief and an open book at the base. A tree sits atop the shield. The bottom left Norman pointed shield is horizontally lined (azure) with a cross (argent). It is charged with an open book with writing over the center of the cross. A coronet sits atop the shield. The bottom right spade shield is blank (argent) and is charged with an anchor. A mitre sits atop the shield. 26. [Bookplate for King Edward VI Grammar School] Black ink on cream paper. Supporters are a lion rampant on the left side and a dragon on the right. Shield is quartered. Three fleur de lis in the upper left and lower right hand corners and three lions passant, guardant in the upper right and lower left hand corners. Belt with motto surrounds shield. Above is the crown of the king of England. Text appears in a bordered area below. 27. [Bookplate for Library of Diocesan Theological College] Black ink on cream paper. In the upper-portion rests the Library of Diocesan Theological College seal. Within the oval-shaped seal are two shields (one in front of the other) with an anchor on the front of the more forward shield. Above the shield is a Western-style mitre. On the perimeter of the seal is Latin phrasing. Directly under the seal is an information line, followed by the title of the library and location city in English text. At the very bottom are two additional unfilled information lines. 28. [Bookplate for Library of Diocesan Theological College] Black ink on white paper. There is italicized black text with a dotted line at the top of the bookplate. There is an almond shaped design with double lined black borders. The border contains capitalized black sans serif font. In the center are two shields. A white shield with an anchor partially covers a black shield. A bishop’s hat sits atop the shield. A motto is printed in the banner. Below more italicized text is printed with a dotted line. There are several lines of stylized black gothic fond, one line of sans serif capitalized black font, and then one final line of italicized text with a dotted line. 29. [Bookplate for M. Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a lion statant guardant standing atop a ledge decorated with a white ribbon and five black diamond shapes. The lion has a collar with two black geometric decorations. There is a Gentlemen and Esquires helm with mantling. There is no shield. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon in lower case, black, gothic font. The name of the bookplate owner is written below in sentence case cursive. 30. [Bookplate for Michael B. Kunze] Black ink on white paper. Oval shield. Right side displays knight's arm on a field azure and left side shows lion rampant on a field gules. Text surrounds shield inside a wider oval. Contributors include Menny. 31. [Bookplate for Michael B. Kunze] Black ink on white paper. Arms at centre of plate. Shield supported by lions. Shield shows a man holding a rosary and two sticks on a yellow (or) field. Three helmets rest on a crown above shield. There are three crests. The first is an eagle displayed, the second is the man in the shield and the third is a hat. Writing appears at the bottom of the plate. 32. [Bookplate for Nicholas Garry] Printed in black ink on off-white paper. In the centre is a family shield, decorated with with a chevron pattern in solid black and white ground with a spotted pattern. A ‘V’ shape in the centre of the shield intercepts and counterchanges the chevron colours. Above this is an extended arm in armor holding a circular disc that repeats the pattern on the shield. 33. [Bookplate for Otto Braun and Michael B. Kunze by F. Nickel] In brown in on tan paper. Shield in upper left hand corner above which is mantling and a closed helmet in profile, indicating equires and gentlement. Three fusils vert on centre of shield. Bottom and right hand side of plate decorated with scales, compass and triangle. Artist's mark outside bottom right hand corner.`. 34. [Bookplate for R. Mackay Fripp by H. A. W.] Within a multi-lined border is a depiction of crumbled Greek architecture, with fallen columns in the foreground. The name of the originator is written on a banner at the bottom of the frame, and below that is a small heraldic shield with a bull. The motto is written on a small banner that passes behind the shield. 35. [Bookplate for Robert Cochrane Barclay] This bookplate consists of a gules (red) escutcheon with an argent (silver) chevron. On it are three cross formy, two over one. Atop the shield is a helmet in profile, beaver down, topped by a crest wreath on which is a sword, or possibly a dagger. From the sides of the helmet flows elaborate mantling which curls up towards the sword and down to the base of the shield. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 36. [Bookplate for Sir Arthur Robinson] Heraldic bookplate. An argent lozenge shaped shield with an argent chevron and three stags. At the top of the shield is an open helmet facing forward (signifying a knight) on top of which is a crown and a fourth stag. Around the border of the shield is the motto for the Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George, "auspicium melioris aevi" (token of a better age). Above the shield is a ribbon with the motto "qualis ab incepto" (the same as from the beginning). The badge of the order, which is a cross of fourteen points, is suspended from the bottom of the shield. 37. [Bookplate for Sir Charles Tupper] Crest is a dog (i.e. loyalty and guidance). Helm is a Baronets and Knights. On the shield at the middle chief are two boars (i.e. courage and savagery) ; at the fess point are three shells(i.e. water, love, St. James the Apostle, pilgrimage and travel). 38. [Bookplate for Sir Lawrence Palk by Ezekiel Abraham Ezekiel] In black ink: Sable, an argent eagle displayed, an argent bordure engrailed ; at the precise middle chief, the inesceutcheon of a baronet (argent, a hand gules) ; surmounted by a wreath of argent and sable, the crest a demi-globe or hemisphere ['semi-terrestrial globe of the northern hemisphere'], an eagle rousant, wings displayed and elevated ; motto on a ribbon below the shield. The bottom right corner of the bookplate was torn away and has been replaced with a light paper. 39. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw. Below the shield is a motto. 40. [Bookplate for Thomas Philip Earl de Gray] This heraldic bookplate is elaborately engraved in Chippendale style. The escutcheon is counterchanged per fess, its primary quarterings (at top left and bottom right) consisting of a barry of six, argent (silver) and azure (blue). The quarter at mid-top is vert (green), divided per chevron, or (gold). The quarter is also charged with three stags statant, two over one. The top left quarter is argent (silver), with a saltier, azure. The quarter is also charged with a roundlet, argent. The bottom left quarter is a gyrony of eight pieces, or and sable (gold). The quarter at mid-bottom is argent, divided per fess, gules (red) with a fillet in the lower part, azure. The quarter is also charged with three rings, gules on both the upper and lower parts. The Chippendale escutcheon is surrounded by two detailed dragons, the dexter supporter with its tailed nowed. Above the escutcheon is a coronet of earl status, and below the shield with Latin motto within.
