[Bookplate for Susie Maria Denton Massey] The image of a large house sitting above a wooded riverbank is possibly that of Dentonia Park Farm, the estate and working farm that Hart Massey built for his wife Susie in 1889. Massey's name is flanked by two lions bearing shields. 42. [Bookplate by Eiichi Hirose] The picture is of a stone pillar amongst a garden with a yellow frame outline. The pillar has several symbols which represent the same image found on a 5 yen coin. There is a hole in the centre which holds water for a person to drink from using the yellow bamboo cup sitting on the top of the pillar. 43. [Bookplate for Lyman Tower Sargent] This bookplate is executed in brown ink on white paper. In the background is a framed picture of a ship. There is also a globe and a range of books supported at each end by bookends of monks sitting and reading. In the foreground is an open book with a ink well and quill. 44. [Bookplate for A. W. Robertson by Tom Eaglin] This bookplate is executed in coloured ink on white paper. The colours consist of varying shades of green and bronze. In the foreground there is an image of a nude man with his head resting upon his hand, as if deep in contemplation. He is sitting upon a wood-like stump which turns into the earth at the bottom of the image. This image is most likely meant to imitate "The Thinker", a statue by Auguste Rodin. 45. [Bookplate for Commercial and Technical High School] This bookplate is printed in black ink on white paper and shows a tabletop, with an oil lamp sitting on a pile of books next to a inkwell with quill. A bubble issuing from the spout of the lamp contains the name of the school, and a sheet of paper extending off the tabletop contains the book information. 46. H.] This bookplate's design features a man sitting in an armchair, with his feet propped on a hassock, reading and smoking a pipe. The walls of his study are lined with book shelves and covered with works of art and seem to indicate his taste, connoisseurship and acumen. 48. [Bookplate for Charles S. Dixwell by G. M. McCall] This heraldic bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon, argent (silver) divided per chevron, gules (red). Within the escutcheon are charges, two over one, of fleur-de-lis. A steel helmet, closed, situated en profile dexter(denoting an esquire rank), sits upon the escutcheon, with a stylized cross within. Sitting upon the helmet is a clenched paw (possibly lion) grasping a bird claw with four talons. The escutcheon is surrounded by mantling with banners both above and below, 'EX LIBRIS' in the above banner (along with a small fleur-de-lis dividing the two words). The lower banner has owner name and place within. Entire image is surrounded by an elaborate rectangle border, with fleur-de-lis at each corner. 49. [Bookplate for Edmund F. Bourke by T. Welch] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross. The dexter chief and sinister base sections contain a gules (red) cross on an or (gold) background. At the dexter chief of each cross is a lion rampant. The dexter base and sinister chief sections are each divided per pale, with an argent (silver) dexter side and a gules (red) sinister side. In the middle of these two sections is a lion rampant surrounded by three fleur-de-lis, two over one. Sitting atop the shield on a curved crest wreath is a cat guardant with leash. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 50. [Bookplate for George de Pafsow] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with a greyhound courant (in motion), running on ground. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a greyhound couchant (sitting position). Below the escutcheon is bookplate owner's name. 51. [Bookplate for Edward Loveden] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a bend, cottised vert (green) and sable (black). The escutcheon is charged with four sinister hands, roughly at centre chief, sinister, dexter, and centre base. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a heraldic tiger, sejant (sitting position). 52. [Bookplate for Roderick J. Barman by Margaret Noble] This pictorial bookplate was created using black ink on red paper. The bookplate is in the shape of a Greek vase and portrays Clio the Muse of History sitting in a chair reading a scroll. In front of Clio is a basket of scrolls, on if which is inscribed with "M.N. 1966." [Greek text inscribed on chair and at the bottom of the bookplate reads "The Art so long, the Life so short."] 53. [Bookplate for Jac Balfour Paul Ado] Using black ink on white paper, the background of this pictorial bookplate portrays a window frame and windowsill. The top left side of the window is latticed, below which is an image of a rocky mountain and forest above which the sun is rising or setting. On the right side of the window frame is a shelf with three books. Leaning against the shelf is an unravelled scroll reading "In Soli / tudine / Solamen" [comfort in solitude]. Below this text is a lit lamp. On the windowsill are three figures. From left to right, the first figure is standing, nude and holding a comedy mask to its face. The second nude is sitting holding a cape over its shoulder (on the cape is a heraldic emblem: The shield is argent with a rampant lion).
