[Bookplate for Edward Loveden] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a bend, cottised vert (green) and sable (black). The escutcheon is charged with four sinister hands, roughly at centre chief, sinister, dexter, and centre base. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a heraldic tiger, sejant (sitting position). 2. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 3. [Bookplate for John Hamilton by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on cream paper. One motto is printed on a ribbon with ends that extend to two points at the top of the bookplate. Motto is printed in capitalized, serif block letters. Below that motto is a crest featuring a leafy tree growing out of a crown. The crown’s points are rounded and leafy. The base of the crown is decorated with horizontal diamonds. The tree trunk grows through a picture frame with a saw attached to the center. The free is growing through this frame/saw object and has extensive, dense foliage. The entire crest sits atop a twisted wreath. The shield has extended points to the top left and right and the bottom curls to a point. The shield is sable and argent, divided per quarterly. The top left and bottom right sections are sable and charged with three white flowers, two over one. The flowers have distinct round centers and five individual, separate petals. The top right and bottom left section are argent and charged with a Viking-style ship with three oars, a flag pointing to the left at the front and rear of the ship, and a tall mast. The sail is rolled up on the mast in a horizontal line. Four lines extend from the sail down to the ship. There is a flag at the top of the mast, with two lines extending down to the sail. Curlicue mantling decorates the shield from the base upwards. A second motto is printed on a ribbon with two pointed ends at the base of the shield. The text is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. The name of the bookplate owner is printed below this motto in thin, sentence case, cursive font. In the bottom right corner the name of the bookplate creator is printed in small, italicized, sentence case black font. 4. [Bookplate] This heraldic bookplate is printed on cream paper with dark brown ink, and consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with three church bells, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a helmet at three quarters profile in esquire form, with mantling radiating from it. Above the helmet is a straight wreath crested by the head of a lion in profile. Below the crest is a banner, with Latin motto within. 5. [Bookplate] A lion rampant holding a stemmed (slipped) rose above the entwined letters G or C and H, through which is woven a banner with the Latin phrase. The bookplate is rendered in some kind of red ink, which is raised from the paper both from embossing (visible on the back) and a way that the ink itself is raised from the paper. 6. [Bookplate for Hope Innes] Printed in black ink on buff paper, the bookplate features a woman with a basket of flowers reading a book. The background includes blooming climbing flowers on a fence, statues, and a sundial. Ribbons of containing text appear at the top and bottom of the image. 7. [Bookplate for Lionel Damer] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided barry of six pieces, nebule, argent (silver) and gules (red), and a bend, engrailed, azure (blue). At the precise middle chief is a crescent, the symbol of the second son. The escutcheon also contains an inescutcheon, divided per cross. The first quadrant, argent, contains an unknown symbol, possibly a garbe, sable (black). The fourth quadrant, also argent, contains two of the same symbol. The second quadrant, divided per fess, or (gold) and azure (blue), contains two swans with wings displayed. The third quadrant is the same, except it contains only a single swan. The crest is an oval frame containing a talbot's head in a crown. Above the crest is floral mantling which extends down both sides of the escutcheon. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 8. [Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 9. [Bookplate for John George Mortlock by Charles William Sherborn] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon and crest framed by an elaborate circular bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a fret, azure (blue), and contain a chief, azure, charged with three fleur-de-lis, argent ; the second and third quadrants, sable (black), are charged with three annulets, argent, two over one, and contain a chevron, argent and engrailed. The escutcheon is crested by a closed dexter helmet resting upon the second quadrant, topped by a wreath and a lion sejant, with dexter paw elevated and resting upon a fleur-de-lis, argent. From either side of the helmet flows mantling and a banner which contains the Latin motto. The bordure also contains text. 10. [Bookplate for William Martin] In black ink on cream paper, a double border surrounding a coat of arms. The coat of arms is Argent two bars Gules six bezants 3 and 3, with ornate mantling especially to the upper right and left of the shield, surrounding the crest of an eagle displayed over a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a draped manner with the Latin motto and below that is the name in a Gothic script. 11. [Bookseller's Ticket for W. C. Chewett and Company] In black ink on white or yellow paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a double border surrounding black text. 12. [Bookplate for Jenkins] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a furry lion passant reguardant standing atop a castle tower. The castle tower is above a crest-wreath. Elaborate, curling, feathery black and white mantling extends from the top of the shield and expands out along the sides. The shield is divided per pale. The left section has a white background with black dots and is charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. The right section of the shield is charged with a bird perched on a tree branch growing out of the ground. There is no background except for the branch and ground that is lighter on top and darker at the bottom. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon below the shield. There is shading on the ends of the ribbon. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in a more stylized, paler, capitalized, black serif font underneath the motto. 13. [Bookplate for Jac Balfour Paul Ado] Using black ink on white paper, the background of this pictorial bookplate portrays a window frame and windowsill. The top left side of the window is latticed, below which is an image of a rocky mountain and forest above which the sun is rising or setting. On the right side of the window frame is a shelf with three books. Leaning against the shelf is an unravelled scroll reading "In Soli / tudine / Solamen" [comfort in solitude]. Below this text is a lit lamp. On the windowsill are three figures. From left to right, the first figure is standing, nude and holding a comedy mask to its face. The second nude is sitting holding a cape over its shoulder (on the cape is a heraldic emblem: The shield is argent with a rampant lion). The third figure is sitting with its right leg crossed over the left leg, clothed in a judge/lawyer's wig, clothed in robes and holding a large open book in its lap. 14. [Bookplate by G. P. V. Akrigg] Created using black ink on white paper (glue painted on back). The image is of a desk facing a window with two panes (each divided into eight sections) opening onto a view of an inlet and three mountains. A totem pole is behind the sinister pane. Drawn curtains are on both the sinister and dexter sides of the window. Above the window is a ribbon inscribed with "ALL LEARNING BUT AN ART TO LIVE WELL." On the desk, from left to right, is a painter's palette with two paint brushes, an open book, a ruler, ink well, fountain pen, pencils, card catalogue drawer, index card, small closed book, and a bust of Shakespeare. Below the bust are inscribed the initials "G.P.V.A." 15. [Bookplate for Amelia Alexis Alvey by Eva Alvey Richards] This is a pictorial bookplate created using brown ink on thick ivory paper. A nude female, portrayed kneeling on a pedestal, gazing down at an open book. A lamp is in nude's right hand and a caduceus (symbolising medicine) is in her left hand. Hanging from the caduceus is a scroll of music with legible musical notation. Placed in front of the nude is a large open book with objects placed on the left page. These objects (from left to right) consist of: an empty retort (symbolising chemistry), a round beaker, a small closed book, a microscope (representing biology), a beaker, and a test tube. A ribbon is tucked in the right pages of the book and reads "Ex Libris." Another ribbon below the book reads "Amelia Alexis Alvey." At the front of the pedestal are four heraldic shields. From left to right are: An argent shield with a eagle displayed, tongue protruding. On the chest of the eagle is a quartered per cross shield with the first and the sinister base are argent and the sinister chief and dexter base are black. Behind the shield is a palm. The next shield is argent with a fleur-de-lis ; below this shield are two irises. The next shield is argent with a beaver on it, around the shield are maple leaves. The final shield is argent with an eagle displayed clutching in its dexter talon palm leaves and in its sinister talon three arrows. Below the shield is a single rose. 16. [Bookplate for Mary Katharine Black by Thoreau MacDonald] This pictorial engraving was created using black ink on white paper and portrays an island with two wind-swept trees with a rising/setting sun on the horizon. 17. [Bookplate for George Macaulay Booth] This is a pictorial bookplate created with black ink on white paper. In the foreground are cobblestones and an open doorway. On the left of the doorway is a desk with a lit candle and an open book on it and in the middle of the doorway is a sundial. Outside of the doorway are rolling hills with two paths: one leading to a village and the other to a bay with two boats on it. A sun sets/rises over the bay. At the bottom is a Latin inscription framed with two roses that reads: "Nec temere nec timide [neither rashly nor timidly] / Dulce Periculum [danger is sweet]." Two animals are portrayed on the right and left sides of the inscription. 18. [Bookplate for Dickens Fellowship] This pictorial bookplate features green ink on green paper. Morning-glories create a floral frame to the text, at the bottom of which is a picture of Dickens. 19. [Bookplate for Frances Wahlstad Cochrane] Central image is of a portrait shaped rectangular frame surrounding a chequered field suggesting a window. Only black and the natural paper color are used. There is an elaborate metal candelabra on the lower left side of the chequered field. The metal of the three candle holders is coiled counter-clockwise down towards the base, and has a roman column base. There are three burning wax candles with white streamers flowing upwards from them mounted on the candelabra. Next to the candelabra are three horizontally stacked books. They are stacked with the bottom and topped books having the spine oriented at an angle towards the right front side of the image. The middle book has the opposite orientation of the spine. 20. [Bookplate for Maija Calite by Richards Skrubis] Image is of a side profile of a woman (possibly originator) against a black and white background.
