[Bookplate for Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an academic escutcheon in the heraldic-style. The escutcheon is parted per fess, indented, in chief gules (red), charged with two open books with initialled text. These charges mimic the two books found on the University of Toronto's crest. On the fess, argent (silver), appears a maple bough with three leaves. Though situated differently, this symbol may be drawn from the maple bough with three leaves which appears on the coat of arms of the province of Ontario. The base, azure (blue), is charged with a lamp of knowledge. Above the escutcheon is a crown, which resembles that of George IV, also found on the coat of arms of the University. The crown was included in the University crest to indicate the provision of the institution's royal charter by George IV in 1827. Surrounding the escutcheon is a banner containing the name of the university faculty which issued the bookplate. The illustration identifies itself as an "Ex Libris" and below, cites the originating library. The text and illustration are surrounded by a rectangular frame ornamented with garlands. 22. [Bookplate for Herbert Fairbairn Gardiner] Black ink on cream paper. Thin black border surrounds the text and image on the bookplate. At the top of the bookplate, within the border, is printed black gothic text. Below the text is a portrait photograph of the bookplate owner showing a balding white man with a large moustache in a black suit with a white shirt and bow tie. The photograph has a thin black border. Below the photograph is large, black, sentence case font. Underneath this text is the same font in a smaller size. 23. [Bookplate for Art Gallery of Toronto by Alexander Scott Carter] Blank ink on white paper. Border consists of a thin black line, then a thicker black line, then an alternating black and white dashed line, and finally a thin black line. Capitalized black font with the words separated by geometric dots surrounds a black square. The black square is decorated on the inside with floral motifs. There is a circle inside the square with black text and black borders. Inside the circle are some more floral motifs, as well as two shields. The top shield is divided per pale. The left hand side is quartered with alternating designs of 3 horizontal arrows and vertical triangles. On the right hand side, the top third features vertical stripes, while the bottom two thirds are charged with three black stars. The lower shield is divided in a similar way and has the same stars and stripe design on the right hand side. The left hand side has alternating designs of fish, waves, and lions passant. Between the two shields is a horizontal rectangular box with black text inside. At the bottom of the bookplate is another rectangle with a border decorated with a swirling black and white motif. There is also an inner black border, inside of which is more black text. 24. [Bookplate for H. P.] Pictorial bookplate created with black ink on white paper. At the centre of the bookplate is the monogram HP behind which text is written. A wreathe surrounds the text. 25. [Bookplate for Pretre L. Bertrand] An ornate border of foliage, flowers, ribbons, and musical instruments surrounds the text. Below the printed text is a manuscript note. The back of the bookplate is covered in marbling, presumably lifted from a book when the bookplate was removed. 26. [Bookplate] Black on light gray paper, a decorative border surrounds text. Handwritten text at top and bottom. 27. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 28. [Bookplate for W. J. Diamond] A simple border of lines and leaves surrounds the text. Each line of text is printed in a different font. Each line is also separated by a simple illustration. 29. [Bookplate for Otto Koerner by K. M. S.] Pictorial bookplate. Be-speckled and reading Cherubs are portrayed above the text. Below the text is a flower as well as stars, insects, and chicks. 30. [Bookplate for Douglas Battersby] In black ink on yellow paper, the bookplate consists of an ornate decorative border surrounding the text. The text is a Gothic typeface, except for the city. There are significant stains around the edges of the bookplate. 31. [Bookplate for Free Public Library] The bookplate is printed in black and red ink and features text printed in three fonts. A decorative border surrounds the text. 32. [Bookplate for Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal] Printed in black ink on cream paper, an intricate border evocative of a tabernacle and constructed of geometric repeating patterns topped with a cross surrounds the text. The next line is in large, black, capitalized serf font with decorative first letters for reach word. The next line of text has decorative arrows on either side and is printed in small, black, capitalized sans serif font. The next line is in slightly larger black, capitalized, serif font. Underneath is small, italicized thin black serif font with a dotted line for a handwritten number. There is jagged line separating the above font from a short description of the lending terms, printed in black times new roman font. 35. [Bookplate for B. L. Mitchell by L. S.] Pictorial bookplate illustrating a Scottie dog and a cat sitting on a table at an open window. Below the table is text. 36. [Bookplate for Fritz Rohde and Michael B. Kunze] Black ink on tan paper. Shows a young man in 18th century dress bending over an open book. There is a second book between his knees. He stands on the text. 37.
