The monk sits facing to the left, holds a stylus with his right hand and grasps his chin with his left hand. The image is framed in a thin double-line border with curled corners on the right side. The left side of the border is decorated with an ornate pattern of stylized, scrolled leaves. The text is written above and below the image of the monk in Gothic font. 2. [Bookplate for Rufus Hawtin Hathaway by J. E. MacDonald] Printed in black ink on cream-coloured paper. An interior scene depicts a robed and tonsured monk sitting in a study room. The monk is seated with his head resting in his right hand on the far side of a lectern that holds three open, vellum-bound manuscripts. Behind the monk, an open wooden cupboard is topped by a niche shelf with many closed, bound vellum manuscripts and a human skull. To the far left, there is a recessed bench seat at a diamond paned window containing several objects, including a crucifix, an hour glass, and another manuscript.
