[Bookplate by G. P. V. Akrigg] Created using black ink on white paper (glue painted on back). The image is of a desk facing a window with two panes (each divided into eight sections) opening onto a view of an inlet and three mountains. A totem pole is behind the sinister pane. Drawn curtains are on both the sinister and dexter sides of the window. Above the window is a ribbon inscribed with "ALL LEARNING BUT AN ART TO LIVE WELL." On the desk, from left to right, is a painter's palette with two paint brushes, an open book, a ruler, ink well, fountain pen, pencils, card catalogue drawer, index card, small closed book, and a bust of Shakespeare. Below the bust are inscribed the initials "G.P.V.A." 2. [Bookplate for Marjorie Vivien Smith] A winged horse in flight among stars at night framed by a border with stars and planets is depicted. Bookplate still affixed to a portion of the book cover that has been cut out ; book is "The Voluntary worker in the social services. Report of a committee jointly set up by the National Council of Social Service and the National Institute for Social Work Training under the chairmanship of Geraldine M. Aves" (Beverly Hills, Calif., Sage Publications: 1969). 3. [Bookplate for Colin E. Henderson by L. V. S.] Pictorial bookplate. A scene portraying a bookshelf and open window (overlooking trees) is enclosed in a circular frame. Around the frame are oak and maple branches. At the bottom of the circle is a frame in which is inscribed "Colin E. Henderson." The artist's name and date are found at the bottom-centre of the bookplate. 4. [Bookplate for Thomas Venables Scudamore] Lion's gamb from a crest-coronet. Helm is Gentlemen and Esquires. Three stirrups. Motto of scuto amoris divini is possibly a play on the family name scut + amor = Scudamor. 5. [Bookplate for William Griffin and Florence Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Brown ink on cream paper. The bookplate has a perforated border with rounded corners. At the top left and right corners are flowers with four square petals and five leaves extending below. The floral decorations are quite simple, featuring only small lines. Between the two flowers is curling text in sentence case followed by five leaves with stems curling to the left and the tip of the leaves curling to the right. In the centre of the bookplate an open book. The book has enforced corners and a clasp on the cover. On the open left page is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. On the open right page is a cat sitting on a crest wreath. A link from a chain extends from the base of the book’s spine to attach to a sign with a thick white border. Atop a speckled background is capitalized and lower case font with stylized serif accents. Two links of chain are attached to this sign from below in the left and right corners. Between the chains are stylized curling, accents meeting in a decorative feature in the centre with a leaf extending downwards. Text is printed on the left and right hand side of the leaf. There is a handwritten note in pencil in the bottom right hand corner. 6. [Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 7. [Bookplate for Emil Eerme and A. Lavdovsky by V. Toots] Stylized cursive letter E inside white circle on a black background formed by one thick letter E, and one thick backwards letter E. 8. [Bookplate for V. C. Scudamore] A light in the upper left corner casts rays of light on the sillouette of a person reading. 9. [Bookplate for V. D. H. K. Rozsnyay and J. E. Horvath by S. J.] Black ink on tan paper. This bookplate portrays a young nude boy holding a lily stem. 10. [Bookplate for Elsie V. Heney by Clifford H. Brown] Black ink on buff paper. The image, in silhouette, depicts a child reading at the window next to a vase of flowers. The text appears under the image. Pictorial. 11. [Bookplate for David King by B.] Pictorial bookplate. A floral border (in blue, red, and gold) surrounds the bookplate text. At the bottom are both the creator's initial "B" and publishing information (Ludgate Circus House, H.V. Capsey, London, E.C.4). 12. [Bookplate for Iser Steiman M.D. by A. N. T.] Black ink on cream paper. Man, no shoes, chest bare, book hugged against torso with left arm, while right arm holds open a book held at eye level. Sunlight illuminates the man. Deciduous tree in foreground. Hills in background. 13. [Bookplate for Dezsgyessy Bottlik, Margit Bottlik, and J. E. Horvath] Black ink on light grey inked background. A woman looks at rose that she holds on her right hand. She is wearing a long dress with a black bodice and bouffant white sleeves. The skirt has a flower pattern and the underskirt is white with a bottom ruffle. She sits on a sofa covered with big cushions with different patterns. One of the cushions comes out of the image frame. There is a window behind the figure with plant on the sill. The text boxes above and below the image are adorned with garlands. The artist seal with the initials RS is on the lower left corner. 14. [Bookplate for Edgell Wyatt-Edgell] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, and containing an inescutcheon. The first and forth quadrants of the escutcheon are sable (black) with a fess, dancette and argent (silver), three eagles displayed, two over one and or (gold), and chief, or. The second and third quadrants are argent, with a sable chevron containing three roundlets bezant (gold), and cinque foil, two over one and gules (red). The inescutcheon is checky, or and gules, and contains a lion rampant guardant. Atop the escutcheon is a dexter helmet, closed with mantling flowing horizontally from its top. Above the mantling are two further crests. The dexter consists of a demi-lion rampant, embattled in or and sable, on a wreath, holding an inverted arrow in its dexter paw. The sinister crest consists of a demi-lion rampant on a wreath, holding the long stem of a cinque foil, gules, in both its paws. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 15. [Bookplate for Barbara Joyce Chandler] In dark blue ink on light blue paper. Primary bookplate design consists of a ship crested upon waves, with three figures within. The figures are young girls, two reading books and the other holding a book. Beneath the waves is bookplate text, with small illustrations of a castle, knight and fish. 16. [Bookplate for Frederick Claude Vivian Lane and Frederick Starr] Colour woodblock print. In black, blue, nude, red and white ink. Image of birds in water with a fire in a basket at top left and (possibly) a boat top right. 17. [Bookplate for Frank McIver] Ornate border surrounding the text, all in black ink on tan paper with some pink staining. Manuscript notes in brownish ink. 18. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 19. [Bookplate for Louis C. de V Carrier] Two lines of plain text with a dotted line under the last line. 20.
