[Bookplate for Beatrice Eleanor Paget by T&H Sc. and A. S.] This pictorial bookplate, created using brown ink on white paper, portrays Wilton House (Wilton, England) built during the 17th century and the seat of the Earl of Pembroke. It is believed that Sir Philip Sidney wrote Arcadia at Wilton House. The picture is framed with vertical columns and garlands. The creator of the bookplate is listed as [T & H / Sc. A.S.]. 2. [Bookplate for Winifred Baker] This bookplate, black ink on ivory paper, consists of a number of books standing up right on a flat surface. In front of the standing books is a book left open, and a candle stick with candle alight. From the candle's flame, light radiates out in all directions. Running along the left border are a series of vertical lines of varying widths, and along the right border are a series of ten small symbols. 3. [Bookplate for Edmond Bohy] This bookplate features brown ink on thick, coated paper. The image is of a man, mouth open, wearing a feathered fedora and a shirt with a broad collar [perhaps a jester collar] within a border consisting of dots and lines. 4. [Bookplate by F.A.C.] The bookplate depicts a lakeside scene in which a hotel is set among trees at the edge of the water. Prominent hills also give a sense of the surrounding landscape. This picturesque scene is framed by a border of trees. Amongst the leaves at the top of image is a scroll that reads 'Ex-Libris.' At the bottom of the image, an open book displays the words 'Rogers Rock.'. 5. [Bookplate for Thomas B. Greening] Printed in black ink on cream paper. In the centre of the image, a heraldic shield is depicted. The shield is decorated by two thick intersecting lines with reversed scalloped edges, forming a cross shape. The lines are incised with a pattern of thin, close-set vertical lines and contrast against a solid background. Below the shield, a banner with chevron-ed edges contains the phrase ‘A TOUTE FORCE.’ Above the shield, the head and neck of a horse is shown in profile, facing left, with its mouth open and mane flowing. 6. [Bookplate for Henry Torre] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon which is slightly askew, being tilted from the central vertical axis of the image. The escutcheon is parted per fess. In dexter chief sable (black), charged with a crescent above and a tower below, a bordure vair. In middle chief, azure (blue), embattled and counter-embattled, argent, with three sable roundlets. Above the partition charged with two stags proper tripping, and below with one stag proper, tripping. In sinister chief, argent, two bars, gules (red), in canton gules, charged with cross Moline, or (gold). In dexter base, barry of six pieces, or and azure, in canton, argent, charged with a chaplet. In middle base, sable (black), lion rampant. In sinister base, argent, sable with three lozenges, gules above, and four below. The rococo vegetative mantling above the escutcheon finishes on either side with a tassel and includes, at its center, a straight wreath charged with a gryphon passant situated atop a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's Latin motto, with his name printed below. 7. [Bookplate] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon tilted from a central vertical axis. The escutcheon is gules (red), charged with an ornate vegetative design, vert (green), and a chief, or (gold), are three cross-crosslets fitchy, gules. Above the escutcheon is a collar, wrapped with a pair of stirrups and set upon a backdrop of two intersecting laurel garlands. The garlands form an 'x' pattern wrapping around the escutcheon and the charges above it, partially framing them. The collar is charged with a straight wreath, which in turn, is charged with a courtly-styled woman, clutching two stag antlers. Below the escutcheon is a manner displaying the originators Latin motto. 8. [Bookplate for Art Gallery of Toronto by Alexander Scott Carter] Blank ink on white paper. Border consists of a thin black line, then a thicker black line, then an alternating black and white dashed line, and finally a thin black line. Capitalized black font with the words separated by geometric dots surrounds a black square. The black square is decorated on the inside with floral motifs. There is a circle inside the square with black text and black borders. Inside the circle are some more floral motifs, as well as two shields. The top shield is divided per pale. The left hand side is quartered with alternating designs of 3 horizontal arrows and vertical triangles. On the right hand side, the top third features vertical stripes, while the bottom two thirds are charged with three black stars. The lower shield is divided in a similar way and has the same stars and stripe design on the right hand side. The left hand side has alternating designs of fish, waves, and lions passant. Between the two shields is a horizontal rectangular box with black text inside. At the bottom of the bookplate is another rectangle with a border decorated with a swirling black and white motif. There is also an inner black border, inside of which is more black text. 9. [Bookplate for B. Hallé by L. P.] Black ink on white paper. Thin, double-lined black border with rounded corners surrounds the bookplate. The background is filled in with vertical thin black stripes. At the top of the bookplate is printed capitalized sans-serif block text filled with horizontal black stripes. Some of the text is obscured by the top of a feather quill, which extends from the top right corner down to the bottom left corner. On top of the center of the quill is an open scroll with the top and bottom ends still rolled. The bookplate creator’s initials are printed in black sans-serif font on the curl of the paper at the top of the scroll. Cursive sentence case black font is printed on the scroll. The bottom of the scroll just grazes the bookplate author’s name, which is printed in the same large sans-serif block font with the horizontal stripes that is used for the text at the top of the bookplate. 10. [Bookplate for Arthur Lowndes] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate features an oval shape with a thin, pale black border. At the top of the bookplate is a rounded section with a base that goes down a point towards the middle of the bookplate. The image depicts a procession of men entering what appears to be a brick church. The man at the front of the procession is carrying a cross. There is foliage growing on the church exterior. The men are entering an arched doorway and there are windows above and to the right of the doorway. To the right of a procession is a small metal fence with a brick pillar, behind which is a tall, leafy tree. Other trees are silhouetted in black on the far horizon. The base of the image is decorated with leaves and flowers with many petals. Below, the background is a speckled grey wall and there are two crests, one of the left and one on the right. On the left, the crest features a tall leafy tree on a crest-wreath. To the right of the tree is an argent shield charged with three sable fleurs-de-lis, two over one. At the base of the tree trunk, a ribbon billows out to the right with text printed in capitalized, black, sans serif font. The shield is argent with a bend. The bend has a border of two thin sable lines and is charged with three argent leaves. Below the shield, the mottos is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. On the right, the crest features a sable erased dragon’s head floating above a crest-wreath. The shield is all argent with a lozengy field. There is an argent canton in the upper left corner of the shield charged with a smaller version of the sable erased dragon’s head from the crest. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. Below the crests is a large fireplace. The mantle is covered with books. There is a lamp on the left side of the mantle and a vase filled with plants on the right side of the mantle. Alongside the fireplace, books are stacked on shelves on the left and right-hand side. The mantle itself is decorated with simple vertical black lines. There is a simple iron grate in front of a roaring wood fire. On the left and right hand side of the fireplace itself are square shaped decorative features. There are also fireplace implements on either side of the fireplace. On the floor in front of the fire are a dog and cat. The dog is black and white and is lying down on the left side of the bookplate. The cat is also black and white and is sitting on the right side of the bookplate. Below the cat and dog, the bottom portion of the bookplate features a dense floral decoration. On top of the decoration is a banner with curling ends upon which the bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized, serif, black font. 11. [Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 12. [Bookplate for L. Emile Grothé by Aimé Dufesne] Black ink on white paper. Border has white outlines, shaded for a three-dimensional effect and is filled in with thin black lines. The top and bottom sides of the border indent in the middle with squared corners. The left and right sides of the border indent in the middle with rounded corners. The top half of the bookplate has diagonal black lines extending wider from the centre. The top left corner features a person wearing a feathered headdress and a sash holding arrows in their left hand and a bow in their right hand. They are standing on a decorative ledge connected to the border and sitting atop of an elaborate curlicue. The right corner has the same curlicue and ledge and a person in a long coat and striped hat holding a pouch stands atop it. Between the two figures is an open book. The bottom of the top half of the bookplate contains half a round map of the world surrounded by a thick border of the same style as the overall bookplate border. The owner’s motto is written across the map’s border in thin, capitalized, sans-serif font. A rectangular border of the same design sits in the centre of the bookplate. The top of the border features large, captitalized, serif block font. The font is white with a black background and white stripes surrounding that background. On either side of that text are half circle decorations in a vertical stack between two thin white borders. The centre of the rectangle within the borders has a grey background with capitalized, sans-serif block font printed on top. The font is black with a white outline and dark shading. Two shields hang below the rectangle on the left and right side. The shield on the left is argent with sable dots per fess. The top third of the crest is charged with two fleurs-des-lis. The central portion of the crest, featuring sable and argent stripes. is charged with a lion passant guardant. The bottom third of the crest is charged with three maple leaves with connected stems. The shield on the right is per pale consisting of sable and argent stripes and argent with sable dots. The left side is charged with two lions passant that are argent with sable dots. The right side is charged with a lion sejant erect and eight hearts, each of which are sable and argent striped. Between the two crests, hanging from the central rectangular feature, is a checkered black rectangle with white borders on the left, right, and bottom sides. White curlicues extend from the left and right sides. Similar curlicues, leafy decoration, and black strip adorned with small circles extend from the bottom of the rectangle. The background of the bottom half of the bookplate not covered with other decorative features has the same black stripes as the top half. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate are four books each, spines facing out. Next to the books on the left is a black inkwell with two feather quills in it. Next to the inkwell is a beehive on a wooden platform surrounded by five bees. On the right of the beehive is an oil lamp with a bright flame burning. Outside the bottom border, inside the indent, the bookplate creator’s name and date of creation is printed in thin, black, sentence-case, serif font. 13. [Bookplate for Dundas Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on grey paper. A border made up of small squares surrounds the title of the library, its opening hours, and its borrowing policies. Beneath the title of the library is a dividing line made up of vertical lines. Beneath the row listing the library’s business hours is a grid categorizing the section, shelf, book number, and class, with several hand-written notes in faded black ink. 14. [Bookplate for Huddleston] Black ink on cream paper. Vertical, rectangular, thick black border surrounds vertically stacked letters that are linked into each other. The letters alternative between white with a black border and all black sans-serif font. 17. [Bookplate for William Swift Keyser] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features an esquire helm with elaborate mantling extending out along both sides of the bookplate. Extended, feathery wings rise out of the top of the helm. The helm sites directly on the shield, which is divided per pale and per rounded chevron. The three parts of the shield are different colour. The upper left portion is argent, the upper right side portion has vertical sable lines, and the rounded bottom portion has horizontal sable lines. Sitting atop the rounded bottom portion is a king. The man is sitting cross-legged and holds a sword in his left hand and a rounded vessel with a cross on top in his right hand. The man is wearing a crown and a cape. He has long hair and a small beard. Below the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, bold, serif font. Underneath the ribbon, text is printed in sentence case, thin, cursive font followed by a line of small black dots. There is a black ink smudge on the bottom right corner of the bookplate. 18. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso. 19. [Bookplate for Evans Bros.] Black ink on cream paper. At the top of the bookplate sits the title and address of the library. Beneath this is a header for the library rules, written in Germanic font. Beneath this section sits a horizontal dividing line, followed by the five individual rules and policies. This section is divided into two columns. On the left are headers for each type of rule or policy, and on the right sits the body of each. Between the two columns is a vertical dividing line. 20. [Bookplate] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate border with curlicues in each corner houses the title, location, and loan policies of the library.
