| Notes | Steane, Edward (1798-1882) was a Baptist minister, born 23 March 1798 in Oxford. He was one of several children of Samuel Steane (1771-1832), a wine and spirit merchant, and his wife, Emma (1772/3-1840). The family was closely associated with the New Road Baptist Church. Edward Steane was baptized at Abingdon about 1817, and set apart for the ministry by the New Road Church. He entered Bristol Baptist college in 1819, and in October 1821, went to Edinburgh University, but did not finish his studies. In May of 1823, he preached at Camberwell for a short time, then agreed to stay on as pastor. The church, which was in need of assistance, was formally constituted on 16 December 1823. During his life he was joint secretary and chairman of the Baptist Union. and helped found the Bible Translation Society. He served as governor of the Congregational Mill Hill School from 1928, and in 1841 was awarded an honorary DD from the University of Waterville, Maine. He is best known for his involvment in the formation and early progress of the Evangelical Alliance. Steane married Mary Stevenson, a granddaughter of the Revd Abraham Booth, in February 1834. Together the couple had five children. Mary Stevenson died in 1862, and Steane again married on 3 November 1864 to Eliza Pigeon. Steane. He died on 8 May 1882 and was buried at Norwood cemetery. UBC Library has one work by Rev. Edward Steane, entitled "The Rights of Conscience: An Argument Occasioned by the Educational Clauses of the Factories' Bill, " (London: G. and J. Dyer, 1843) which can be found at AW1.R-5346 N. 33450.
