[Bookplate] Black on beige paper, a decorative border surrounds text. Manuscript notation in purple ink in upper right. 42. [Bookplate for Congregational College of Canada] There is an elaborate border with geometric designs and stylized flowers, and within this at the top of the bookplate is the crest of the Congregational College of British North America. Under the crest, the words 'Library of the Congregational College of Canada' are written in several different fonts, with the words 'Congregational College' the largest and most prominent. Underneath this is a space for information to be entered, although it has been left blank. 43. [Bookplate for Congregational Theological Institute] The border has a border of lines with a more elaborate border 'wrapped' around it. The corners are adorned with small flowers. Within the border, the word 'Canadian' is in a bold font, and 'Congregational Theological' is in Gothic typeface. 44. [Bookplate for Castle Lending Library] The name of the lending library is in large bold letters at the top of the bookplate, and underneath is listed the address, hours, and telephone number. Underneath this text block there is a thick black line, and a listing of the terms, time limit and renewal conditions. Underneath this is a single black line, the words 'Please Protect Your Book in Wet Weather' and another single black line. At the bottom of the bookplate is space for the library to stamp a return date. 45. [Bookplate for Dunham Methodist Sunday School] Black ink on cream paper. A thin, vine-like border houses the text. No content lies outside of this border. Inside, the name of the school library is centered in the upper portion. A fillable number section is located in the central portion, with the number 216 erased out and the number 56 written to the right of it in blue ink. Beneath this section is a small printed hand icon pointing towards a note instructing the user of the library usage policy. In the portion of this note for the librarian to write the number of days until it’s due is written the number 14 in pencil. 46. [Bookplate for City of Halifax and Citizens’ Free Library] Black ink on cream paper. A coat of arms for the city of Halifax is printed in the upper-portion of the plate. Within this coat of arms stands a sailor on the left, with his hand placed on the crest containing a Belted Kingfisher on a grassy mound. Directly above the crest is a masoned Sable containing a sprig of mayflower. To the right is a fisherman holding a codfish by its head. Both figures and the crest are standing upon heraldic ribbon containing Latin phrasing within it. This portion is followed by the title of the library and three sections with horizontal dotted entries lines for entering the class, book, and accession number. In the lower right corner is a handwritten note in pencil. 47. [Bookplate for City of Halifax and Citizens’ Free Library] Black and blue ink on cream paper. A coat of arms for the city of Halifax is printed in the upper-portion of the plate in blue ink. Within this coat of arms stands a sailor on the left, with his hand placed on the crest containing a Belted Kingfisher on a grassy mound. Directly above the crest is a masoned Sable containing a sprig of mayflower. To the right is a fisherman holding a codfish by its head. Both figures and the crest are standing upon heraldic ribbon containing Latin phrasing within it. This portion is followed by the title of the library in Germanic lettering and the name of the town in cursive. 48. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 49. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Green ink on white paper. Thin green border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded green font. Below the letters is text in pseudo-gothic sentence-case font. Underneath that text is a small green circle with two lines extending from its left and right. Below is text in the previous pseudo-gothic font in a larger size. There are several images underneath the text. There is a line of three images: an open book with curling pages in the center with a six-pointed star on either side. The left star has a plus sign in the middle and the right star has a question mark in its center. Three more images are below: a green owl on a branch in the center with lit oil lamps on either side. The lamps each point inwards towards the owl and sit on thin green lines. Below the images is a thin green oval border that is straight on the top and bottom sides. Inside is curling thin green text sitting on a thin green line. At the right end of the line is another thicker perpendicular green line dividing the oval into two uneven sections. 50. [Bookplate for Queen Elizabeth Hospital] Black ink on dark-yellow paper. A thin ornate border composed of curved lines houses the name of the institution in bold capital letters. 53. [Bookplate for Art Gallery of Toronto by Alexander Scott Carter] Blank ink on white paper. Border consists of a thin black line, then a thicker black line, then an alternating black and white dashed line, and finally a thin black line. Capitalized black font with the words separated by geometric dots surrounds a black square. The black square is decorated on the inside with floral motifs. There is a circle inside the square with black text and black borders. Inside the circle are some more floral motifs, as well as two shields. The top shield is divided per pale. The left hand side is quartered with alternating designs of 3 horizontal arrows and vertical triangles. On the right hand side, the top third features vertical stripes, while the bottom two thirds are charged with three black stars. The lower shield is divided in a similar way and has the same stars and stripe design on the right hand side. The left hand side has alternating designs of fish, waves, and lions passant. Between the two shields is a horizontal rectangular box with black text inside. At the bottom of the bookplate is another rectangle with a border decorated with a swirling black and white motif. There is also an inner black border, inside of which is more black text. 54. [Bookplate by Eiichi Hirose] The classical image of a cat puppet or doll is central to the image. It has green and blue coverings with white kanji script, blue/black eyes and black patches on its forepaws. Its foreground is placed at the right and it moves backwards towards the left part of the bookplate. 55. [Bookplate by Eiichi Hirose] The image is a box image of two houses, one, the lower house angling towards the lower left, overlapping the other which stands in the center of the page. The first house is coloured in beige and has writing within it. The second image has a brown colored background and a black outline of a horse is contained within it. 56. [Bookplate by Eiichi Hirose] The central image is of a long horn sheep with blue curving horns. It is resting on all four legs and is facing to the right. It is also portrayed with orange mouth, nose and ears. 57. [Bookplate for George Macaulay Booth] This is a pictorial bookplate created with black ink on white paper. In the foreground are cobblestones and an open doorway. On the left of the doorway is a desk with a lit candle and an open book on it and in the middle of the doorway is a sundial. Outside of the doorway are rolling hills with two paths: one leading to a village and the other to a bay with two boats on it. A sun sets/rises over the bay. At the bottom is a Latin inscription framed with two roses that reads: "Nec temere nec timide [neither rashly nor timidly] / Dulce Periculum [danger is sweet]." Two animals are portrayed on the right and left sides of the inscription. 58. [Bookplate for J. E. Horvath by Gabriella Krisztimkovich] The bookplate belongs to J. Eugene Horvath who is a famous bibliographer living in Vancouver. The central image is of a Canadian mapleleaf. The left portion of the leaf has a gilt inlaid ceramic plate with a quill pen over it signifying a love of writing. The central portion of the leaf has a set of mountains signifying the Vancouver area with a camera below it signifying a love of photography. The right portion of the leaf has an image of a Hungarian King St. Ladislas The central portion of the leaf has an image of the Buda side of Budapest and shows the central castle and churches lying in relief above the Danube river. This portion of the bookplate indicates the fact that Horvath was born in Hungary and emigrated to Canada. 59. [Bookplate for Maxwell K. Heap] There is an elaborate border on this bookplate beginning with a rolled barred fillet with fleur-de-lis at each corner. Within this border are three additional black fillets the middle one is slightly thicker with alternating black and white bars suggesting a rope like pattern. The central image is of a large book overlaying a lighted torch behind it. Birds wings sit below the book supporting it. 60. [Bookplate for Elizabeth Rogers] This bookplate is executed in black ink on crème paper, and is rife with heraldic and pictorial imagery denoting peace, freedom, and benevolence. The center image is one of peace, as it contains a great tree spreading its branches over meadows and pastures under the rays of a setting or rising sun. This is flanked by standards bearing roses. The heraldic imagery is placed above the scene of peace, as if resting on the tree. A shield in the center contains a mullet over purple in the lower half, and roses over black in the upper half. It is topped by a closed helmet out of which springs what is most likely a fox.
