[Bookplate for William H. Hutton] In black ink. The bookplate design features a ducal coronet with three arrows pointing downward towards a straight wreath. 42. [Bookplate for Mechanics Institute of Montreal] In black ink. The seal of the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal is located above with pre-printed lines for library information below. The seal contains an escutcheon quartered per saltire with argent (silver) and gules (red) backgrounds. The chief quarter features a train car, the sinister quarter a couped arm with hammer, the base quarter a lever, the dexter quarter a telescope. At the fess point the institution's motto appears. 43. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules. (Bernard Burke considers the Hercules figures to be woodmen holding a club over their right shoulders or savages, depending upon the source consulted). 44. [Bookplate for Thomas Taylor by James Cole] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black) charged at the nombril point with a lion statant. The rococo escutcheon has scalloped edges at the top and is surrounded by vegetative mantling. Hidden in the mantling is the creator's signature, Cole sc. Above the crest is a straight wreath charged with a leopard statant and below the escutcheon is a banner containing Taylor's Latin motto. 45. [Bookplate for Caldwell] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon, containing three sable (black) piles arranged in chief, and four alternating wavy bars of gules (red) and vert (green). Each pile contains a roundlet. Each roundlet has wavy barry of seven pieces, plate (silver roundlet) and hurts (blue roundlet). The crest is a demi-lion rampant grasping a broken scimetar, all proper on a wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 46. [Bookplate for G. H. O. Mayer by S. Co.] In black ink. Two lions rampant reguardant flanking a sword on a black background of symetrically drawn vines. A decorative scroll in the top portion of the plate features the originator's name. The bottom right-hand corner of this plate is torn off. 47. [Bookplate for Sir Lawrence Palk by Ezekiel Abraham Ezekiel] In black ink: Sable, an argent eagle displayed, an argent bordure engrailed ; at the precise middle chief, the inesceutcheon of a baronet (argent, a hand gules) ; surmounted by a wreath of argent and sable, the crest a demi-globe or hemisphere ['semi-terrestrial globe of the northern hemisphere'], an eagle rousant, wings displayed and elevated ; motto on a ribbon below the shield. The bottom right corner of the bookplate was torn away and has been replaced with a light paper. 48. [Bookplate for Otto Braun and Michael B. Kunze by F. Nickel] In brown in on tan paper. Shield in upper left hand corner above which is mantling and a closed helmet in profile, indicating equires and gentlement. Three fusils vert on centre of shield. Bottom and right hand side of plate decorated with scales, compass and triangle. Artist's mark outside bottom right hand corner.`. 49. [Bookplate for Godfrey G. Roundell Greene by W. and A. Mussett - The Heraldic Studio] In brown ink, escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants divided per pale, or (gold) and azure (blue), three stags trippant, two over one, all counter changed. The second and third quadrants, or, with a fess, gules (red) between three olive branches, two over one. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet with mantling, below a demi-dragon crest, azure, gorged, argent (silver). 50. [Bookplate for Lacombe Vincent by Carles Imprint Editor] Pictorial bookplate. An illustrated border surrounds text in the center. Angels are on the top right and left hand corners. The left side angel holds a wreath in one hand and the right side angel holds a book in one hand. The angels also hold a banner that stretches between them with the name of the awarding organization on it. Below the angels is a border of morning glories. The plants meet at the bottom center of the plate, growing from beneath a pile of books and a globe. Four fonts used for the text, with spaces for hand-written annotations naming the prize recipient. 51. [Bookplate for High School of Quebec] Printed in black ink on blue paper, the book plate features a decorative border around the text. 52. [Bookplate for Imperial Cotton Co. by R&M] Printed in black ink on cream coloured paper. The scene depicts dark-skinned laborers working in a cotton field. In the right-hand side of the foreground, a laborer holds a large wicker basket full of cotton on their head. To the left are two other large wicker baskets full of cotton. At least four other laborers recede into the depth of the field. They wear loose, baggy clothing and wide-brimmed hats. In the background is a wide, low brick factory building with smokestacks on the far left and one low, square tower with a flag in the middle. Below this scene is the insignia of the Dominion Crown and the text identifying the Imperial Cotton Co. 53. [Bookplate for Alex Watters] Printed in black ink on cream or tan paper the book plate features a bare-chested female figure in an art deco style holding a foil in her right hand and wiping the blade with a cloth in her left hand. Behind the figure's head is a sun burst design. The figure wears an elaborate headpiece as well as an involved crescent moon necklace and a flowered sarong. To the left of the figure, the words 'Tis / DEATH / To / KEEP' appear vertically. To the right of the figure appear the words 'EX / LIBRIS' horizontally and the words 'ALEX / WATTERS' vertically. 54. [Bookplate for Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal] Printed in black ink on cream paper, an intricate border evocative of a tabernacle and constructed of geometric repeating patterns. 55. [Bookplate for Rufus Hawtin Hathaway by J. E. MacDonald] Printed in black ink on cream-coloured paper. An interior scene depicts a robed and tonsured monk sitting in a study room. The monk is seated with his head resting in his right hand on the far side of a lectern that holds three open, vellum-bound manuscripts. Behind the monk, an open wooden cupboard is topped by a niche shelf with many closed, bound vellum manuscripts and a human skull. To the far left, there is a recessed bench seat at a diamond paned window containing several objects, including a crucifix, an hour glass, and another manuscript. The entire scene is framed by a border that contains the owner’s name and motto, as well as decorative vine-leaf scrollwork. 56. [Bookplate for Thomas Troughton] Printed in black ink on white paper, in the upper left of the ex libris appears the crest of a lion erased issuing from a straight wreath. At the base of the lion's head is a veil sable with two pellet over one plate. To the right is the crest of a stag statant issuing from a straight wreath. Below the two crests appears a banner bearing the motto 'CARPE DIEM.' At the bottom of the ex libris appears the name of the owner, 'The Revd. Thomas Tronghton.'. 57. [Bookplate for William Leaf] Printed in black ink, the book plate features the crest of William Leaf: A dove rising, resting the dexter claw on a leaf, on a torse. 58. [Bookplate for C. Gordonsmith] Printed in black ink, the bookplate features a harbor scene including a town waterfront, ships, sailboats and row boats. The Union Jack can be found in the corner of the flags off the stern of the two ships in the foreground. A banner identifies the location, and a gothic font is used to identify the owner of the book. Pictorial. 59. [Bookplate for W. J. M. Jones] The book plate owner's name and city are printed in black ink on cream paper in one script-style font. 60. [Bookplate for J. E. Horvath by Gabriella Krisztimkovich] The bookplate belongs to J. Eugene Horvath who is a famous bibliographer living in Vancouver. The central image is of a Canadian mapleleaf. The left portion of the leaf has a gilt inlaid ceramic plate with a quill pen over it signifying a love of writing. The central portion of the leaf has a set of mountains signifying the Vancouver area with a camera below it signifying a love of photography. The right portion of the leaf has an image of a Hungarian King St. Ladislas The central portion of the leaf has an image of the Buda side of Budapest and shows the central castle and churches lying in relief above the Danube river.
