Notes | Ernest Terah Hooley was born on February 5, 1859 in Sneinton, Nottinghamshire and died on February 11, 1947 in Long Eaton, Derbyshire. He was the only child of Terah and Elizabeth Hooley. His father for whom he worked from 1880 until 1889 was a lacemaker. In 1881 he married Annie Maria Winlaw and they had seven children. In 1888, he bought Risley Hall in Derbyshire. He was a financier buying companies and then selling them at inflated prices. Some such companies were Humber & Company Limited, the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company, Schweppes, and Bovril. He filed for bankruptcy four times: in 1898, in 1912, in 1921, and finally, in 1939. In 1911 Hooley received a twelve-month jail sentence for obtaining money on false pretenses and again in 1921 he received a three-year jail sentence for fraudulently misrepresenting floating shares of Jubilee Cotton Mills Limited from 1919-1920. He was committed to Brixton prison for a month prior to this for failing to produce statements of his financial affairs. Hooley was known for his charming warm-heartedness and generosity, not for his financial affairs.
