| Notes | James Croil was born in 1821 in Glasgow Scotland. He attended the University of Glasgow from 1838-39 and then moved to Canada to join his brother, working on the St. Lawrence river. In 1845 he purchased a farm in Upper Canada, settling on it in 1847. In that year he was also ordained as an elder of the Presbyterian Church of Canada and married Christina Richardson. Between 1860 and 1874 he did extensive fundraising for Presbyterian Church's Temporalities Fund, the Home Mission and the Sustentation Fund. He became the financial agent for the church and travelled over 12, 000 miles visiting parishes, collecting $120, 000 between 1865 and 1874. In 1867 he was appointed secretary-treasurer of the board which managed the Temporalities Fund's finances. He moved to Montreal in 1869 and sold his farm the following year. Croil became highly involved in the church, publishing the Presbyterian, the monthly organ of the church, starting in 1870. The magazine gave the account of the discussions concerning the union of the four Presbyterian churches in Canada. When the churches did merge in 1876, Croil was made editor of the combined magazine, the Presbyterian Record. He remained editor for 16 years. He lived in Montreal until his death in 1916. Croil was also a writer and amateur historian. His published works include: Dundas, a sketch of Canadian history (Montreal, 1861), Historical and statistical report of the Church of Scotland in Canada (Montreal, 1867), The life of Rev. Alexander Mathieson (Montreal, 1870), The story of the kirk in the maritime provinces (published in the Presbyterian, Montreal, 1875), The missionary problem (Toronto, 1883), Steam navigation (Toronto, 1898), and The genesis of the churches in the United States of America, in Newfoundland, and in the Dominion of Canada (Montreal, 1907).
