It became an incorporated town in 1886 and a city in 1903.It received its name from Governor DesBarres between 1784-1785, and was named after the first Viscount Sydney, Hon. Thomas Townshend. It was the seat of the government when Cape Breton was a separate colony from 1784 to 1820. It was a popular town for shipping and installed a steel plant in 1901, resulting in a boom in population.
